When I started learning German I used Duolingo alongside other material to learn, it was actually quite helpful, mostly providing vocab; it’s true that it won’t make you fluent but it surely helps. Also sigue así hermano, saludos de México 🤙

I've watched a number of videos that criticise Duolingo, but I would say it's OK for language learning, in my personal opinion. I use it for Japanese, but it's only a small part of the picture. Duolingo does a decent job of scratching the surface of the grammar and building up my vocabulary, then Anki and WaniKani (a popular site for learning kanji) are my other resources used for improving my abilities. Duolingo also has Duolingo Events; free Zoom calls with other learners or natives wanting to exchange, which I think is a super useful resource. Also, the gamification on Duolingo does keep me doing it even on busy days (three kids and a full-time job!). tl;dr - If you like it, go for it, but you should probably mix in other methods too

Hello there :) A video on how to learn a language as fast or as effectively as possible would be amazing, especially coming from a polyglot! :) Cheers
@Noah-go8xc
@Noah-go8xc 2 года назад
Even though this comment is a year old now, I'll answer. Learning a language takes years of practice and many multi language speakers have brain connections that make learning languages easier than others because they learned languages when they were young. The technical explanation behind this is that in childhood and adolescence, you form connections non-linearly, so you are able to make brain connections much faster. ALL polygots have connections from a young age that greatly improves their ability to learn languages. My advice to you is to practice, get hobbies, and keep your brain active if you're truly dedicated to learning languages. Hobbies, especially creative ones, are proven to keep your brain lively and help create neuropathways much faster. There is no LEARN A LANGUAGE IN TWO MONTHS WITH THIS SIMPLE TRICK method.

Keep up the good work!

I've used Duolingo for a while, it is definitely useful alongside actual communication and watching/listening to native speaker content. When I started learning Duolingo eased me into language learning, if I had just looked at books and podcasts I would've felt discouraged, Duo makes it basic and fun to start and now I do most of my learning without them.

I'm learning japanese, i use duolingo but i also read the comments, look up questions I have on the web, and consume japanese media(such as anime). I dont wanna be fluent, write in Japanese, or know all kanji. I just wanna be able to understand it. I like duolingo because it repeats things to stick it in my head. Of course this shouldn't be my only source, which Is why i watch anime to try to solidify harder my understanding. Basically I dont wanna be 100% fluent. With the set up I have, will I be able to accomplish my goal of understanding japanese well? I put in about 40-70 minutes each day with all of these.

Don't really agree that Duo is completely useless. If you have no language skills it teaches you some basic words and grammar in a fun way. Of course you need supplementary materials, that's out of question. But I reached B1 french with duolingo, listening to french podcasts and reading Harry Potter. Plus it's free which is a huge plus for most people. Should duo be the only thing that you use to study a language? No, definetly not. Can it help. Sure!
@santiglot

Interesting. Now my contra-argument would be that if you had not used Duolingo and instead you had invested all your time into consuming real content (books , podcasts, etc..) I think you would have made even more progress. Happy to hear from you Max :D

I totally agree that the better way to improve a language is consuming media, but for me is very uncomfortable start with that if you don't know nothing about the target language. In French, for example, I didn't know nothing so I spend almost two weeks learning basic sentences and reading basic stories at Duolingo, it helped me a lot. Now I'm able to listen a simple podcast with transcript and catch the unknown words in a much more comfortable way. It do I feel more interest in the content, consequently I spend much more time "studying".

Hi Santiglot, this is the 2nd video of yours I have watched. I do understand your stance of animosity toward Duolingo as a language learning app. The gamification process is quite useful for people with ADHD to keep learning new words. It's not a one source solution at all, but it has proven to be a useful as something I want to visit every day when not being able to feel the same response with any other method. I've been using it as a supporting tool to watching polyglot videos featuring my target language and other resources such as posters. The sentences on that app are ridiculous, but they're also not the same thing as everyone else is putting out. Repetition is a valid way to learn words. I can appreciate that it's not as much as it would like us to believe, but I do still find that it is useful to myself and those I know who use it as a supportive tool.
@santiglot
@santiglot 3 года назад
My "animosity" is just performative, I don't hate Duo. I just think that it's ideology is awful. For example, as you well said, Duo appeals to people with short attention span... I don't want to encourage that behavior... I want people doing actual work. And if you want to do casual relaxed work, that's fine, but there are so many better alternatives to Duo, so many! Repetition is good, yes. But when gamification becomes an excuse for wasting our time using bad methodologies, I don't like that. I always recommend Anki, that's repetition too, but it actually works Anyways, thanks for you well thought-out comment, I appreciate it :)

I really like duolingo as a casual learner. I'm not too concerned about learning to speak fluently, I just enjoy learning another language slowly in a casual capacity and duolingo is almost perfect in that regard. If you really want to learn a language to proficiency, I totally agree with Santi that you need other sources, you can't become fluent through duolingo alone, but it is pretty decent supplementary material.

