Can boiling always be relied upon to make water safe to drink? In this video I run through the considerations for dealing with pathogenic organisms and other water pollutants. In this context I look at the effectiveness and reliability of boiling in producing potable water in back country and wilderness areas. This video will be of value to hikers, campers, back country and wilderness travellers and anyone visiting areas where the water may be contaminated (pretty much everywhere there are people) or the cleanliness of the water may be uncertain.
This video forms part of a series of 20 FREE videos I've made to help people with wilderness bushcraft, survival skills and general outdoor life.

Hi Paul, Fan of yours from the states. Great video, the only thing I would add is that ALL enteric pathogens are killed by the time water has reached a rolling boil, and many of them die en route to boil. Certainly couldn't hurt to boil for a minute or two, but for most backcountry outings in the US and UK it isn't necessary. I'm a medical provider here and actually had to consult my wilderness medicine text when a patient asked me this!

Milbank bags and other filtering devices are great for removing dirt, leaves, bugs or other tiny turbidity and then boil. You can get sick even if you boil if there is alot of dirt or debri as the bacteria can hide inside the particles that insulates them from the heat. Turbidity can also cause gut irritation leading to diarrhea which can be dangerous in a survival situation.

I filtered it through primitive charcoal filter as it wasn't clear, water colour was still tea like even after boiling (due to tea trees in the swamp). To all those concerned about chemicals in the water: You could distill it, this would make sure the chemicals are either in the residue or broken down by hydrolysis. Of course if you chose to camp next to the effluent pipe of a chemical factory you may want to check if they produce any volatile chemicals, they could end up in your distillate. So you should throw away the first 20% of the distilled water to be sure. Then effectively, your distillate remaining is as good as rain water. I suggest to camp next to a brewery effluent pipe, chances are you get a few % alcohol in your water which helps keep it sterile and will allow you to chill out and stop asking such questions. Next time, we’ll discuss what to do when you chose to camp in Tchernobyl😉

Redcoat‘s Return well, we are in the fallout of Fukushima- they just don’t want you to know. But you can go look it up and see for yourself... As for rainwater...I don’t trust what’s coming out of those planes...and no, it’s not contrails 1) they have admitted to geoengineering 2) it helps to have family members in military and working security at the air bases who can attest to the fact they load are loading these planes with chemical agents and spraying them on the public (the spray is activated by controllers on ground, the pilots just fly 3) i live in military airspace, and I live extremely rural - some days there’s not a plane in the sky and others it’s like they are setting up to play tic tac toe. I’m also highly allergic to whatever they are spraying (aluminum, barium, strontium, LITHIUM- and yes, this is all verifiable as well).

Rain watter is not safe as well. There is to much air polution nowadays. The rain just brings the dust to the ground. Try drinking rain watter in Asia (mostly China) and you will ingest the entire periodic table. In Southern Europe (during summers) there is whats called dust rains. What happens is that winds pick up a lot of dust from the Sahara Desert and transport it North. During Summer rain is rare so the dust doesnt fall in the Meditteranian sea and reaches us - then falls to the ground via the rain. In the Balkans ,during summer time you have to clean your car after most rains because it changes color.

Personally, I don't think I'd risk any water that has been near crow growing land. I think I'd check with an OS map to see if its passed near any. Even if it hadn't directly passed through it, if it could have soaked spread from nearby locations. I think it's just one of the sad facts of modern life. If you live in intensely agricultural land, you depend upon processed water. I live near the I'm famous Red Gutter of the Battle of East Stoke. Apparently locals drag that but the spring was close by and hadn't touched farm land yet. Unfortunately its ran dry after the A46 was expanded. Even so, I'm not sure I'd trust everything the locals said because they also believed you could track the source with two sticks...

