When I got hired as a machinist at 21- I smashed all the cycle times on all the parts in production by minutes. Shortly after an old timer who had been there for 43 years told me something I’ll never forget. “You work fast today because you are young and you feel good.. but someday you won’t be young anymore, and there will be days you don’t feel good. But they will still expect you to be just as fast as you are today, if not faster, because you already showed them that you can do it. Now you will never be able to work slower without someone asking why.”
in daoism, there is a concept called "wu-wei" translated as non-action or effortless action, it's the practice of not overworking yourself while honing your skills.
@@airhead1218 I have only a mild familiarity with Daoism, but this is not that. What you're saying is basically a re-iteration of the 80-20 principle. This is more like intentionally keeping expectations low because the harder you work, the harder your boss exploits you.
When I start a new job I tell them I'm worth 50 an hour. I'll prove it to them the first two weeks. If they don't give me that I'm gone, I always prove it but they don't want to pay me. Now I just work for myself. It's OK to work good and fast just tell them you want to be paid.
Funny enough people care more if you worked hard to achieve greatness in sports, hobbys, video games etc than how ever hard you work in supposed important big boy real jobs. Really shows just how little people intrinsically value work.
Keeping society running for everyone should be an achievement, no? It should be inherently satisfying knowing that our work contributes to helping all the people around us. But it doesnt most jobs are total bs they add nothing of real value to anyone. And you never see any results from it. Most jobs most people work are dead end nothing burger positions. That only exist to keep things on the books They are inherently unsatisfying add nothing and could disappear tomorrow and nothing of value other than the money that person was making would be lost. @chillstoneblakeblast3172
I think part of it has to do with moral relativism, and assigning value to things according to how "by choice" they are instead of value in the things themselves. We have also created many jobs which are totally pointless, devoid of meaning, undeserving of hard work, and genuinely not worth celebrating
@@Alex-vm6ef Half of corporate jobs just exist for the purpose of management, which while I understand the importance of that, its also dehumanizing.
Something that's been a lifelong concept for me to come to terms with is that being likeable will always go farther than hard work. You can interpret that as a good thing or a bad thing.
I’ve honestly been slacking so hard at my low wage job (working on personal projects on my laptop while on the clock) and I think the only reason they haven’t fired me is because I have charisma
For example, people don't care if a project took months and dozens of nights without sleeping to finish, they care about the result. If it's not good enough, to the trash it goes.
Im an electrician, which arguable has virtue but i never hear any praise, but thats okay. I dont work hard for the validation or even appreciation of others. Knowing that i can succeed and bring power to people who will never give second thought brings me satisfaction. Sure, celebrities get more praise than they probably deserve, but people love escapism. They love peering into the lives of those who are on top and seeing a world they think they wish they were apart of. Celebrities give people that escape. Its not an american phenomenon either. Most great inventors were nobodies while they were alive throughout history. I think simplifiying it to americans being obsessed with wealth is an easier explanation to swallow. Truth is people are so unhappy with their lives they believe true happiness can be achieved and they believe celebrities have it when they really dont. If you are going into a field or profession or skill with the intent of receiving grandiose recognition and the worlds riches you will be disappointed everytime. Work for yourself and your loved ones. Take care of yourself and those that matter to you. And if you have dreams of grandeur you must he willing to endure the hellish pain it takes
I think about it sometimes, how hard it is to maintain and build all of those kind of things, and I for one think you are awesome and a total unsung hero of society.
I've done that. I stopped because the visa BS was a pain in the neck. Also, I got tired of teaching ESL. It beats the hell out of working a normal job in America though, that's for sure.
Ever since age 11 I wanted to live in Japan, I eventually grew up and see Japan does have it's issues....... but still rather live there than America, like my life expectancy will 10 years higher as Lemon explained
Your end of the year bonus will not increase if you worked harder. Your hourly rate will not increase if you worked harder. Nothing is gained, except for 'atta boys. 'Atta boys hold no monetary value and honestly the exchange rate between 'atta boys and good-boy-points is crap
I don't know where you work, but my year end bonus is directly correlates to my work output over the course of the year. Although, that may be a unique situation for me.
