Keto works for me simply because I'm not starving hungry all day like I was for 20 plus years on a low-fat diet. My wife on the other hand hated low-carb and has the self-control to stay on a low-fat diet. We both eat salads and low-carb vegetables as part of our overall plan. However my salads and omelettes look a lot different than hers.

Good thing that there's no real need for diets to be low-fat or low-carb, just highly satiating and not overly caloric has been the way to go for me (there are highly satiating carbs AND fats).

Somebody once said people will eat until the body gets all the nutrients it needs. Poor food choices equal higher calories but low nutrition. People on these diets get better foods/nutrition on lower calories and thus lose weight.

I agree because I experience this energy from burning my own fat off my skinny ass. I don't even think about food for a long time because I am not hungry. I get worried sometimes because I don't want to eat or snack. Since I am what is referred to as fat adapted or metabolically flexible, I can binge sometimes on tortilla chips and salsa but I did the so called reset and can bounce back and forth but I prefer to stay fat adapted because it is easy. I don't bonk anymore, or get hangry. At 56 at feel better than I have for years. I am also a lean person who bike commutes but now I don't worry about exercise making me raving hungry. I'm am always fine. Also nice to not spend extra time on the john. Life definitely improved in every way imagined. Food is medicine.

Is energy expenditure really that important? Eating nutrient dense food that stops cravings and snacking is the most important and eat less often will control insulin and weight more than just reducing calories. The ability to switch into ketosis is more important than being in ketosis.
@littlevoice_11

Energy expenditures is a single piece in a complex puzzle. Keto (when done right I.e. quality protein, wholefood fats focusing on omega 3, olives, nuts, seeds, avocado, cacao, lots of non starchy vegetables, herbs, spices, mushrooms and fermented foods) has benefits on health including sleep, hormones, energy, mood, inflammation, body composition, cognitive function, insulin sensitivity and more... this has profound benefits on quality of life. It also, by multiple channels, would increase energy expenditure through physiological, biological and habitual changes across the day. As they say "When you feel better, you can live more"...
@kenhalal375
@kenhalal375 2 года назад
I was thinking along these same lines as I watched the video. Also, there is the question on increased mitochondrial density because your body isn't inflamed from the overdoses of insulin and thus has an opportunity to be as efficient as possible.

From the beginning, Gary Taubes had it right: the discussion of CICO is besides the point, we eat a low carb diet because it’s easier to eat less. Period. The discussion of CICO is akin to telling a person “getting rich is about how much money comes into to your account vs what goes out.” Which is COMPLETELY true… but useless info. We have to leave this behind.

I really wish Peter would dummy down some of his scientific speak. I think he assumes we all are on the same page. I can interpret most of what he says it’s most important to assume your listener is the average person not integrated into the field of science. Sometimes just a reminder of a term’s meaning and/or explanation of all of his acronyms would be super helpful. I spend most of my time researching terms to make sure I fully understand what the term’s meaning is within the context of the conversation.

Not sure I understand the conclusion here. It seems to me that ketosis was trending towards more energy expenditure, even when matched for calories. You do a higher protein modified ketogenic diet and then you're really cooking.

They were saying it was so small it was barely measurable, and that the CIM predicted a much higher expenditure increase. Attia was the keto fanboy but even he’s had to admit it doesn’t work the way he thought it did.

@sc4332
@sc4332 2 года назад
Of course the keto diet doesn’t increase energy expenditure. But it makes it a lot easier to be in a calorie deficit as the body can easily burn stored body fat for fuel.
@888jucu
@888jucu 2 года назад
That only makes sense if you are wanting to lose weight but at a point you will just want to maintain in which case you will need to eat more to balance the energy needs. The major concern I hav with long term keto is that it is pretty clear in most medical literature that fats, be they saturated or otherwise (including vegetable fats), can inhibit the insulin site in your cells and start to present insulin resistance and you dont need to be obese for this to happen. I think the long term effects of being keto and eating high fat is going to have adverse longtime effects on CVD and insulin resistance and for some this may only manifest itself much later

@NotMyRealName1

That just doesn’t make sense though, as you’re eating so much more fat in a keto diet. Not saying they don’t work for some people, but the only reason they work is fewer calories.

Yeah CICO is pretty useless outside a lab or classroom. What matters is satiety. Very little exists in low fat diet. I was hungry all the time and didn’t lose any weight. Lost 35 lbs so far on Keto and almost never feel hungry.

Layne is the master of spin. Fat leaves the body primarily as CO2. So the fact that he is talking past the discrepancy in chamber data between ketogenic and non-ketogenic diets is troubling. Keep in mind that their formulas posit energy equilibrium. Also if you want an undisputed metabolic advantage, acetone (a particle containing energy) is wasted in breath exhalation while in Ketosis.

I think this is very good point as high fat diets (regardless fat sources) have been shown to creat insulin resistance. Its also well documented about the long tern CVD issues associated with long term high fats diets and this damage can happen even to non-obese people

If you do a higher protein version of the keto diet then your energy expenditure will increase because of the energy required to digest the protein.

Calories in calories out is still and will always be the bottom line. I’ve maintained for decades that way. Didn’t do it well in menopause and gained about 10#, now will have to shave it off but even the 10# I’ve maintained within a pound up and down for four years which is not usual to keep weight that maintained. I didn’t expect the differences with menopause and should have adjusted when I noticed I was eating outside my maintenance amount
@Scruffed
@Scruffed Год назад
Calories in calories out is the name of the game, but it doesn't teach you how to play it very well. Some calories are much more satiating than others, and some taste better than others, both of which are hugely important for diet adherence.
@lisatowe778
@lisatowe778 Год назад
@@Scruffed I was raised on what they now call “organic” and “vegan” back then it was simple farming and vegetarian. If you’re eating healthy foods with no obvious inflammation to the body, diversifying the micro biome like you would a portfolio, then it’s a matter of what makes it possible for you to maintain a level of calories versus activity. I know my problem, I was suddenly attracted to foods I never ate AND had a massive mold exposure I’m still working on. As I decrease the mold the diet naturally returns to normal. Parasites and mold etc can trick your body into wanting foods the parasites and mold live on beat like artificial sweeteners and H Pylori lol

150 calories x 365 days = 54,750 extra calories burned (assuming that somehow this is a constant) This is 15.6 pounds a year eating at "maintenance" At least in my case hypothetically this math sort of adds up. The beginning of Keto for me 200 lb then 190 after glycogen depletion. Never did keto for weight loss always under doctor and PT recommendation. General exercise working out and not counting calories, occasional cheats where scale temp balloons from water, after one year my keto weight 179. 11 pounds. Definitely some muscle loss. Immediately went on my honeymoon, total non-healthy stuffing our face everyday with cruise ship buffet cookies breakfast eating everything at Disney world just non-stop gluttony for three weeks and went to 206 in 3 weeks. Today about two and a half years later I am my goal weight of 175 and I can finally chase hypertrophy. Hopefully with some carbs.