Sammy Khalil Thanks for your comment; I'm glad you appreciated my video. That's a good question - no it won't affect the water in a detrimental way. It will, however, use more fuel the longer you boil for. This is not so much of an issue if you have a pot or kettle over a campfire that would be burning anyway, but becomes more critical if you are transporting fuel. In the latter situation, fuel efficiency can be critical. I hope this helps. All the best, Paul

Interestingly, one time I did a water test on various sources of water: my pond, water from the tap, and bottled spring water. The electronic tester tests for man made contaminants and pollution. The results surprised me. My pond was near perfect, did not register any pollutants at all. The next best was the spring water; but it was not much better than the tap water, if my memory serves me right. I was shocked. So, in the back of mind, I've been wanting to try getting my water from the pond. The pond also has the perfect PH level, naturally. Amazing!!!

@pinay56 6 лет назад
Generally boiling does make water safe; however, there are microorganisms that can resist boiling, so if you really want to clean something, then you need to "autoclave" the item. Autoclaving is the use of pressurized steam to break down a microorganisms outer coating, such as some Mycobacterium; i.e. TB, or others that require massive use of disinfectants. But yes in most cases, boiling does get rid of maybe some 80% of the more common microorganisms.
@hostility2245
@hostility2245 6 лет назад
Wow, to even disregard the massive cost of the autoclaving equipment and energy costs to operate it and the limited amount of water that could be autoclaved because that is not what it was designed for. Autoclaving is designed to sterilize SOLUTIONS and MEDICAL EQUIPMENT such as scalpels, it would be extremely inefficient to use it to sterilize water even if the process yields the best possible results.

if you had ONE crusader set, and couldn't stop to boil your water, would you be concerned with contaminating your water bottle with creek water? would you collect the water in your bottle and later on, boil in the cup & pour the boiling water into your plastic bottle to sterilize the bottle for drinking? I have been considering carrying a second bottle for water collection to keep my drinking bottle clean.
@PaulKirtley
@PaulKirtley 10 лет назад
alzathoth I wouldn't recommend that method with two bottles. At some point you will get it wrong - when tired or thristy or it's dark or you're half asleep first thing in the morning. To keep on the safe side, keep your bottles for clean water only, unless you have chemical sterilisation agents (iodine or better still chlorine dioxide) which you can add to the water in the bottle. Pouring boiling water into a bottle will probably kill most stuff in there but it won't clean the bit that goes in your mouth and in particular it can be hard to clean the threads on the inside of the lid...

@PaulKirtley
@PaulKirtley 5 лет назад
To answer your question - yes rain water can be boiled then consumed. Depending on how you collect it, however, you may not even need to boil it. If you stand there in a rain storm, mouth open and pointed towards the sky, the rain water that enters your mouth is safe to consume. No need to boil. If you are using a sheet, tarp, roof or other larger area to collect a larger amount of rainwater, then bacteria on the surfaces the rain water is landing on, or the bucket into which it is being directed, might mean the water is no longer as clean as it was when it was falling from the sky. In which case, you may then need to boil it. More importantly still, if there are any toxic compounds (waterproofing agents on a tarp for example) that become intermingled with the water, then boiling will not remedy this. I hope this helps. Fundamentally rain water is safe. Keep it as clean as possible when you collect it. Warm regards, Paul

can I boil tap water to purify to drink it I drink alot of bottle water in a couple days im out and dont really want to get more right yet
@MrRocque
@MrRocque 7 лет назад
Firstly, purification is the process of removing ALL materials from the original substance. Since boiling removes NOTHING, it purifies nothing. Now, that said, sterilization is another matter. Typically boiling water will sterilize water (rendering organisms inert, unable to reproduce or kill) that are harmful to humans. Doesn't sterilize everything, but does a pretty damn good job on the things in it that can harm us. This doesn't remove anything, as I said...so any foreign substances are still there, sticks, dirt, chemicals...its all still in there. But yet, you can boil tap water to ensure its 'sterile'...but I'd suggest you clean any pot you use, or its gonna taste like last nights mac/cheese.

If boiling water is enough - why on market is so many water filters, purification tabs etc? It is better to filter and boil or really boil is enough ?
@PaulKirtley
@PaulKirtley 9 лет назад
***** Because on some occasions boiling is inconvenient. Having a fire - both collecting fuel as well as clearing up afterwards is time consuming. This is fine when in camp but not when you are on the move. Sometimes a fire is not permitted or just inappropriate. You may need to carry fuel in order to boil - particularly above the tree line. Using a filter allows you to conserve fuel.

