Does Flushing Your Car's Engine Actually Work? || Before and After

Here's a before and after look at what happens inside your car's engine after a 20min flush with transmission fluid!
Transmission fluid is known to have detergents that are good at cleaning sludge and built up debris. When used in an engine, it can provide a cleaning action to the engine's lubrication circuit, which includes the engine head, camshafts, oil galleries and passages, the oil pump, oil filter, oil pan / sump, crankshaft bearings and piston skirts.
In this video, a neglected 1999 Lexus ES300 with 273,000km is subjected to a 20 min flush with just ATF in the crank case. The old oil is drained, a new filter is installed, and a look under the valve cover and oil pan is taken before and after the flush.
Results indicate marginal improvements visually, with the black tarnish remaining on most parts of the engine, though softer to the touch to break apart. The filter picks up some minor speckles of debris, and the transmission fluid changes color from mixing with the remaining old oil in the engine. Overall, on an engine in really rough condition, more drastic results may be noted, but it was not worth the flush on this engine.

Two mechanics that I have a lot of respect for have told me to just use a high quality oil and do several changes at 1500 - 2000 miles to clean an engine. It's more expensive amd takes more time than using a can of engine flush but it's also giving the engine the proper lubrication. The detergents in oil aren't as harsh as a flush, either amd doesn't tend to dislodge big chunks that can clog an oil gallery or remove something that's actually keeping an old gasket or seal from leaking.

This. Takes time to build up, takes time to clean up. I did it with an old abused car. New cheap nasty oil in, use the oil until its black then change, no real time/kms just when its dirty. Took about 4 changes and a month.

Totally agree. I bought a Vectra with 180,000 kms and a lot of carbon under the valve cover. I ran full synthetic oil for a few months and the amount of carbon I found in the oil filter housing was extraordinary. The inside of the valve cover was much cleaner than before. The engine died from lack of compression some months later and I wonder if the carbon buildup wasn’t actually keeping the rings sealed.

After that, compression is back and oil stays golden. I use 1/8 of the MMO bottle for the next 2 changes at regular intervals. You need to flush over a longer time so oil+MMO

My dad had a '76 Chevy truck. When I was a kid in the 80s he had once poured transmission fluid down the carburetor while revving it a bit. Interesting peek under the valve cover. I have a 2006 Civic that I've owned since new that now has 305k km. It's been well maintained. I had the valve cover off at around 260k km for a valve adjustment. It was perfectly clean. It's still running strong. It just recently started showing signs of excess oil consumption. I'm switching to high mileage oil at the next change to see if that improves.

If it doesn't improve then I'll have to dig further. There doesn't appear to be an external leak, that's all I know at this point. @@speedkar99 transmission fluid has almost NO detergents. This is proven in oil analysis' The reason the inside of a transmission looks clean is because it's a closed system. There's no combustion and no blowby like an engine experiences. Saying transmission fluid has detergents is such an old myth and it needs to go away. We have access to all this information online with PROVABLE evidence.
@boots7859

@@speedkar99 ATF doesn't have any detergents actually. It also has very little lubricity. It also is not seal friendly. I'd consider using a 1/2 qt of diesel and 15 minutes idle before an oil change a couple times. Or something like Chemtool B12 which will actually dissolve sludge and clean.
@GainingDespair
@GainingDespair 2 года назад
Transmission fluid doesn't make a good flush these days. There was a point in time when transmission fluid had more detergents in it than motor oil. However that's not the case anymore, if anything it has less now. Transmissions don't see combustion, so the need for detergents in a sealed unit is basically non existent. It doesn't need them, even transmission fluid with 100k miles on it will not sludge up. Wear materials will build up over time and fall to the bottom of the pan. This can appear as sludge, but not from the oil. Metal shavings are just to heavy to stay in the oil, so it seperates.
@michaelquillen2679
@michaelquillen2679 4 года назад
Engine flushes, like the commercial stuff you find on the shelves or online and things like ATF are, in my opinion, shock treatments and could possibly do more harm than good. Of course, the use of high-quality engine oil (conventional or synthetic), along with regular oil changes is the key to preventing a gunked-up and/or sludged engine. These same high-quality engine oils can help clean the sludge/gunk build-up in an engine that has been neglected. However, if you want to boost the cleaning capabilities of that high-quality oil, you can use Marvels Mystery Oil (MMO) along with that oil. No more than 10-20% total in the crankcase and never go more than 3,000 miles on MMO without an oil change. MMO slowly and gently dissolves/liquifies that gunk. Years ago, I cleaned up a really bad, sludged-up Dodge 318 engine using MMO. Nowadays, with my current cars and truck, if I'm within 500-1000 miles of an oil change, I top off the oil to full with MMO, just to help out the engine oil in its cleaning ability. Pop off my valve covers and you will see nothing but that beautiful golden varnish color with no sludge or black spots. By the way, thanks to Speedkar99 for all the videos he has put out over the years that have helped me with my Toyotas! You da man!!!

