I'm also hispanic and you can hear her accent 100%. To some non spanish speakers it might not be that apparent, but to spanish speakers it is. Keep in mind this trailer is a couple of minutes long and heavily edited with her talking in whispers to minimize the accent. She wont talk like that the whole movie... trust me, when the movie comes out you ll 100% hear her accent.

I appreciated this analysis. Her accent in the trailer bothered me but I couldn’t put my finger on what was bothering me exactly aside from the slight hint of Spanish in her pronunciation. I think Marilyn’s voice was a large part of what made her iconic, so not getting the accent right isn’t as small an issue as some are suggesting. Accents, especially during the Old Hollywood/Golden Era were very specific and pronounced. I’m still looking forward to watching Ana de Armas’s portrayal but I’m not convinced based on this trailer that she will be viewed as the definitive version of Marilyn that many of us have been hoping for.

That woman with her accent and English has interpreted an icon of history. Something that many people cannot achieve!!! Instead of criticizing Ana, they should dedicate themselves to learning another language and see how difficult it is .With that" Latin English"...she is famous and rich!

This was bad casting. I mean, if people get up in arms about black little mermaid (which is a work of fiction) this casting choice was a choice. They know how she sounds, Ana has done many movies. She's young, she's no Meryl Streep with the accents yet. I'm sure she did lovely portraying the spirit and vulnerability of Marilyn but if accents get in the way of audience accepting they are watching Marilyn herself then might as well add zombies to this movie and make it fictional. A biopic is about embodying the person and for someone as recognizable and iconic as Marilyn, everyone knows how she sounds. Everyone who has internet can look up how she sounds. You can't fake it. You're telling me from the thousands of starlets in Hollywood, the ONLY one they deemed acceptable was a girl with a distinctly thick accent?

As a native Spanish speaker and a philologist, I can confirm she pronounced "exist" with the Spanish "x". Just FYI, we don't pronounce it as "s" as you said, it's more like a [ks], we'd say something like "eksist". To us, your pronunciation sounds like "egsizt".

I love your analysis. I picked up on her accent too, but it's interesting that it only comes out in certain words [as you clearly point out], other words she pronounces like an American. That is to say that those folks that completely trash her are being totally unfair. Keep in mind that Ana had been in this country for barely 6 years when the movie was filmed. That is to say, she didn't speak a word of English before that. Its an amazing feat that in 6 years her level of proficiency and pronunciation can be as good as it is in the film.

She’s a great actress, but let’s be real. She was cast to play a WELL KNOWN, historical figure. It’s not the same as having a black mermaid lol.

Its just bad and I feel bad for Ana because she put a great effort into this movie - its a shame she couldn't sound American so people could focus on the performance instead of feeling distracted constantly like she was about to say something in Spanish or come out of character because the accent doesn't gel her to the character. Its completely dissonant and uncomfortable to watch for American English speakers. If you already have an accent it won't bother you bc it doesn't bother the ear and the person can't identify it. We have to cut Ana a break for trying this hard and going for it. It would be daunting for any actor to play Marilyn and not get criticism.

Honestly she is great i didn’t know who she was until everybody started saying they want her to play evelyn hugo in the seven husbands of evelyn hugo but evelyn is latin too although she had no accent because she got rid of it. i think she did amazing and I didn’t notice the accent until others pointed out. sofia vergara has an accent too but I really want her to play older evelyn

I think she's fine. Seems like the best Marilyn portrayal to date. She's done an amazing job from what I've seen and I can't wait to see the movie.

I just watched a video of Marilyn Monroe pronouncing her name in a similar way. Ana De Armas said in an interview that Marilyn always had the same voice but her accent would sometimes changed drastically. So for a person that learned English in 6 months I think she did a phenomenal job considering the situation.

In general, Judging people's accent can be subjective sometimes, influenced by our perception and stereotypes. Listening to the accent of someone without knowing the person, their nationality and background, one might reach a different conclusion.

She has a slight accent, but by no means a spanish accent. Spanish accent is 10 fold harsher.

I don’t care about a slight accent! To find an actress that can play Marilyn to this level would’ve been hard. Andrew the director said they waited 14 years to film this until the found Ana. The thing is she has everything in terms of looks, acting, emotions, mannerisms, sexuality, and just everything so the slight accent wasn’t as important. Plus it’s a fictionalized, reimagined version. I think when everyone finally sees it they will be impressed and see why she was casted! I’m a huge fan of hers and I know she will deliver! It's VERY obvious. I knew nothing about the actress and was impressed by the resemblance. I had no idea what kind of accent it was at first, but immediately knew she was foreign. At first, I assumed she was European ... perhaps Spanish or Portuguese. Her "S" sounds were over-pronounced, and some of her vowels were rounded out, as if singing them. In opera training, we are taught to open the mouth and accentuate the short "o" sound. When spoken, it sounds foreign. Her accent is very sexy but it doesn't pass the sniff test for an American icon anymore than Elvis singing with a Japanese accent or George Washington crossing the Delaware barking orders with a German accent. I certainly would think twice if I were an American actress sent abroad to play an icon of a foreign country whose language is not English. I'll give her one thing. She has balls.

