Hello Resellers!
Let's talk about Ebay throttling your sales, and so called sales cap on Ebay. Do they really exist? And what can we do about them?

throttling = the suppression or prevention of an activity. I think we are in agreement perhaps just circling around the definition of the word. The outcome of lowering impressions or moving them to less advantageous placement results in throttling of a sale. BUT I think they only do this to less than top rated sellers, and a little bit to get you to promote. eBay wants and NEEDS the sales to collect the final value fee AND the dreaded Promoted Listing Fees. Interestingly, in the past 2 weeks I have gained impressions by 10%, lost page views by 12.5%, and sales have increased by 20%. Go figure.

Lol, nothing makes sense anymore. But to this, Pete makes the logical stance of WHY... the only counter I have is look at the collectibles and media categories... how many people are legitimately have success in those categories? Is this done intentional? If so why? OR is it a result of the greater economic issues happening right now? Remember, there was a ton of conversation about March... so we may have a better understanding by the end of this month.

@polish_pete_uk I haven't heard anything official. My guess is since the search algorithm is AI based and they boasted about the doubling of their GPU power before end of Q1, that search will function better?! But... it could just be gossip lol.

@primokimo I've started to look on impressions a bit different now. If, for last 7 months (maybe more, I haven't checked that far) my impressions are 5-7 mln, no matter what I do, then logic thing to do, would be to try to repleace PL with organic, non-search with search. Trying to get more views out of them, which should give me more sales. If ebay gives me constant quantity of impressions, then let's work with that, and try to improve quality.

@polish_pete_uk Ding ding ding... Pete the philosopher we need! I've been trying to mentally section off the theories, the logic, and my personal experiences. What I have accomplished is the ability to start thinking outside of the box. As you said, if we are gated with traffic, why not look at that as opportunity and fund a way to convert what we have instead of complaining about what we don't have... glass half full mentality.

Does eBay have the computing power? Of course they do. Do they have the software ability to monitor in detail all of the activity of the accounts on eBay.? Of course. That is no big deal to do that. I worked in systems for 40 years, this is no big deal. I would daily run analysis on hundreds of millions of records of detailed data and what I was doing was nothing. The costs are largly sunk costs for the purchase of the hardware and the developer costs. The actual cost of running the analysis on the system is miniscule.
@polish_pete_uk
@polish_pete_uk 7 месяцев назад
Yes, but analysys alone is not enough in this case. You have to apply correcting measures. Different, for different accounts. And for what? For what I ask? What is the reason? What ebay wants to do by suppressing certain accounts? If it wants to eliminate listing with low chance of selling, then that's fine, but there hundreds of people claiming that ebay is suppressing them, and they have no fault whatsoever. Which is what I challenge.

If you are curious I'm a logistics analyst for a large garbage company. My last video I mentioned that there are millions of sellers, those that are struggling are less then 50% for sure. There are major winners right now and we need to figure out how and why they are winning. Unfortunately, there are very few people expressing how they are winning. I want to be Charlie Sheen... bi-winning and I will achieve that lol! Thank you Pete!

Exactly my mate. If there are people that have lost half of their sales, there must be people who sell more. There's no chance that on 1st of April half of Ebay sales just vanished. Plainly impossible. Somebody had to get those sales. And we need to be those people.
@NashTV8

I'm one of the 50% who are winning(up 35% year-over-year, -with 500 less items), however I feel more throttled than ever,...so maybe most of the 'winners' should actually be getting MORE sales,...but there's no way to know for sure.

Ebay just released the promoted listing money they have pulled in since 2019. 4.1B with a B. The biggest money spinner they have on the platform. Until resellers stop promoting and hitting them in the pockets they wont be backing off.
@polish_pete_uk
@polish_pete_uk 7 месяцев назад
Yes, but if you split it per year, and compare it to 10B total yearly revenue, this number stops to be so impressive. All I'm saying is, ebay will not give up on FVF supressing listings, to get some change out of PL.

You can build an ai algorithm on your phone. So yes eBay does have a powerful algorithm that controls sellers. 2:49

I'm not an expert, but have to disagree. Build me an ai algorithm that controls 5 million accounts, on 25 different factors, every 5 minutes and applies 5 correcting measures to every factor. That's not even 10% of what ebay would have to do.
@MarioLuigi-vb3rp

@@polish_pete_uk my guy if it can be done on a phone then yes a large server room can do that. And I live here in San Jose and eBay is large and I know people that work for eBay some people i grew up with. So yes the algorithm exist. eBay’s first introduction of this was called Cassini. So stop please and take a step back. It’s obvious they have to do it this way. If only a certain set of sellers sold and others could not then more people would stop using eBay. So the sales have to be divided at times. Super high sell through at a low price beats this algorithm. But if you sell a super high sell through item at the same price as others it will take longer to sell. If everyone is selling the same shirt the algorithm would have to divide those sales as evenly as possible to retain sellers. eBay doesn’t exist without buyers and sellers this algorithm in theory is suppose to create some utopia equilibrium but in reality its turning eBay into its new name glitch.