I was clearing up a loading dock and I did it really fast. I was about to clean up the last bit and my boss told me “go get that one.” All that hard work and the only thing that was noticed was the last bit I was getting

@@Cross_Malaki Yes, but the point is that Emp was kind of reductive when he asked why we don't treat illegal immigrant workers super well if we truly value hard work. It takes away from his point when it's pretty easy for many of us to answer that question.
@@Cross_Malaki illegal immigrants (aka enemy invaders) are why no one can afford a house or have better wages. It's simple economics and people need to be forced at gun point to learn it if they ever should be allowed to vote.
Nigerian-American here and I'll tell you right now. I say it all the time. I'm living with my parents rn and my only plan for my current job is to work 1-2 years just stacking my money up with plans to invest. My boomer immigrant grandfather is always spewing that "just work hard" stuff that made sense when new grads with a high-school education could just work at Kodak, and buy a home off a single income.
Hate to be the “as a member of the” guy but as a kid born into an immigrant family working these types of jobs ur right and sadly this mentality is what keeps a lot of them working these types of jobs…my father couldve easily learnt English but he didn’t because he thought brow sweat would be the better option in the long run bc he ate the whole American dream up…
Same here, my dad came around the late 90s and never bothered learning english cause he was doing so well then. 30 years later he is still making the same as he did before, but he needs two jobs and has no rest days because the cost of livings did rise even though his wage didn't. I started an office job and some days I'm just looking at the clock because I don't have much to do. It's such an odd system we have where the jobs that require the least amount of work are oftentimes the ones that pay the most.
While I don't agree with everything Lemon says in this video, and I think he can be a bit reductive sometimes, his point about people imagining themselves quitting their jobs after getting a ton of money helped me realize why art might be so stale nowadays. The internet is totally flooded with mediocre low effort slop, and I'm not just talking about kids content farm channels. A lot of channels having to do with animation do the absolute bare minimum and cut corners (using a lot of still or barely moving frames/repeating frames/just resorting to rigs). A lot of art is so mediocre nowadays because people don't ACTUALLY like doing it in a lot of cases, they just like the idea of making money by drawing stuff. At least that's how I see it. It explains why a lot of kids want to be, "influencers". They just see it as "post video get money". They don't actually value work. They don't want to do something to improve society. They just want to work as little as possible for the most amount of money.
I remember wanting to make money off of RU-vid when I first started my channel when I was only 13, as I got older I realized how hard it is nowadays bc of the algorithm constantly changing, you could get demonetized for literally anything, and you get payed peanuts per thousand views. Now that I'm older there's no way in hell I'm making RU-vid my full time job, yea I'll have it be monotized but I'm just gonna stick to making videos I and my fans like, if my videos are able to make a few bucks or pennies, cool
Everyone always blames money for why we can't have good things but in truth the problem lies within. We can't have great things anymore because everyone collectively checked out in 2011. Who gives a flying fuck about chilling with friends? I have social media! Who gives a fuck about drawing every frame? I can just speed it all up as fast as possible and go back to social media! People these days always say they're busy but in truth they're wasting more of their time now than they ever have. We're living in a era of nihilism, where no one wants anything better and no one cares anymore. Everything sucks so why bother? Ironically, they themselves are contributing to the problem. Change is always possible but it never happens when you don't bother to make a difference. Is it hard? Yeah. But the issue is no one wants to try. Every era has had its issues but the difference now is no one cares.
The actual state of internet art AND ESPECIALLY the consequences it has brought upon the world are far worse than you imagine and will show their ugly faces after a long while from here. They have tapped into historical forces that should not have been awakened. They have defiled certain things that should have remained "sacred" that is not tampered with. All in the name of the golden calf. Word to the wise!
This has always existed. A large amount of people see art as only a means to an end. How many musicians can you name that have one decent breakout album, while the rest of their discography is complete garbage? People need to work hard to break into the mainstream, but as soon as they secure their position, their motivation to try is completely gone.
Hard work is its own reward, meaning the hard work is just for you to comprehend. Nobody else really cares, but let's not forget "Hard work will set you free" was also the slogan on the infamous concentration camp. Meaning it's just a tool of social control to keep the prisoners fighting among each other rather than the exploiters and slave masters. In a just society the manual laborers would get paid the most, like the migrant workers picking fruit, while the marketing team would get the least. However, we don't live in a just world, so the people that have nothing to do with the product or service and it's trip to the consumer are paid the most while touting how great they are because of all the money they make. OK, maybe not right on the dot, but close enough since the people who make the most are the people who "invested" and literally do nothing but wait to collect their share.
