Thought comes to mind that what is really important is lather delivery from brush to skin/beard/theHair.

A very entertaining video, Matthew. You have obviously given a lot more thought to the brush-eating-lather debate than I have. I am not "scientific" when I bowl lather. I simply add a bit of soap or cream and then add water as I bowl lather until I get the consistency I like. The only time I measured anything was to see if I could make enough lather for a 3-pass shave using 1/16th tsp of soap. And I could. I'm mostly a face latherer and use synthetic brushes for that. Full disclosure. I have 1 badger brush, 2 boar brushes, and 8 synthetic brushes. I only use the badger and boar brushes for bowl lathering. I will say that I tend to use a bit more soap when I use my boar brushes. They always tend to "eat" the soap. The badger brush reacts more like my synthetics. Anyway, you did a great job comparing the badger and synthetic brushes. Wet shaving is all about enjoyment and that's when YMMV comes into play. Have a great rest of the week. Now go light those candles!

Hi Matthew. Good stuff. Nice experiment. My own personal personal experience is that I make better / quicker lather with a smaller let's say 22 - 24 mm badger than a larger 26 mm badger. But that may be just me. Very nice experiment. Keep crackin out great content

Good enjoyable test for brush lather eaters, I just have a simpler method of testing by just squeezing at the end of the shave how much visual lather I see on my hand and 26mm 2band badger has a lot where a 26mm synthetic has less so synthetic brushes hold less residual lather has been my conclusion. Which brush do I prefer, depends on the how much time I have or the kind of face feel I prefer that day. After doing approximately 2,000 shaves using different brushes, synthetic brushes trap less residual lather is my conclusion but not a whole lot of difference! Good test Matthew to visually see how you came about your results, I still use my badgers, boar and synthetic brushes through out the year because I do wash my hands with left over lather for the last 2 years so not to waste good soap products. When travelling I like to take a synthetic brush along because they dry quicker IMO.

Nice one Matthew! I’ve had some low end cheap badgers eat the lather, I could load super heavily and after a few minutes the lather would disappear. Yes. Natural hair bristled brush (or at least badger) "eat" lather. One avoids this doing these: (1) Presoak the brush for more than half hour. (2) Use more soap and corresponding water. More accurately SOME badger brushes "eat" lather and some seem not to.
@lawrence1md

Natural Hair brushes - but you use a much larger amount of soap for this testing. I use typically, but visually estimated, one-eighth teaspoon of soap. Your quarter teaspoon of soap overcomes any tendency of a brush holding on to the lather.
@lawrence1md
@lawrence1md 2 месяца назад
@@10floz30minutes I have seen many other users and content creators using 1/2 tsp or more. 1/4 tsp of soap is fairly conservative.

@@lawrence1md Upon some of my commenting on videos in another channel, one of the commenters, when read my report of "one-eighth teaspoon", responded that he can still get a good lather with one-sixteenth teaspoon. I only recently tried one-sixteenth teaspoon with good success of a lather. Not yet know how far down further this can go. I have been checking soaps' usage rates now for over two years.

Hahah-very good Matthew! I think at the end your conclusion is probably right on. Depending on the natural fiber, under the microscope the surface is rough and pocked, with some having a hollow center section. This allows the natural fiber to hold more water and like you said, if you didn't soak it long enough, it will pull moisture from the lather. As long as you treat them accordingly, they work almost similar, though the bloom shape that happens in natural fibers allows the brush to hold more lather. I will say I've been kind of blown away with the Pure Bliss synthetic knot that I picked up and I often have to remind myself that it is a synthetic. To me it acts and feels very close to a real badger and as I've been using it more and more, it's blooming like a real badger too. Take care!
