As a researcher in a different field, I really appreciate this series and how you're breaking down the components of each study to explain the data collected and potential limitations while keeping it reasonably understandable for a non-science audience!

If you have an unstable PH, then yes. Corals are stressed when ph is not at 8.2 or above. When PH drops at night, corals are so stressed that they are prone to anything. The biggest thing we see is that STN and RTN out of no we're. If your PH is stable at 8.2 at night and high or the same during the day, corals are happy and not stressed and become very healthy and can fight off pest we didn't think was possible. Ph is key for sps.

and how you keep them at 8.2 minimum?

@petarst My ph is always 8.5 day and 8.3 night. Use kalk as my top off. Dose only at night my total evaporation in a day

It sounds like it's just a thing of ciliate amount. So they saw them but couldn't detect them, I guess that was only a few then. Where they could detect them there may have been a lot more or them. Ciliates eat bacteria, I don't think they harm the corals directly. But maybe if there are too many of them, they decimate the beneficial bacteria in the cora's microbiome to a point where the coral suffers. Ok, this "novel" method sounds stupid. I like how she bears down on their methods xD . She ist right though. There are a lo of studies that make you shake your head, when you read how they obtained their results.

Surely something can only be considered pathogenic if it is directly causative of disease and not just correlated with it? Those ciliates might not have caused the disease, but might be scavenging on an already diseased coral. To prove that the ciliates are pathogenic, they would need to isolate the live ciliates and introduce them to healthy, live coral tissue and observe whether disease or immune responses occurred.

Another study talked about the problems with this. Currently, they use aiptasia in lab settings to test such thing. Unfortunately, aiptasia is not a good analog for a lot of corals. The other paper suggested using goniastrea for these purposes moving forward. Personally, I think k this is an area where hobbyists and scientists could work together quite well.

Running up to the glass and scaring your fish and keeping them in a stressed environment can result in ich. Scaring the fish does not Create the ich it only allows it a platform to thrive. Just because two things exist in the same place does not necessarily mean that they are symbiotic, nor are they the result of each other. Right?

O...I love this from 2 great people. I also love this from a wisdom standpoint. I'll tell you why...if I have enough space which I don't because Instagram will cut my text short...O...crap I already wasted 47 letters 😂 ok I will continue.... One of the greatest of all deceptions in life period...is that he's a scientist 🥼, doctor, politician, etc etc and look at all the big words aka nipheriafimbriosisbacterialactus and such. Looky here ..he/she/it has a degree in myocarditis so they definitely know what they are talking about! Continued....

I like the process you two have, what you're doing and the premise of this study. The premise is much like Rats, carrying fleas, that are the vector for human viral infection. But yes, the study is flawed. Which happens all the time in scientific research. So the follow on is then... How many other studies corroborate or refute there findings? If there aren't any, then this study in isolation is mostly useless. As with most research that's a one-off. Without refinement of findings that are replicable, the data cannot inheriently be trusted. That doesn't make it worthless, just useless. When we [the hobby] talk about coral pathogens, or even marine bacteria, you are in a poorly researched field by default. Most of our knowledge about pathogens comes from human, plant and animal scientific studies like human medicine, veterinary medicine, botany, agronomy, and entomology. And those fields still know very little about terrestrial bacteria. This particular study really is in a weakly understood area of information. But, hats off to the researchers and Brandi for taking a stab at it. I do appreciate Brandi's instincts though. She does a great job at breaking down what is often a complex process or a field specific vocabulary, and explaining it general terms. There is a benefit to you two putting on this series, and I hope you keep going with it.

Love this series😊👍 It would be cool if you looked into the theory about ich dying out after 30-something cycles (about a year) in tanks with no new additions. Is it really true?

Recirculating algae exudates in a glass box must increase bacteria both pathogens and not.
@bthefountain
@bthefountain 11 месяцев назад
I’m not sure. But definitely something to think about.
@bthefountain
@bthefountain 11 месяцев назад
Though. The paper was very clear that if there were problems from algae, it wasn’t waterborne cause corals don’t start dieing unless algae is touching the corals.