For me, the baffling thing about American work culture is this idea of retirement being treated like a reward. Your reward for hard work is... not working?
Thumbs up to this golden nugget of a video. This is it right here. When I tell plans of how I’m going to escape the rat race to family members I’m told ‘that’s not realistic’. It’s met with negativity. However, if I tell them I’m ‘working more shifts’ they believe that is the answer. I believe this is ‘middle class thinking’.
I had a job that I loved as a coding teacher at an after school program. But the owner decided to break franchise contract and sink the ship for all of us. For 4 years I loved my job, and now I'm in the same boat as everyone else.
I also taught programming for a couple years before the owner did a stupid and had to close business. it was the most fulfilling period in my life where I was excited about Monday mornings I managed to find a regular dev job I enjoy almost as much, but it took several job hops to achieve. Good luck finding your next fulfilment
I work at subway with other coworkers who hate their job due to poor management, here in Australia. It’s essentially the same here in terms of misery for workers and only motivated by pay.
I work hard exclusively for my own benefit and enjoyment. I'm totally aware that all the efforts I put in my work would be just as expensive to my employer than a regular or below average guy doing the work. I like things to be done correctly and to my standards. I don't expect thanks. I take personal enjoyment in doing things well.
I totally agree, however this only ever works if you don’t have to work with coworkers. If you work with others, what happens is you do the work of two people while only being paid for one, and the coworker that expects you to do work for them, or deliberately do work incorrectly, collect a free check.
i can say that personally, my happiness has increased dramatically since i accepted that working is nothing more than a transaction i must engage in for the sake of money. and work depreciates my body and my life, so it's best to give as little effort as possible, during the shortest amount of time, for the maximum amount of money. thankfully my work understands that. don't buy me a "pizza party" on friday, just take that money make it a bonus on my paycheck. doesn't matter if the bonus is only 33 cents. I'll take the 33 cent bonus over the pizza party or CuLtUrE or whatever nonsense you're trying to push on me. I don't want a t shirt, a work party, none of that. I want to see you all as little as possible and be compensated at the highest rate possible. That's it. End of story. Oh and by the way, if you aren't spending every waking minute trying to start your own business or your own source of recurring income with little/no work, you're a sucker. America is a shithole for "lifers." Don't be a lifer. Get out of the system, with every ounce of time and resource you have.
We're supposed to live our lives working jobs we hate until we're old and infirm. All so we can retire with money we're too old to properly enjoy by doing the things we loved to do in our youth.
I work on the side of freeways in the US as a diesel technician, changing tires, abs lines, etc. all on the side of the road whether or not it's 120 or -20 degrees F the only appreciation ive gotten was from my family. My friends don't respect me and my peers at work think I'm stupid, but the difference between me and them is that I enjoy working my ass off, giving myself a fulfilling end to my day. I have no friends no girlfriend and I couldn't be happier. I don't need to be accepted or pleased by anyone.

It does feel GREAT to be truly free like that, but no man can be an island forever. Check in with somebody now and then and don't get completely lost in your own sauce.
And when your bones are weak and your joints stiff and you can't work like that anymore you'll be left hollow if you've got nothing else. Workaholics tend not to last long after reality forces them to slow down enough they don't feel useful anymore.
For better or worse, the only way that such a future will arrive is if Americans unanimously decide to stop purchasing many modern products/services, e.g. fast food, streaming subscriptions, centralized delivery services like Amazon, etc. All of these things are contributing to a culture of convenience that consumers are paying the ultimate price for, which is their sanity.
thing that annoys me when i no one recognises that i worked hard. it feels like im always expected to work super hard, and keep up with the demand, and when i cant, i just feel like a failure
I dont want to retire and I think the idea of working towards retirement can be very toxic. This is because I'd rather work less and build a decent life now rather than investing in a future that I may not even live to. I don't want to have to work 2 jobs for my entire young adulthood, putting away all my extra money and living like I'm in poverty, just so I can *maybe* retire if I live to 70. It feels like having a carrot on a string dangled in front of me. Even if I do live, why would I waste my years now just so I can live without working when I am too old and frail to enjoy it?
