We train 2 ways in the Army, camouflaging and as y’all say it ‘breaking up’. Camouflage in general is essential to both styles. So yes it’s important, however, time and place. In a stand or blind, I would camouflage to blend with my environment because I treat it as a defensive or offensive readiness position. Breaking up would be used more for tracking over clicks/grid squares. Such as taking away abnormal objects (helmet, rifle, etc.) shape and color by adding wheat grass to my helmet and kit in a field, or whatever vegetation is in said vicinity. Now if you over do it like most hunters, the dumbest of animals know a pine tree doesn’t run across a tall grassy field, hence, time and place.
Hunters ! Good News ! Flat surfaces reflect light and coarse surfaces defuse light! This is one of the reasons that a wooden Red and Black checked shirt has worked beautifully for well over one hundred years. Plus the Game animals don’t see the pattern as a threat. Enjoy
Pretty much agree. In a good spot it doesn’t matter much. However if you have on a really good pattern for your specific location and you’re in a bad spot I think it can really help.
I grew up watching hunters going out on a hunt in a pair of levis and flannel shirts. But i will say its nice having the light weight clothing. Specially hunting in the West when its still hot.
@BVaccaro88 Article written a few years ago addressed this. Author wore khaki carhartt pants and brown carhartt jacket with a tee. He hunted deer and turkey. He said that the curiosity of the turkey made them confused and they approached him within 10 feet, because they couldn't figure out what he was.
I think your right on...Their flicker fusion rate is like a fly..everyone knows when you go to hit a fly and its gone before you start moving ...Everything is in slow motion to them. Movement is the biggest thing... But in my opinion I think some camos will help just a touch in certain situations. If your skylined in a small tree late season and just wearing like a pure mossy oak that's just brown and green..Your still a huge dark figure in a small tree.. Sitka elevated with the light grays and some white in there I feel it breaks up even more against the sky..Iv been in small trees with both and it always seems with the sitka they just don't notice you like they would in a darker leafy style camo..
Literally had a hen turkey walk 5 yds from my cousin in I. We got caught off guard and played down in green grass with not good camo for that situation. maybe 6 inches tall and she walked up to five yards may direct eye contact with me. Being still is the most important.
You will always fair better with camo than without. I believe in maximizing my ability to make myself invisible to the deer. Whether that is through camo or hunting the wind. It’s not about what you can get away with, it’s about what gives you the best chance of success.
From my experience, face masks will make or break you. A deer can see your facial features quite clearly & that’s what get’s them more than a silhouette will in my opinion. Not confirmed, just an opinion
I agree. I have had deer walk up to me while hunting pheasant and not see me in coveralls and bright orange vest with a bright orange hat. I still wear camouflage for deer though.
From my own experience for what its worth, i have seen deer adapt to different areas wheter public that was huted or over hunted or private land, once they encounter what the see as a threat they tend to be more cautious, camo will help break up the human outline and only help so much, but movement and scent will bust ya every time, i like my older realtree from the 90s especially being worn and colors are not vibrant like when they are new, trainkng yourself to sit still is key
YES AND NO, do we need camo to take a rifle shot from fifty to five hundred yards away? NO! but I have a buddy who takes most of his bow shots at elk from within ten feet….. ten feet! You can’t tell me you’re wearing a jean jacket and fedora to try and match what he does…. Fact is, he’s the only guy I know who makes those shots, and he is the only guy I know wearing the perfect 3D camouflage.
Deer can’t see very well. The only time they see like an Eagle is at dusk if the hunter is skylined. At times it feels like the movement from breathing to hard spooks them.
This is specific to deer. Camo certainly plays a more significant role in hunting other animals. For example, turkeys have very good eyesight and ability to detect movement.
Turkeys are curious birds. They will walk right up to you if your are sitting dead still in khaki carhartt pants and a brown carhartt jacket. Camo is a scam, scent and movement is king.
Hypothesis: A rhinoceros in your living room wearing a T-shirt with a sofa on it, would NEVER be seen. Proof camouflaging ourselves in forests, their home, works!
I have had deer walk right up to me while I was kicked back on a tree my academy 50$ puffy camo jacket and hood on so I honestly don’t think it matters for deer however as soon as I picked my head up it sensed I think my face color was different than my jacket and this is for ducks also I think they can tell the difference between light and dark colors
I mean great granpappy and grandpa killed many deer in denim overalls and a red flannel shirt chain smoking camels and drinking whisky. Some folks go nuts but you don't have to spend alot of money or go full ghille suit to be successful.
i had a deer stalk me, ok probally not stalking but get this. I was sitting on a starcase at a nearby boatramp afterdark smoking a joint and blasting music on my phone (not through a bluetooth speaker) all of a sudden i hear something behind me and swear to god a deer was 7 feet away sneaking up on me. Within a second i pointed my flashlight at it and it ran off. Fucking crazy?