Although I think Duolingo has taught me some basics of Spanish, I HATED the “game” aspect. Language should not be a leaderboard competition. I’m still trying new things to try and learn Spanish but I always feel embarrassed when I try to immerse myself in the community around me. I keep thinking that they’re thinking I’m just a weird “gringo” trying too hard. I love the language. I wish I could progress further than the basics. :(

What I find difficult is finding input at an absolute beginner level when I start a language. Most physical and internet materials for learning languages are present-practice, not communicative. Most reading and listening materials aren't both comprehensible (with limited new words at a time and high repetition) and communicative (reading or listening to it for the purpose of learning new information, building relationships, or for entertainment, not to practice vocab or grammar). The best approach seems to be searching RU-vid for teachers teaching the language using TPRS or CLT. Are there free resources to read, listen to, and watch things in a language that are both comprehensive and communicative for beginners?
@santiglot
@santiglot 3 года назад
Depending on the language finding interesting comprehensible content as an absolute beginner can be very difficult. But as I said, it depends a lot. What language are you learning? In general, I personally don't worry to much about that because I start talking with natives from day one, that's why I always get all the input I need and more.

Duolingo is just "fun" way of learning some basic words and grammar. I always hated langs lessons in school and reading books etc its similiar to that i pref more media/interactive/virtual way of learning. Like ive learnt mostly by playing in games and after games i was watching alot of yt content. I had interactions with other ppl who did speak to me in english so i could analyze every sentence etc keep translating some english words etc. When I was living in UK(London) ppl could understand me pretty easily and i havent had any problems with speaking back to them even accent wasnt a problem at all. Duoling will make you learn slower, but more interactive way... which makes learning and doing something more fun and it can be a lil bit boring, but not in 100%. Its really "cheap" way of learning any fundamentals of langs and actually duolingo really does helps me with german and i understand much more every time im closing the app cause when i see germansentences or descriptions of IG's posts from german ppl i can understand every single time really more than the last time when i checked or saw german's sentences or anything about german. Obviously duolingo is not "the best" way of learning languages, but it really does help you with the fundamentals which are actually helping alot. I think that you're not enough objective about duolingo tbh. The easiest way will be always speaking with natives and thats the key, watching or listening to podcasts etc really does helps me for an example with british accent which im actually learning nowdays, so ye. P.S I also forget to mention.... I would like to use babel, but I don't have a money atm for such an app like Babel is actually and i think its one of the most mainstream apps which are actually really good :) Anyways I really do love your content, but I think you don't see the app as casual person sees it(or atleast you didnt seem like you know how does casual person thinks about the app)

Is there an app or website that you would recommend instead of duolingo? I realise that it isn't the best method but I don't know what other option to choose. The main language I'm learning is French and I'm also doing some Swedish and Japanese on the side (I will focus more on those when I think my French is at an acceptable level). Ps. I discovered your channel in the last week or two and enjoy your content, especially the omegle videos. Keep up the good work!

Hey man I've only found your channel today but I would love to see how you learn languages (especially 中文)I know it's a very common thing that people go over but I don't feel like I'm going about learning Chinese in a very good way. I'm going to subscribe I hope you can do a video like that soon :) also thought I'd just add what I am doing in case you read this - - - I've been doing Anki flashcards a deck called Spoonfed with 8000 sentences that are sorted by difficulty and slowly introduce new vocab starting from the very basics. If I have a hard time remembering any words in particular I put them into another deck which I go over the next day before the Spoonfed deck. - - - I'm also trying to listen to a lot of Chinese songs and podcasts even though they are way above my level for now. --- That's it really I've been too nervous to try speak Chinese with my coworkers because I'm a bit shy and I don't want false praise which I know is something that's common with Chinese culture any tips would be amazing but it will keep notifications on just in case you do make a video on the topic of how you learn languages.

Duo is okay as the bare bones starting point for me. You cannot use this ap to advance in any way, even to upper beginner. And it certainly doesn't make you prepared to speak with others. HOWEVER the Duolingo podcast is WELL DONE. And honestly, for me, pimsleur is the absolute best to use as a starting point for a language. It actually gives me confidence to speak (vs my years of uni which makes me afraid of grammar mistakes). Anyways I've been studying Mandarin, Punjabi and Russian for years now. That's my two cents. I agree, no matter how much time I spend on the Duolingo ap, it never advances my skills.
@santiglot
@santiglot 3 года назад
I've checked the Spanish Duo podcast for example and it is an improvement compared to the app, but the content is still very low quality. So I wouldn't recommend those podcasts, because there are hundreds of others podcasts on the internet that are way better and free. People talk very well of Primsleur, but idk. I prefer always to find and create my own materials. Wish you the best in your studies xoxo

I would have taken you seriously but your content is biased, it's obvious you either trying to put that app down for other personal reason or misinformed. you say " you learn nothing n duolingo content is really bad ? " I understand that it may not be as good as actual practice with a live person, but I noticed that now duolingo has reading, listening and testing, every day it asks you to find the words or sentence so for sure you did not learn nothing, If you do it just 20 minutes a day for a year I guarantee u ll know a ton more than if you had watched another of your youtube videos

I’ll be honest that I did start learning a language with duolino, but the constant notifications,l and emails is what drove me away from it. I still remember when I got an email saying “You made Duo sad :( “ after not doing anything for a few days. So now I’m using Rosetta Stone and Anki, but I’m not sure if that’s better. The “communicative method” sounds interesting, but I don’t think I’m anywhere near being able to hold a conversation.

Hahahaha poor owl, he was sad lmao. Anki is the best app you can use to grow your vocab, I use it everyday. The communicative method is just engaging with the language in a real way, you can do it by reading, chatting or talking, it doesn't matter if you can only say basic things or you make mistakes. No one is born knowing, don't worry. Wish you the best!