@boots7859 Год назад
I like MMO and SeaFoam, however a lot of good knowledge on Bobistheoilguy forum explain a lot of the chemistry and make-up of both of those. Tldr; both are very, very light oil/volatiles that are burned up within minutes of engine reaching operating temperature. I use a real flush/solvent that doesn't just evaporate instantly, Chemtool B12 at 1/4-1/2 strength and idle for a while before an oil change. I'd rather have it take several oil changes to clean out slowly and not have the oil pickup get gunked up or passage blocked trying to do a quick hard max-flush. If someone is just trying to do preventive maint., then using a decent full synthetic oil change at 3000 miles intervals a couple of times seems to work pretty well with low risk for a lot of people.

I did an engine flush on my previous car (I think I used Nulon). It consumed oil at 1 litre per 1000 km and remained constant - mileage was 186,000 km. What did improve was the colour. Before it'd be black within a few weeks of an oil change but after the flush it was much the same colour as original, just a little darker. One downside was leaving the hood up with engine going for 15 minutes made the hinges weaken and it'd vibrate the hood if it was up with the engine running from that point on.

Way back when we tried flushing an engine that was so bad , it lost oil pressure after a minute of runtime because of the debris jamming the pickup. We flushed it ,but when we put oil back in it was about the same. I ended up pulling the pan(little v6gm) and scooped out enough hardened cakes in the corners of the pan to fill a half gallon ice cream container. Flush would have never loosened that up, and what the flush did loosen was blocking the pickup. Another thing you can do , for light sludge is mix up a few gallons of atf and mineral spirits/diesel and fill it to the top and let it set several days. Drain it down ,run it some and see what comes out.

Alright, so, i bought a 98 camry with the 2.2l engine about 6 months back and ive been fixing this car up to use as a work/beater car. After i bought the car i found oil on the engine air filter, which indicated blow by ususally. I changed the filter and when i checked it again a few hundred miles later it had some oil starting to get on it again. I bough an amsoil engine flush and followed the instructions and when i changed the oil i used synthetic 5w-30 with some marval mystery oil. After more than 1k miles the air filter has no oil getting on it anymore. I also replaced the intake tube and throttle body and there is no new oil on anything. Oil flushes can work if things arent too awefully bad. I was lucky i caught this engine in time before it was totally done in, but what happens with these toyotas often times in with infrequent oil changes the oil control rings get gummed up and stop working right and allow oil to slip right through. This 98 camry of mine was luckily saved for now, but change your oil people. I see too many toyota vehicles with evidence of extended oil changes, dont do that. 3-5k miles oil changes is the max for an oil change in most cases, the only real exception being pure highway driving.

