Hmm... thinking about the process of things rusting. The chemical process involves iron atoms and oxygen molecules reacting to create iron oxide which than sticks to the iron object. Meaning that the weight of the plate actually increases as it begins to rust. Provided that non of the rust flakes off. I'd be interested to see how the weight changes from brand new to rusted over to cleaned. Basically the entire cycle.

Vinegar bath does yield a more accurate result though. The problem with the angle grinder is that it takes off much more than just the rust. If the grinder was apart of a computer aided system, then it would have been better, but given its not, vinegar works much better despite it taking longer.

Most older cheaper metal plates are super inconsistent in how they were produced so some will weigh 47 while other weigh 43 regardless of the situation with rust

Try a wire brush for the angle grinder lol they make different styles too. A cone type that points with the spindle, disk style that points outwards. That should help for next time.

Try using citric acid to clean the metal. It's in the canning supplies. Leave it in for a few days. Higher concentration is better. We use this trick for cast iron pump housings.

I restored a rusty fence a few months ago with my uncle and he told me about Ospho. I was pretty amazed at how quickly and effectively it removed the rust from the fence. I sprayed it on and it looked like the rust was just a dirt stain that washed right off. (Granted, the fence had not been rusted for long, so it was mostly just surface rust)

@@KaizenDIYGym making an electrolysis tank would be the best by far, no chemical etching and it removes every little bit of the rust. it's extremely easy to do as well, not like some complex science experiment. you can use a car battery charger. just search electrolysis rust removal and you'll find many RU-vid videos that will help you out. it's a very simple process and you don't actually have to do much work as opposed to scrubbing and using brushes with other stuff.

Trust me vinegar or media blast or both is the only way you’ll get your parts rust free. The reason it’s easier to do it with the plate is that it’s a flat surface. You don’t need vinegar or a media blaster to get into the deep parts . But vinegar being a liquid reaches every single area , and can wipe it clear or just use some water and pressure. Trust me I live at the junkyard , rust is my life

You can take it too an electroplater where I work. We fix peoples stuff like this every now and then. Give it a new zinc cover so it doesn’t rust in future just avoid touching it with sweaty hands too much as that will corrode the material. ✌️

I enjoy that people are pointing out that rust would make it heavier but something i wish people pointed out is how you turned your cleaning vinegar (approx 1:1 ratio acetic acid to water) into white vinegar (approx 10% acetic acid)

Another thing you might could try is something used in firearm restoration all the time: boiling. Yeah, just boil it in water and the red iron oxide will be converted into black iron oxide, otherwise known as bluing. You will have to make several passes, and you might also have to re-oxidize the surface with easy to make chemicals, but it shouldn't lose too much weight, and it'll already have a rust-resisting coating over it when you're done. Backyard Ballistics is a great source for the process and science behind it.

@@ducdu4136 You get a little immersion heater. Then you plug/unplug it to maintain around the desired temperature. Or you spend a few more duckies on a temperature switch. Edit: Though I personally have never heard of temperature affecting rust removal with vinegar. Typically I see temperature being important for retrobright, or the whitening of yellowed plastics.

If you're into restoring rusty parts, you might look into electrolysis. You've already got a big plastic tub. You would need a battery charger or other DC power supply. There are YT vids on how it works. Its especially good for de-rusting places you cant reach. I used it to de-rust the inside of a gas tank before treating it with urethane coating.

If you need to clean rusty plates, use evsporust. It is much more effective than vinegar. Evaporust can also be reusable many times without any noticeable difference in its effectiveness.

Another thing that's important to note is that plate weights are notoriously inaccurate in relation to their actual weights vs what is notated on the plate itself. They can differ by POUNDS. meaning, a 45 lb weight might be 43.7 pounds, or it could possibly be 47.1 pounds. If you average 10 45 lb plates and find out the total weight it MIGHT be 450 lbs. So, taking a plate and wire wheeling it and then painting it isn't going to amount to a huge derivation in what the acceptable standard deviation is in relation to what is sold under a specific plate weight to begin with. What it will do is keep your home gym neater and not have rust that's getting all over everything. Unless you're setting world records it doesn't mean anything if it's a pound or two off because it's like that around the world. Saying you're benching 250 lbs means the same everywhere. You're still going to have the bar, four 45's, two 10's and two 2.5's. Whether that actually weighs 247, or 253. Matters not. You still say and everyone agrees you just put up 250.

Coat the plate in a rubberized coating to prevent corrosion buildup again should add the weight back.

My answer to this would be to get roughly that weight in paint and just cover it until it's all used, plus extra paint means it'll take longer to rust again

You could boil it in water, it converts the red rust to the black oxide form, which is stable and protects the iron. It's used to blue guns for example.

Quick tip, use coke or pepsi instead of vinegar. Stuff isn't good to drink but great for getting rust off.

Fastest way to remove rust with a chemical is a Krud Kutter liquid bath for about 45 minutes to an hour. I’ve used that on pitted metal from rust (not just surface rust) and I didn’t even have to use a wire brush.

Citric acid powder in with the vinegar speeds up the rust removal considerably. Works better and cheaper than other acid based rust removers. A lot of talk of pounds and ounces, pretty sure that plate is measured in kilograms. US and UK are so quaint with our miles and imperial measures.

Phosphoric acid converts the rust into a waterproof coating that really slows down formation of new rust. A 10:1 mix is used in industry. Phosphoric acid is one of the ingredients in Cola so that might work too though I haven't tried it. I imagine getting the sugar off wouldn't be trivial.

People don't realize that rust is heavy er the the metal itself, when you take the rust off you're removing mostly the heavy extra elements of rust (mainly oxygen) and the loss of metal is negligible. So in reality, he's cleaning the heavier stuff that formed after and restore the weights to their original weight give or take an ounce.

I'd absolutely glue tyre weights (motorcycle) or something onto it or add coat after coat after coat of paint until it weighs exactly what it's supposed to. Make sure the scale is perfect too. Maybe mix metal shavings into the coats of paint to make it happen.

I once set out to truck bed liner my frame and skid plates, I was asked if I thought it would add much weight to the vehicle, and said yep, about 4 cans worth of paint minus the cans themselves 😂