Aside from the paycheck, the only thing I can add is that I don't have to feel the shame of being on welfare, mooching off of family/friends, or relying on handouts. I want to emphasize that it doesn't bring me any pride that I do work, but rather it just prevents me from ever having to drop to my knees and beg.

I always thought of the American dream (not being from North America) as having that little bit more control over ones life; having an income that's reasonably higher than expenditure. That net income should provide a more comfortable life, but one should never fritter it away.
the reason why Southern Immigrants are dunked on is because they take money from the US circulation and send it to their families to the South, allows companies to decrease they're wages bc they don't demand wages fit for their living, but for their family down south, in which the US dollar is worth more. And because they are comfortable with lower wages, they end up taking jobs away from American citizens (even then, a lot of other jobs are outsourced to Asia for the same reasons as it being cheaper.) And their work is not close to being on par with the American citizen, hard work means nothing if the product is inferior, and with the increase in southern immigration there's been a significant dip in housing quality despite the rising cost of homes.
i imagine theres a good amount of illegal immigrants that pay for US goods because they have to pay to live here how do they not give back to the economy if they're giving their labor and paying for food and housing unless they go through borders everyday
Actually its that no workers anywhere have bargaining power or the ability to actually demand higher wages, when has that ever worked out for someone regardless of migrant status
No. I'm realizing this more and more as I've transferred positions a couple of times in my company. Like even though I did really well in my previous positions, in my new one I feel a bit of imposter syndrome. For no real reason either. Just always feel like I have to be busy or prove myself. Ironically, all of the older people who managed me previously are fucking retired. What am even caring about now? 🎉
9:00 - 9:10 rings so true to me, it's eery. It's literally what my parents say whenever I tell them I feel overwhelmed and exhausted by my job. It gets old fast.
One of the other things that has been happening and this also relates to his last video I saw is that when some lower grunt employee makes mistake they can either be sued into oblivion or they could just be fired CEO or the higher ups make $1 million mistake or $1 billion mistake. They get golden parachutes on the way down from their mistakes or they suffer no consequences at worse force to retire People are seeing this and life is unfair but there’s a certain level of common sense. Why would you want these people ran the corporation to the ground working at your next company you could just got your job at and people are looking at this like yeah this isn’t worth it. We need to find a way out of the system. Keep running. We will have no jobs and we will always pay the price, so why bother this was long one but thank you thank you thank you for your videos

They were shown in news, papers and over TV. You were paid very well if you were a factory worker that did it hard. If you have seen HBO's Chernobyl series, and remember the Coal Minister there, he IRL actually was working in the mines since the age of 12 as a simple miner. After the Soviets came he became first a director of the mine, and then a minister of the entire industry simply because during his lifetime he has gathered knowledge about every in and out of the process and the entire system. Contrary to what was portrayed in that piece of propaganda, he was immensely respected. Unlike the general secretaries, for example. Even Gagarin the be the first Cosmonaut himself was chosen simply because he was himself a lathe worker and a son of a mere milkmaid
Everyone wants to not work but what some of the younger people today do not understand is that at some poiont in order to have SOMETHING resembling society SOME type of work is going to need to be done. The real issue is the fetishization of work under capitalism. People are expected to work 5x as hard for 5 times as long in order to support the avarice of a small hand full of elites at the top of the global economy and, or, local municipalities, or, just the owner in general. We work so that he doesn't have to! The true goal is the abolition of this relationship.
Also, if I had the Gates'es income for a month, I'd collect the sum necessary to not to work for two years and learn stuff instead. Other muns I'd have used to develop our local revolutionary commune.
The relationship between corporations, workers, and teachers reminds me of a line from a movie. "We have purposely trained him wrong, as a joke." - Master Tang, Kung Pow! Enter The Fist
it could be the reason that wage earners make that face when they're working is they're high as shit. i don't THINK i make that face at work, but i'm definitely high as a kite at work. it's the only way to really get through the day doing something i hate repeatedly, over and over and over again. it also really helps wearing the covid mask at work because then people can't read your expression and you don't have to continuously fake smile when you're forced to greet people. you can just zone out but still do the "omg i'm soo happy you're here!!" voice. I can do that voice without the smile. I prefer to do it that way anyways.