Supertech at Walmart is a full synthetic made by Warren, though also rebanded Exxon and Pennzoil. Tons and tons of people and numerous Fleet reports have shown 7-8K is perfectly fine for most vehicles, even those like taxi and delivery fleets which are the real 'Hard Service' use cases. Not like the BS you hear from lube shops who talk up commuting and freeway miles as 'hard service, you gotta do 3K oil changes!!!!'... It only costs $35 to have Blackstone Labs do an oil analysis on your oil, which people here should consider next time they do an oil change. They can give you a scientific readout of the state of your oil after you x miles before oil change, and tell you how many more x thousand miles it should last before needing to be 'used up' and require changing. 6/7/8K is pretty average/low for full synthetics. Best part is, Walmart sells Supertech for about the same price as dino. Just bought 5q full synth. for $19 last week. $5-6 for supertech filter vs $7-8 for the Fram crapola too. vehiclefreak.com/who-makes-supertech-oil-for-walmart-and-is-it-any-good/

@@boots7859 Low-end synthetic oil is Group III and is refined from petroleum, not synthesized from natural gas. It costs barely more than semisynthetic because it is just highly refined and catalytically altered dino oil. Pure dino oil may not even exist anymore. All oil is semisynthetic to a degree these days because the carriers the additives come in are synthetic oil. I have the same engine the guy was speaking of, a 2.2 L Toyota 5SFE. I use semi and keep a 2800 miles oil change interval. I wouldn't want to go much longer on Supertech synthetic or any low-end synthetic. My driving is all trips of five miles or less. An oil analysis is more for entertainment than anything. Follow the charts, specs and the opinions of qualified sources. Some say don't go further than 7500 miles on any oil. One said 5000 miles. Cut that in half for severe duty. Maybe it's hard for some people to recognize that their many short trips constitute severe duty, but they do. A shorter oil change interval also means you don't need to buy those high-end or vanity products that advertise 15,000 and 25,000 mile oil change intervals. Or a special oil filter either, except as necessary to keep your warranty in effect.

I did 3qt of the oil it wanted, 1 full can of seafoam, 1.5qt ATF. Drove it a week and repeated. 4 times. The motor looks great and I use 1/2 can seafoam when I changed the oil and the other 1/2 a week before. 7 years and the mileage counted broke after a few k’s guessing it is close to 400k now.

ATF has very little shear strength so you ran your engine with much, much lower viscosity oil dilution. Basic research across the internet says for anyone still using this old ATF trick from the 60-70's when it was a different formulation that you let it idle for 20-30 min, not drive or goose the throttle. Hope that sludge removal was worth the shavings/wear.

Next time just use diesel fuel. You will have pretty good results. Don't rev the engine. Let it idling for about 15 minutes. If you would like to have a clean-like-new effect, then use DMSO. Don't use diesel fuel in place of engine oil in any modern engine. For another thing, you have to be able to store and dispose of the contaminated diesel fuel you are going to create. Most people will never encounter an engine that is so sludged that any extreme measures are necessary. Regular oil changes even with semisynthetic will clean an engine. The sludge is inert and doesn't do anything.

I had once bought a car from a scammer dealer who fitted the broken oil pan with a temporary plug. Original drain plug wouldn't work due to broken threads. After a research I discovered an oil drain valve which would fit perfectly without any leaks. I also bought a set of ramps, so I could service the car myself. I would buy the cheapest oil and replace every few thousand miles, so never had any issues with oil or engine.

May be my concern doesn't make any sense but I always wondered if the softened sludge can redeposit a resolidify in critical places like orifices, valves and such which were originally sludge free before the flush? I am not taking about large chunks of sludge breaking loose during the flush. I am talking about resludging a motor afterwards since some sludge remains and never comes out 100%.

It is possible. No clean is always effective. Do the best you can to buy you some time. Eventually the engine is gonna have to come apart and get rebuilt and cleaned.
@boots7859
@boots7859 Год назад
Sludge generally stays where it is, unless you have additional sludging occurring which grow at the existing sites because they have less velocity, and just break off, like a blood clot. Unless you know you have significant sluding, simply using a decent full synthetic, even Walmart's Supertech, and keeping to sane 5/6/7K oil changes will both clean and keep everything clean.
@anonymike8280
@anonymike8280 7 месяцев назад
@@boots7859 I say, accelerate the oil change interval but what you are saying will work. What I advise is that if conventional oil was original in the engine, use semisynthetic and keep a short oil change interval. Most people do all short trips driving as it is. I think engines which use synthetic oil develop a different type of sludge than occurs with conventional oil, something that is just a thick liquid. I go 2800 miles on semisynthetic in my vehicle. I rarely drive a trip longer than about five miles these days.
