Dødheimsgard is one of the most unique black metal bands to come from Norway. In this interview conducted at Steelfest 2024, we talk with Vicotnik about both bands, Dødheimsgard as well as the one-of-a-kind side adventure known as Ved Buens Ende about his style choices and the ideas that run through his mind with this music. Enjoy!

Super articulate gentleman with the most interesting bands in black metal. Ved Buens Ende is apex abstract BM and DHG is dynamism personified.

This was a really cool talk, loved the Savonlinna story in particular, haha. Vicotnik is such a creative genius, madman of a stage performer, and seemingly a sweet fella. DHG really blew me away at Rites of North and Steelfest this year!

Amazing interview. After having listened to Black medium Current for the first time, I thought it was the album of maturity (concept, music and lyrics). It was my AOTY 2023 and still listening to it regularly. An essential record.

I saw Dodheimsgard live in 1999, they were pelted with cans. I was too young back then to understand their new direction, but I've seen them three times since then and have been impressed every time. A band that never gets boring and that I would/will see live again and again. Thanks for this interview!

"Written in Waters" is SUCH a unique picture of (a lot of people's, not just then band's) 1995. There's no.reason.on.earth for it to be re-created, unless it's done effortlessly like Vicotnik so eloquently put it. ______________________________________________________ This, from a guy who constantly checked Tiƶiana's newsletters back in '97 for a release date of that "Half Visible Presence" EP🙃

The name 'Dødheimsgard' is derived from three Norwegian words: 'død', which means 'death'; 'heim', which means 'home'; and 'gard', which means 'realm'. In English, it roughly translates to 'Realm of Death'. “Black Medium Current” was awesome! Release date: April 14th, 2023 Catalog ID: CDVILEF949

The first Dodheimsgard album I heard was 666 International, and it instantly clicked with me...well, instrumentally, at least, as I had to obsess over the lyrics for a week or so to decipher them, but they soon clicked too. Ferociously imaginative, honest, creative, raw, vulnerable, playful, comical and rage-filled self-analytical art. I was, beforehand, very used to the "everyday" BM bands, but 666 International really felt like an evolution of the genre into something that could be carried into the future and was not made by those who wanted to copy in order to gain fame easily by leeching off a now famous export. I understand why lots of those who were die-hard fans of the first two full-length albums were so disappointed, but because I started with 666 International, when it comes to DHG, it is surprising at the same time that the sheer advancement was shunned, and bizarre that it was the cause of fist fights. I see it as a special achievement in music as a whole, and a shining....or shimmering...example of pure passion. What Yusaf says here just continues this and that's why he has been so important in the "maturing" of the genre, along with Aldrahn, whose current band Urarv is furthering the essence of the ideology in 666 Int. and even AUO, separately. To-the-core honesty, passion and creativity.

Gotta say I love your big comment, but also at the same time I must admit 666 Int is my least fav DHG. Never liked it.

@@RautaMetal Each to their own, and cheers for the fantastic interview! I was just enthusiastic about Yusaf's comments about the album, but understand completely why you didn't ever enjoy it. I don't know if I would have loved it so much if I had started with KTK or MP. Rarely if ever has there been this sort of ideological division over a BM album, but it's good in a way as long as the differences in opinion can be discussed.

@connorm.anderton363 Yes, exactly. I went thru their discography in my Norwegian bm series if you wanna hear my thoughts. I will also do a proper retrospective video later on.

Vicotnik might as well just say that Virus/Carl Michael Eide continued Ved Buens Ende and there was no need to have him in there. Having said this Vicotnik wrote one of the greatest riffs in Virus´s debut album (he wrote the "Road " instrumental ).