I've heard if you can see crayfish in the water it is usually safe to drink, is that correct or no?
@PaulKirtley
@PaulKirtley 8 лет назад
No, that's not a reliable indicator as to the lack of presence of pathogenic organisms. You cannot tell by looking at water with the naked eye whether it is safe to consume. The organisms which will cause you problems are microscopic, therefore by definition, you need a microscope to see them. Water can be clear with a healthy stock of fish, crayfish, etc and still be full of protozoa and bacteria. Hope this helps. ATB, Paul

ok so boiling gets rid of pathogens and bacteria, but what about chemical or iradiated water say shtf senario. Better to live where the water is less contaminated. 😀😎 Born in Europe, but grew up and lived most of my life in the third world. Drank out of rivers and streams most of you wouldn't swim in. Never been sick, nothing like childhood immunity. You and your kids are too clean and overprotected, I feel sorry for them. The stream at the bottom of my garden has less than 50ppm and no pathogens

Don‘t go the path with two values.I don‘t care what the C DC advises. Take 4-5 Minutes in every case. I‘m around many Mountains. Time is no issue compared to the trouble. In Europe 4-5 Minutes is enough. In Region which you don‘t know make the 10 Minutes rule the Standard.

Will boiling kill harmful chemical toxins produced by cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), and do commonly available water filters (like those typically used for backpacking) remove the blue-green algae and its chemical toxins? Many thanks.
@PaulKirtley
@PaulKirtley 8 лет назад
+eqlzr2 Filtration will remove algae. Even using course filtration will remove this from the water. For example, I have successfully used a Millbank bag on lake water with a lot of algae in it on multiple occasions. The water was then boiled. Boiling alone, will not deal with the issue. A finer commercial filter produce will also remove the algae but they tend to clog quickly unless you pre-filter effectively. Again this could be a Millbank bag. But you can also protect the intake with some fine material such as parachute silk. This stops the larger matter in the water entering the filter unit. I hope this helps. Warm regards, Paul
@eqlzr2
@eqlzr2 8 лет назад
Thanks for the reply, Paul. I guess there is still some question in my mind about any harmful chemical products of cyanobacteria that may potentially remain even in filtered and boiled water.

Water collected from a clean stream would also be the ideal habitat of microscopic invertebrates (water fleas) I remember doing many surveys and every sample would have these things, they're not harmful but I'm a bit disgusted to know this. lol. I suppose it's not different than knowing our eyeballs have organisms swimming on the surface and that cheese and dust are full of mites, not to mention clothes and bedding. Sorry!! =]

As the question is asked, 'Does Boiling Always Make Water Safe To Drink?', the answer should have been NO!! Since boiling removes nothing from the water, all the pathogenes, organisms, chemicals, metals and 'dirt' are still in the water. Boiling sterilizes; or at least it sterilizes it enough that organisms that might harm us are killed or rendered unable to reproduce. But boiling does nothing to treat chemicals or metals in the water. So if the source is contaminated, you've just told people that boiling makes that source safe to use. Of course we can't tell if such things exist in the source, but this is one reason we encourage people to 'know the source and what's upstream'. The farther we are from mankind's things, the less chance there is of such contaminants in a source, but the question wasn't asked 'if I'm FAR away from cities and farms does boiling...' You did answer the question in as far as 'if organisms are the only concern', addressing boiling times and altitude. But I'm less then impressed that the claim was, catagorically, boiling does makes water safe to drink. And for those reading, not directed towards the author, there is a difference between purifying and sterizing; they are not interchangable and shouldn't be reinforced as if they are. To my knowledge, there are only two manufacturers that are recognized as having the ability to 'purify' water with their 'water systems' (filter pores as small as 0.02 microns or less), that can be carried in a backpack or on person. Everything else either sterizes (by chemical, UV light or heat) or just filters (removing most material, be it organisms or debris; measured in microns; but typically not including viruses) in as far as 'backpackable' water systems.

So, seriously, where do you get your pure water? Presumably not from the deepest trench in the ocean , or the South Pole, and certainly not the ‘cess- pit of Europe’. ( the UK )