I always say eBay's platform eBay's rules. Everything they do with their platform is in the intrest and benefit of their business and their shareholders. As it should be (with the exception of what some rogue employees and rogue management did and were convicted for). It is not a government entity or a charity that should work for the benefit of the population. If they hinder or cap sales by some and push sales by others becuase they feel this benefits their business well it's their platform and their rules. There are alternatives and we can sell there. If they kill their business with stupid policies or stupid software design then over time these alternatives will become much better than ebay for selling on as they take the business eBay lost.
@polish_pete_uk

And that's exactly what it is. If Ebay does any form of capping anything, that's only to earn more money.

I was doing very from Jan well into Feb but it dropped off a cliff in March. So much for your theory that Ebay rewards you for doing well. How does the algo rhythm if you have too many orders. Do they know how many people work for you?
@polish_pete_uk
@polish_pete_uk 6 месяцев назад
What have you done to loose your sales? Defect? Bad feedback? Late delivery? Too many rejected offers? Late or no respond for the question? There can be many reasons for a traffic stopper. Sales have nothing to do with it. Sales are only an outcome of traffic quantity and quality. You're listings went down in search results, and there was a reason for it. As to the second part: They know for example, that you've dropped the ball, mate. If you leave one order behind undispatched, and not clear it to zero, they know you're not coping with workload. And it doesn't matter that you've dispatched it next day, and it was still in time. You didn't clear it, you're not coping with the workload. Just an example. I don't know what has happened on your account specifically. 9 time out of 10, when my sales drop, I know why.

@@polish_pete_uk well I did get one undeserved negative feedback last week. I have had them before without any known effect. I've had several neutral feedbacks for quite some time so I don't know how much they come into play now. All my other metrics are perfect and I'm a top seller
@polish_pete_uk
@polish_pete_uk 6 месяцев назад
After receiving that neg on Saturday, I had very poor weekend, until I've sat down on Sunday evening, and pushed some sales. But I had to do the leg work to get them. It's always like that for me after neg feedback. Even if I manage to get it removed, damage is done, velocity is lost. I base my entire shop on algorithm, so I don't have many sales that have been done without algo's help. Any defect is a strong traffic stopper to me.

Pete, we think a lot alike. Or maybe we just think. I spend a lot of time contemplating the "why" of things. That's why I never believed eBay sabotaged its own bottom line in 2023 to "force" people into PL. Fiscally, that would be reckless. Throwing away all those 13% fees to claw back an additional 2% from 16% doesn't make any sense. I have 40K listings. If I sell 400 in one day, I am in trouble. eBay needs to make sure that won't happen. This type of throttling is logical, and it needs to be in place. I've also had too many great days followed by very weak days. I've seen this pattern again and again. There is some throttling going on there, but I can't explain the logic behind this one. What I would also like to know is: If only 1/6 of people use PL, how come PL doesn't increase sales dramatically? Whenever I have ever tried PL experiments, I never gained any sales, just fees.
@polish_pete_uk
@polish_pete_uk 7 месяцев назад
Make a search and check how many PL is in first 100 results. Its chasing few spots for extra money, when there's way much spots that can be achieved for free. PL is nothing extra. It's the same search results. Only extra placement vie PL is non search impressions.

Biff, you know I'm an admirer. But respectfully your model is less sophisticated than documented disruption to sales occasioned by algorithmic engineering. I'd like to send you a citation for a relevant research article. Platforms do not have to cut sales to bury listings. They can bury listings while boosting GMV simultaneously. If you are interested in reading it, please lmk where to send.
@NashTV8
@NashTV8 7 месяцев назад
Why isn't Pete acknowledging your example of "400 sales", -which is 100% true, THAT is a form of throttling. Ebay has control of your sales, views, and traffic. And then there are 'fake-maintenance' dead-zones from 10PM to 6AM almost every night for the last year to favor Temu-like transactions. That's throttling. Many listings are on a queue for a few days before they can be seen. Search results show 40 item results when there are actually 80 item results, -and if you sort by 'lowest' price there will suddenly only be 12 results. That's throttling. Ebay's "responsible growth" throttling is a fact, -ebay doesn't need to personally stalk each seller to enforce this.

Not ALL TRAFFIC IS THE SAME!! They throttle by certain stores getting certain buyers. I have been trying to figure out how and how they favor some stores. I have found a few stores selling crap sell through items and can get top dollar for crap Brand clothing. My pics are better but they will get better sales for worse brands then me. There are a small group of stores that the algorithm favors and they get buyers that will pay higher prices. With the algorithm eBay knows what sellers are likely to sell what kind of items and I think they match buyers that will buy in that price range. So to improve sales you have to figure out how to grow your store in a way you get the better traffic. It's like changing from "no offers" that you had off for 1 year to allowing offers, in the beginning you dont get offers. The algorithm takes a few days to a week to slowly realize you are accepting offers and start driving that kind of buyer to you. It's strange but you have to teach the algorithm how to treat your store
@polish_pete_uk
@polish_pete_uk 7 месяцев назад
That's what I was trying to say. In my opinion it's 90 days. I had to do good job in selling for 3 months, and then algorithm gave me better traffic, so I had 60-70% more views from the same number of impressions.