The only reason is to appease my family. That’s it. I was conscious of this since I was 19 when I was working my first few jobs. I never liked working and always underperformed. I daydream all day and draw on notepads. I’m extremely unfit for a lot of these things and always got berated for it and called things like lazy, an idiot etc. At first I tried to be disciplined but it comes and goes. The hiring less workers bit and being at half capacity really hits home for me because working in retail and at the help desk I feel like I'm expected to do the work of 3 people at the desk and am only one of 2 people at this moment who closes at the desk while balancing a college workload. I hate hearing customers act like we're all buddy buddy or make a really upsetting and shitty joke like: you must've been waiting for me, you look bored, when I don't know them, if you had a problem here it would be my fault and not because you can't fucking read what the details on a deal are or because you're too old to understand how a phone works in the year 2024.

Former U.S. president, Ronald Reagan, did America a great disservice by allowing companies to employ foreigners to save money. Many factories went to Mexico and 3rd world countries. Many Americans lost their jobs because of this. America has still not recovered from this. If America was more of a producer than an importer, a lot more Americans - especially those who only have the skill and education to work in specific trades - would be employed and a lot wealthier.

If you're not trying to find employment, unless you have something major like schizophrenia or autism, you are a shame to your family. Shame is a good thing when it corrects someone's actions by the way. Your lifestyle would be impossible if you didn't leech off of others.
I'm 24, i'm working as a school inspector in Brasil, its the best work I had but it still sucks, worked as a graphic/web designer before and it sucked a lot more and payed less. But god, i hate it so much, doing dumb stuff like moving box is okay, the worst part is coming home and feeling like shit because 10 hours of my day were spent for just some cash, its good cash but i feel like a hoe. The worst part is that this year i will be moved from a little kids school to a teenager school, usually people who work with teenagers in this job get punched and kicked by them, because at least here in brasil that's the standard, you can get ass whooped by some kid and if you DARE to punch back you will lose your job and get beaten by their parents or even by thugs if the family victmize themselves enough. I know probably in usa the teacher can't just punch a kid, but here there's no punishment or education here, things like that happen and the next day you have just to accept it.

You either work because you're interested in the work you're doing, or you work for money. Working hard is either a personality trait or a necessity, not a virtue. Disliking having to work out of necessity is natural, hating to be overworked is healthy, but hating work itself is also not good, since the unfortunate fact of the world is that you can't make something out of nothing and for many people it's either work or perish. (And this is a natural aspect of the world so no, it's not just "fucking capitalism", go away, no one likes you, and those with more money than you don't really owe you anything either) We all should be striving to work less out of necessity, work more out of genuine interest, work smarter not harder, and produce more wealth, ideally maximizing the wealth we generate to ourselves instead of others.
I think you're dead right here, Emp. I don't think it's exclusively American but a basic human desire is to reach a point where you don't have to work, which is a bit ironic because when a human being reaches the point of not needing to have any of their needs fulfilled via work they may start to seek things to do- but then, those things are not necessarily "work" per-se. Then you have how a bunch of those guys who don't need to work futz around doing all manner of weird stuff to try and make more money, depending on who they are. Overall, I think that value for hard work primarily exists on a person-to-person level and on occasion by certain portions of society at large, but people mostly remember the ridiculously wealthy and their shenanigans, just like you say. Personally, people might like that you can or are able to work and work hard or well, but on a societal level it is not exactly valued. This can have some degree of nuance to it- in general, certain forms of "smart" work can pay more, like skilled fields and so forth, but then as you have mentioned there's also means of making money which can only really dubiously be called work, like trading stocks. Media as a whole might have a bit of something to do with this. Money talks, meaning that the wealthy can direct what gets talked about in media, and media is generated and driven by money- and of course, a lot of the people, little or not, who are responsible for media production will either consciously or unconsciously focus at times on wealth and the wealthy.

I guess i got super lucky that i was born with just wanting to do great work and also loving the industry 🤷🏻♂️. But i do feel for everyone else who doesnt love what they do, that must feel terrible, and i never want to feel that. Money has zero to do with why i show up still to this day.
I can hardly relate to your complaints about work, but I do appreciate this perspective on hating it so much. Your attitude/philosophy kind of reminds me of the author of "Bullshit Jobs''; that might be a book you might want to look into.
