Apple’s new iPhone 14 and Apple Watch models can detect severe car crashes and automatically call 911. So can Google Pixel. But does crash detection actually work? To find out, WSJ’s Joanna Stern and Kenny Wassus enlisted a demolition-derby driver to crash cars at a junkyard.

Well I can add that this feature did in fact work in a real crash, mine! 2 days ago waiting to turn, a truck rear end me. Now I won't hazard a guess like so many, including this video, as to what activated it; just that it did. So after a very brief few curse session got out of car and my watch (series 4) started to vibrate and making sounds alerting me. Honestly was confused at first because forgot about the feature. Oh this was an Iphone 14 Pro Max. The phone was inside center console of a kia optima 2015, tethered. the cable was fine and phone fine. also airbag did not go off (which not sure good or bad but anyhow). Car also is still driveable even though trunk smashed in. So yeah it worked in a real situation and yeah 2015 Kia Optima does well in rear end collision :)

@RvdTogt

Bluetooth/CarPlay is one of the things it uses to detect you are in the Car. But you don’t need to be connected to let your phone know, since it also use motion to detect you are moving, which indicates you are driving. Bluetooth is only used to instantly know you are in the car. Motion detection takes a little longer for this to kicks in. So no excuses, but an explanation of the feature how it works.

A german youtuber called AlexiBexi also tried out if the feature activates. However he did it without crashes. The way he got it to activate was to drive and suddenly step on the break which abruptly stops the car. this then causes the iphone 14 to fly out of his pocket. while all this happened he also screamed to suggest the iphone something bad just happened.

Guys don’t worry too much about the feature “not working” once you do have the phone set up (quicker if you already had a iPhone before) Apple Maps/Find My, it will register where you left your vehicle park at. Every morning I wake up for school and head to my car my phone automatically detects that I’m gonna drive (even without connecting to Bluetooth/Apple Car Play, vehicles I use: 2017 Camry and 2007 Honda Fit) so yes most of these people testing these devices only really just set them up and get on with testing without actually daily driving the phone, I’ve had my iPhone 14 since lunch and every time it detects that I’m driving. While yes these system isn’t perfect we shouldn’t just judge what these types of tests bring out. Many people where able to activate crash detection with a short drive and crash others by just doing a hard brake while dropping the phone and screaming. So I would recommend to setting up the driving focus to help “improve” the chances of these features working more better.

@ThePretendgineer Год назад
The watch probably isn't really relying on force sensor as much as you would expect. Force applied to the end of your arm is nothing compared to what's applied to your body being strapped into a chair. It's more than likely using audio cues as the primary. That said, being NEXT to a car being rammed into by a tank isn't the same as being IN the car from a force or audio perspective.

As it was noted, this really didn't prove much beyond...if you get hit by a car *before you drive your car*, it won't know you've been in a crash. If you don't connect the phone to the car (carplay/bluetooth) the phone has no way of knowing it's even in a car if it hasn't been driven.

It doesn’t NEED to be in CarPlay, being in CarPlay is just an instant way to tell your phone that you’re in a car, if you don’t connect the phone it has to rely on other methods, such as movement and sound, making it harder to detect If the tested vehicle would’ve been driven for a while longer it’s likely that a crash would’ve been detected

I think instead of sticking firm the phones especially IPHONE 14 or pro it has to be loosened enough while testing and if it fall at least a fall detection works in this case could triggered alert to emergency contact. Yes the feature says car crash detection but its rare but possible standby car can also be hit by someone any place. May be they need to improvise this on any any shock it would need to trigger with say more countdown timer 15-20 sec may be.

Seems like you need the watch for the crash detection to work. It's also worthy to note that vehicles with hands free have tech built in like Sync, Apple car play, and Android Auto may trigger calls based on the vehicles info such as airbag deployment. Reference your vehicles manual, and check next time your phone is synced to your vehicle. This so called "new" feature from Apple isn't new... it's just a feature of the phone that has been around in another form for at least 9 year; at least the vehicles I'm aware of have had it.