I was very impressed with how well her English accent was in this film. I would say she got it 90% which is really good for actors who’s first language isn’t English. I don’t see a lot of actors with thick accents get to that level. Her vocal training paid off

To those too disturbed by the accent issue, you are clearly not true fans of Marilyn Monroe. ADA absolutely nailed all of her mannerisms, facial ticks, mouth movements, vocal pauses, body language, eye flickering, etc.etc.etc. Go back and watch MM - like a lot of MM - and then maybe you will appreciate the genius of ADA in this role. Of course you can hear the accent especially when youʻre listening for it, as every keyboard-critic out there has banded to do so. But there has not been a better portrayal of this historic figure to date. And you might also keep in mind: the best person that ever played Marilyn Monroe ...was Norma Jean.

I came to look for a video like this when I heard that the actress playing Marilyn Monroe is not a native English Speaker. At first I thought maybe she had moved to an English speaking country when she was very young, because when kids learn a language while they are still young they can learn the native accent of the country where they moved and they can even learn to do other accents. To me they count as native speakers even if it's not their first language. I thought there was no way they would have casted someone who couldn't do an American Accent. But they did and I'm surprised. It makes me think she definitely must have great acting skills and that's why she was casted. I'm not a native English speaker either. I learned when I was 17-19 and at some point I really thought I could just practice a lot and get the American accent right, but I never did. I understood that it's just not gonna happen, native English speakers will always be able to tell my accent isn't native no matter how well I speak and pronounce words. It's something that really frustrated me at first but now I've made peace with. So I got exited thought maybe this actress had been able to do it. But now I see she didn't. I wonder if there are people who actually master a native English accent (whether it is American, Canadian, etc.). I also learned a lot from this video because I definitely pronounce exist the way she does it. And all the words he said she pronounces with a Spanish accent, I couldn't tell what the problem was until he said it 😟. I've known English for like 20 years now and I still can't recognize some pronunciation mistakes. I've never lived in an English speaking country so I guess that's part of the problem.

She obviously tried really hard and worked with a coach, but it's one of those things where she's coming so close but a native English speaker's ear can just hear that something is off. I haven't watched the movie, but not becauss of the accent. I can look past that sort of thing if it's good, though I understand that that alone will completely turn some people away. There are lots of movies where British people do American accents and I can tell most of the time no matter how hard they try. I am from Poland and I can't hear what you hear, for is just masterpiece that she sounds so good after very short learning of this language. She gave me hope and you took it away 😢:(. When I started learning I was 7 and some people might think that I had chance master my accent but no, not in polish schools it was 20 years ago and no native speakers. I would like to reduce my accent.

Dominik’s decision to cast a Cuban actor as an American icon wasn't “groundbreaking,” it was horrible. Casting actually does matter and no someone doesn't have to do an exact impersonation to play a person but this is so distracting I can't enjoy the movie at all.

English is a lingua franca, that is, a language that people with different mother tongues use to communicate. Most English speakers in the world do not have a native accent. Native English speakers are the absolute minority and need to be reminded, and constantly I must add, that most people watching this film will not be bothered or concerned with Ana's accent. Not in the least. To say that "you would be very proud of Ana if she were your student" is terribly patronising and annoying. Ana doesn't need your approval or your tutoring. Her Marylin was well prepared and exquisite without her having to neutralise her vowels or changing the way she pronounces "exist" to match what native North American English speakers do... It's about time Native English speakers get used to non-native renderings of the language and become less entitled... It's tragic that great actors are not considered for roles because of "their accent". We have endured for years Tom Cruise's, Brad Pitt's, Russel Crowe's, Shia Le Beouf's, Anne Hathaway's lazy attempts to talk with an Irish or British accent... I think we should be able to cope with Ana de Armas not sounding as "authentic" as you wish. My humble opinion.

Just some clarification: In Spanish we do have the sound /z/ as in English “exist” We are also able to pronounce the /st/ without a vowel just before. Here some examples: /z/ in the word “desde” IPA(key): [ˈd̪ez.ð̞e], ), “desgranar” [d̪ez.ɣ̞ɾaˈnaɾ] For the ST pronunciation: instituto, constitución. Maybe it was not that important for the film, same as in the case of Arnold Schwarzenegger. For the word Marylin, I pronounce the “a” like an æ, but maybe in other accents it will be like ˈmɑɹ.i.ə… or ˈmɛərɪ..

I really hope they record the lines again, I was so curious about this movie just to hear how she mastered Marilyn’s accent and voice and I dont want to be dissapointed 🫣 I’m really a Huge fan of Ana please Netflix fix it while it can be done
