I'm still trying to grasp the value behind having non objective human decision directing traffic to chosen stories vs other stories and how this can keep the platform interesting for readers and writers. Nothing against the stories that've been chosen to get boosted or the lucky/happy writers, of course. Just trying to get this from a content perspective.... will have to wait see how this unfolds. For now, I'm afraid it can become a dangerous tool if in the hands of imperfect humans.
Thanks for another generally very interesting and useful interview. I’ll have to read your ChatBot story now. However, I was disappointed in the answer to your question about whether small writers could get boosted. Obviously as you know I’ve a vested interest but to use the example of a writer with no followers writing just one story on a topical subject I found very limited. I can’t believe that you meant ‘small writers’ in that sense. I would’ve preferred he make a more answer relevant to the thousands of medium writers with anything from 50 to 150 followers who are writing well and regularly. Also in Medium’s terms how is ‘good taste’ defined? Such a subjective issue!
Hey Zulie, it was exciting to see Breana and Scott come on to give us insider insights behind the Boost! Thanks for this video! Yeah that conspiracy theory is something I hear a lot too. So it was good to hear this conspiracy theory quashed! But I do have a concern that Medium might deprioritize fiction and poetry. Not to mention erotica, which isn't even eligible for distribution! My opinion is that we could all choose to turn on or off a Safe Search button, so that readers who want to read erotica, can easily find great erotica. Readers who don't like NSFW can just turn on the safe search and not see any of it. But back to poetry and fiction, will they also have a fair chance of getting boosted? Since they typically get the short end of the stick, unfortunately. The audience for fiction and poetry may be smaller than the audience for nonfiction, but there definitely is an audience for them! To be clear, I write in all of these genres, haha. Whether fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or erotica. So you could say I have a vested interest in all of them, lol.
Just saw an article today that was Boosted. It was NOT high quality. In fact, it was so bad, I'd feel ashamed to push it out to my own readers. Someone at Medium needs to learn the definition of high quality. 🤣

Sinem directed me and her other students to this video, for which I'm grateful. Now I'll go write my first piece since 2020. It is on honour of all the poets out there. Hi Zulie, thank you for your video. I was not aware until now that Medium is trying to boost articles. Medium has been experimenting with different methods to help readers and writers (do you remember the "hand clap"). I'm a little confused about how Medium is expecting readers to recommend which articles should be boosted; however, I like the idea of paying readers if they suggest a good post to be boosted. I hope that Medium will identify which publications are involved in the boosting process because this certainly guides me to which publications to submit posts to. I'm unclear about the comments that readers can "now save their curated lists" - is this the same as creating and saving reading lists? I have about five reading list categories under my profile, e.g., writing, business, and health -posts I'm reading and saving for future review. Thank you.

I got an email telling me an article was gonna be boosted 8 days ago. The grand result... 10 views. Which is less than it was getting pre boost. I think I'm the only writer on Medium to have been deboosted.

'Boosted on Medium' would mean click baiters out there are gonna get more views. I'm surprised how Medium allows cheap writers to write for Medium publishing groups.

@@ZulieWrites His point does hold some water. Some of the interviewees repeatedly mention high view count as an indicator for Boosting. Clickbait will create that. Favouritism among publication editors will kick in, and high load of Boost submissions will result in Medium curators just approving it. The article I mentioned in my comment is a clear example of that already happening. This will probably not be the norm, but a good 10-15% clickbait garbage will get further amplified overall over the next year and that is regrettable.
