Does curation actually make a difference on Medium?

Curation on Medium is a very sticky subject. Some people love it, others hate it, most don't understand it.
The problem I get asked about most often is that folks think curation is a silver bullet - once you're curated, you're guaranteed 1000s of views on your Medium story. The truth is (as always with Medium) a little more complicated.
This video describes as close to an actual scientific study as I could make: 2 nearly identical stories, published 2 weeks apart, with similar titles, content, and images. The only difference was one got curated, and the other didn't. See the difference for yourself!

Zulie, if you have time or want more content to create - would you consider doing a video on how to create a medium profile that looks professional? Ex: Your banner, and how you created it, what a good design / layout is for your profile ect. Love the videos keep it up. :)

I want to ask you something. People are complaining a lot about changes. Did you see the story from Daniel Lincoln? Is it the usual bickering or a real cause for concern? I would appreciate hearing your thoughts.

I haven't seen his post. To be honest, writers on Medium complain in a pretty cyclical way - way back in Jan 2019, views and earnings plummeted for nearly everyone, and a ton of people panicked and posted stories on Medium about panicking, which made more people panic. Right now, my views are way down, none of my stories are taking off in the way I used to be able to count on, and I assume my earnings are going to be lower this month too. But what keeps me going is that this isn't new - this happens to me (and most writers) once or twice a year as Medium shakes up their algorithm and we all settle into it. In the long term, it's beneficial for good writers. Bad ones tend to leave when this sort of thing happens, while good ones keep chugging along. In a month or two, hopefully, things will be back to normal. Just in time for the next shake up down the line :)

I appreciate and am encouraged by the insights into your stats! :) So far, half of my (very few) stories have been curated, and it's nice to see that it can have benefits over time as well. I'm wondering if you see getting curated as a choice you make because in my experience it just happens automatically when you write something good. I guess good writing is a choice, but from the way you speak about curation being "worth it", it does seem like it's something you put specific consideration into. Do you mean taking into account the curation guidelines?

Yeah good question. I think some people get fed up with the inconsistencies with curation and do give up (either writing to curation standards, or on Medium altogether) instead of thinking about it like a long-term game plan of continually aiming to write to curation standards. Hopefully that clarifies my comments!

Interesting video Zulie. I've had three stories curated, and none of them have taken off the way any of yours have. However I do have two stories that weren't curated that have taken off - however most of the traffic from those stories came from Google, not Medium.

It's worth thinking not just about views but revenue, too - most of my google-driven views don't pay much because most aren't medium members. hopefully as medium's membership grows, that will change!

Hey Zulie! When you publish do you promote on social media with a friend link? And how a friend link benefit you? Should we use it anyway?

I personally don't promote because I forget to, mostly! Friend links are great. It means you can share your post with people who are not subscribers to Medium, and it doesn't count against their 2-3 free stories per month. but, if they *are* paying readers, you get the same proportion of the money you would if they read it through a regular link. that's why I always send a friend link in my newsletter - no harm to me, and potentially benefits to my readers.

Just remembered a question I have been meaning to ask for ages. If you publish a response to an article it asks if you want to add tags. Should you do so? I don't understand the purpose because any comment would be on the same topic as the original article which should be tagged correctly anyway.

Thanks Zulie for making such great videos about your Medium experience! I had an article about the US election that saw a huge spike in views (compared to what I usually get). I have 2.6K views for it, but I haven’t submitted my tax information so I can’t earn anything yet. What kind of amount would I have made? They seem to make it really awkward for UK citizens, because we have completely different tax forms, so I’m not sure how to go about it.

Member read time is a better estimate - I usually get about $1.50 per hour of member read time. As I get more hours, the worth goes up, so while the first hour is $1.50, 50 hours will be more like $100. This depends on your audience though - Medium's formula for pay allocation is fairly complex!

I wouldn't say so, no. As long as they're 16 minutes of good content and not fluff, the length doesn't matter.

yes! I'd stay away from making big changes, but you own the story so you can do whatever you want with it, including edits.

Your tiresome tweets article came up on my feed but I didn't read it (sorry!). I expect the word tiresome put people off so maybe something more emotive like infuriating might have got you more readers. I assume reads can have a snowball effect in that the more people read an article the more Medium recommends it to others, gaining even more readers and so on.

Good point! Yep, that's absolutely the case - the more engagement your story shows, the more medium shows it to people. in this case it looks like my title put people off.
