I've written a manuscript for what i now understand is autofiction. There are so many events that would cause so many people grief that i had to adopt a pen name and change the names of people, places, etc. I want to share that story but it wouldn’t be possible without the veil of autofiction.

It sounds then that you have made the right decision to go with autofiction. It sounds like it will be an interesting read.

This is the best video in clarifying the four separate terms: fiction, autobiographical novel, autofiction and memoir that I have ever come across. It has puzzled me for ages. Thank you so much for your insightful videos in helping me make a start in the first draft of my memoir. All of your videos are so helpful. Like a guiding light.

My book was born a memoir, but like so many unruly children, it grew into autofiction simply because the truth of the memoir, despite a compelling story, left out major insights i only realized while writing. I suppose another option would be to tell the story from the writers perspective in the here and now. I ditched this option because it felt contrived. I'd have to constantly shift perspectives, making for a chaotic reading experience. I truly appreciate your insights on this troubling matter.

Thank you. It's great you found your solution. It's interesting how the writing process reveals this dilemma.

I can't find any references to my idea of an autofiction collection of short stories using a character that isn't myself.

I don't suppose you can as that doesn't strike me as a common genre.

Over the last year I've been writing memoirs. Most of it is based on clear recollection of events and conversations, etc. I have organized my writing into specific chapters so that they read like short stories. In many of the chapters I have included elements of fiction - especially if there's something that I don't completely remember (some of it goes back 50 years). And some of it is included for artistic reasons. My question is: should I include some sort of disclaimer, perhaps in an introduction? Should I call some of it autofiction but retain the label 'memoir?'
@BrendaSmitJames
@BrendaSmitJames Год назад
Great question, Eric. I think it will depend on how much of your memoir is as accurate as you remember it and how much is intentionally fictional. If the percentage is that less than 10% is fictional then I would say making a disclaimer could be sufficient, and perhaps in your title you could refer to it as a mostly true memoir e.g. Jenny Lawson's memoir is called, Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir

From your analysis Prince Harry's book Spare may not be a memoir but autofiction. With so many historical facts and inconsistencies why is it not considered autofiction.
@BrendaSmitJames
@BrendaSmitJames Год назад
I think the simple answer is that memoir sells better than autofiction, especially a celebrity memoir. Unfortunately, many times, books are called memoir when they don't always qualify and so the term memoir is loosely applied to any book that is a recollection of my life in some shape or form. Have you read Harry's book?
@kaxar6954
@kaxar6954 Год назад
@@BrendaSmitJames I have not. Just read extended text and listened to a few of the audio clips. Surprisingly, Harry admits that his memory is flawed and has problems recalling events, yet this book is marketed as a memoir. Perhaps the editors were not thorough enough. Will be interesting to see if the publishing company releases a statement.

@@kaxar6954 that is not good, especially if his inaccuracies reflect badly on others.

Is this the same as creative nonfiction?
@BrendaSmitJames
@BrendaSmitJames Год назад
Great question, Georgia. No, autofiction is not the same as creative non-fiction. Autofiction is autobiographical fiction, where there are elements of the story that have been dramatically changed or invented. In creative non-fiction, the story is true (no exaggeration, embellishment or invention) and the writer uses good prose - really good description, relatable characters, lyrical sentences - and also literary devices traditionally used in fiction to construct a well written piece of work. Creative non-fiction is defined as true stories, well told, and can appear in different mediums including books and memoir.