🎉 ESSENTIAL WORKERS 🎉 I remember working covid, also remember my managers had to run a furniture store as a skeleton crew while everyone else was laid off.
Emp, i agree that hardwork dont always pay. Its not the work that sets the value but how much society values the end result. Gates founded Microsoft, elon paypall and tesla. Hell, Steve jobs despite not inventing the smartphone he popularize it. Things that people want. You may question it but in the end its personal choice of each person. Also, did tim burners put the fiber optic cables between the continents? Does he maintain the infrastructure? Thats why he does not receive money for the invention. But people like to watch the Kardashians. I would say, work hard but in something that people want, need or desire.
Currently Things feel Dystopian with a sprinkle of Toxic Positivity. Our society feels more Lost now then it ever has. Basic living has never been so unaffordable. Society is solely focused on unhealthy capitalistic agendas. Where anything that isn't constantly increasing profits or gaining investors, is a failure and has no value to society.. Our Quality of Life should be better than this. Basic living shouldn't be this unattainable, this unaffordable. People should be able to have options so they can live their life's with a certain level of comfort and basic standards.. Even that can seem like such a far fetched dream these days.. Why is that? Thing's shouldn't have to be like that.. This is Modern Day America 👍🏻 and when you look at our government, it doesn't seem like anything is going to be addressed or improved anytime soon.. Maybe multiple generations from now, idk? All i know is vast change needs to be made. I'm tired of either side of our government. None of it is working. Hopefully motivated people will come in & help adapt this amazing country so it doesn't collapse in on itself. I don't get how our current situation can continue to be acceptable when it's clearly unacceptable? It's ridiculous how our current system pretty much requires everyone to be financially well off and that's just to achieve Basic Living Standards.. 👍🏻 (Sure is such a well balanced and healthy system?) 👍🏻 The Truth is that It's completely impossible for everyone to be financially well off. We need living options. We need places where average people can live, where poor people can live.. (Comfortably!) Raising wages has just continually made things worse because our stupid system insists that it has to increase things ACROSS THE BOARD in order to "compensate" *For minimum wage earning a $1 Dollar more! So in Reality, it sure seems like this "increasing the poorest people's wages" Is made out to seem like like it's such a taxing straining burden. It sure seems like it does nothing but make things worse.. All in all people need a place where they can live. Even if their poor, even if they make below average $ If our country and our society can find a way to figure this important issue out, I will then feel like we are going in the right direction again...
Honestly for eons humans worked to survive, not all of them thrived; the same goes for today just in a different form. It usually was a good rule of thumb that harder work meant more reward but in today’s complex society that becomes less and less the case.
One thing you're wrong about: it's not that Americans are "too good" to do a job; it's that illegal immigrant labor has undermined wages so much in those jobs that it is no longer financially feasible or sensible to work them as an American when there are better opportunities out there. Who do you think did those jobs before we imported all these people?
There are a few exceptions about hard workers getting recognized. There are a few tv shows about truck drivers who drive in slippery, muddy, icy roads in Alaska, fishermen who battle dangerous seas to collect huge harvest of fish, men who renovate antique vehicles and furniture, and tough lumberjacks who saw down trees to build log cabins. And the hunters of Duck Dynasty. Other than that, I can't think of any other examples.
A lot of the reason we're supposed to value work comes down to three things: tangible progress towards a goal, anti-communist propaganda, and holdover values from the great depression. We aren't getting any of the first, the second is being used as an excuse to avoid paying people a living wage, and the third is going to be with us forever once the SECOND Great Depression starts.
Am working hard to get good at my craft, i like it. And one day start my own business. But man so many people are suffering. My work buddy worked to hard and to much so now he is very injured. Probably for life sadly
You are doing what the old way was. Work hard at a job for ten years to get the necessary skills to start your own company and make a living from that. The unfortunate thing is that Baby Boomers and Gen X severely damaged that way of living with their obsession with easy money and consumerism.
@@Cross_Malaki Am no American. We didn't have the same baby bomer situation and I see opportunity. Because I have seen others make it. Incompetent people has well.
Another thing you need to realize (millennial or zoomer) is that you are not going to have the Life your Grandfather had. Working 50 years and Receiving a Pension and having a Stay at home wife you can spank.
