Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

Aloha Jess, girl I live in Hawaii, the cost of FOOD is over the top expensive here, even growing food here is pretty costly. Bread can range from $6.00 to $10 a loaf , veggie per pound for lettuce can start at $2.99 lbs. I appreciate you, and your story. That said, people will talk no matter what you do. Just keep doing what you do. Also you're right 1) Food sold in the store isn't as healthy as home grown. 2) The meats are not grown from cared for animals. 3) You are also supporting your community with the food you share. So let people talk, those who know you KNOW YOU ❤. Just don't STOP believing in why you do what you do. Mahalo for sharing you've inspired me to be a gardener and dream my own dream.

Oh Jess, you’ve earned everything you have. No apologies or explanations are due anyone! You have a beautiful life and you have turned your dream into reality. What an incredible example you are of tenacity, faith, and devotion to your passion. I am trying to bring my own dream to life, building a (beautiful) sanctuary of healing for women who have experienced trauma. Beauty is God’s gift to humanity to help us deal with the ugliness of this world and is a worthy pursuit, especially when you share it others. I’m not there yet but I know the kind of work it takes to build a dream out of nothing…. you deserve to bask in your beautiful life…and never apologize or explain yourself to anyone in order to assuage their envy. ❤

Jess however, I have celebrated with her because of the person she is and how much I have gotten out of her wisdom and vision, for gardens and for life!! Even though I cannot currently do things on the scale that she can, I am shocked to see how much I have accomplished in five years by continuing to move forward.

I was just talking to my husband today about gardening being my peace in this chaotic world. You know what I see when I look at your 800 foot beautiful garden? I see someone who loves beautiful things and the beautiful things the land can supply with hard work and dedication. The way you love what you do is inspirational. And this is hard work, I don’t think people realize how hard growing a really large garden can be. And you do this to supply not only your family but your friends and community with organic and healthy food. I admire you, Jessica Sowards, and all that you do for your family and your community. Your authenticity will always be relatable to me and thousands of others who consider you a friend we met through RU-vid. Love you girlfriend!

Nina, you are so right! My garden is only a penny to Jess's dollar, but I spend plenty of time taking care of it--BECAUSE I LOVE IT! I LOVE being among my plants, and even come out each evening to say goodnight to it ! Food is an important part of it, but the enjoyment, happiness and peace that I receive, is boundless!

@@lyndaevans1132 I agree 100%! I try to save money where I can and the food is nice, but like you, it’s my hobby. I find so much joy and peace out in my garden. It’s truly what helped me through some of the hardest parts of my life- losing my baby sister and going through a divorce… my garden is what kept me sane. And it doesn’t matter how much money someone puts into it… if it helps feed their family and keeps them sane and grounded… it shouldn’t matter to anyone else what is going on in someone else’s yard.

Ok...I never comment twice but as your official reminder of your words Jess, I have to share them from your last garden tour in Arkansas. I think they perfectly express what you addressed here. "The thing that I've learned the most is that sometimes the very fulfillment of your dream turns out to just be a stepping stone into the next place. For so long I viewed living in town and waiting til I could garden on a large scale as my classroom and I desperately wanted to have this fulfillment and I got it! But I didn't realize til halfway through my time here that I was just in the next classroom. And THAT has made me such a bold dreamer. And bringing you into this garden has taught me the value of community and the value of sharing. This garden and my experience here...there's no way it would have been as amazing without you... you've taught me how to garden in so many ways. And I know fully that I wouldn't be launching into this next place as the woman and the gardener I am if it wasn't for you." Nuff said, y'all. Nuff said.

One point to make is that I would recommend that when putting a garden space together you should make it a place where you are going to want to spend a lot of time… so make it a place where you see beauty, find joy, want to sing in and bring that beauty and joy to your plants to your food to your soul. You have built your sanctuary that feeds your soul and your family. It’s a dream and we all need to continue to dream. And everybody’s dreams and sanctuary is going to be and look different. You keep being you, living the dream and making the content that you do❤give people ideas to dream about!

My garden brings me so much more fulfillment than a trip to the grocery store ever could. I love growing weird things and exposing people to them. It's brought me closer to my friends/neighbors and brings them as much joy as it does to me because they know they are free to come grocery shop whenever they want. My 93 year old widowed neighbor actually brings people over to my house to show them my gardens. I'm planning my 2024 garden around sharing it, the end that people can drive up to is going to have all the produce they usually want like a living grocery aisle. Growing in abundance to be able to bless my community is the best way I can spend my money and fills my heart with so much joy.

I thoroughly can relate and understand how awkward it can feel to go from scraping change from your purse to go to the store to get milk to achieving some comfort and stability and nice surroundings through hard work. I understand why you felt compelled to share your thoughts because of the person you are. But you didn’t have to. You dont have to justify yourself. I see you and I’m sure many others do as well. As someone who has been watching you for years, who made a radish bed out of a kiddie pool, who turned their front lawn in to raised garden beds, who had a table on their front lawn with free cauliflower, kale, jalapeno starts for my neighborhood to take - I would never associate the word excess with you. You have created abundance, which is a main point of gardening, and you have shared that with everyone! You share knowledge, passion, your personal life and I'm sure SO MUCH tangible food and flowers to your extended friends, family and community. You inspire people to put their hands in some dirt and make food or beautiful flowers. I am proud of your success, I am grateful that I get to watch you create your dream home, and it offers motivation for me to do the same.

That's what really gripes my butt. Is when someone feels the need to try and make someone feel bad about what they have. They don't realize it took hard work to earn that stuff, and it shouldn't be a topic of anyone else's conversation. I'm glad to see the success of others and to hear the stories behind what made ya'll. That's the book that needs to be published, not how others can't relate.

People underestimate the incredible worth of seeing your dream through. We are building our dream home ourselves. People think I'm crazy because it would be easier and quicker to pay someone else to do it. But the incredible value of seeing your dream happen can't be monetized. I may not be able to do the things you are doing in your garden now, but it sure does feed my dreams. I've been watching your videos for 6 years and have enjoyed seeing your garden and dreams grow. It shows that anyone can do it if they focus and work their dream and see difficulty as something to overcome, not something to bring you to a screeching halt.

People that have been here for a few years know how much time, sweat and literal tears you have put into your garden and this channel. BUT, you bring so much value to the gardening world by showing multiple aspects of the gardening world. By showing how to grow in a green stalk, a kiddie pool to the large scale. I just don’t get why some people feel the need to throw stones at others. Yes, you’ve been blessed to be able to build a garden I can only dream of, but you have worked very hard to get to this point. And the cool thing is, you use your blessings to bless others. I have learned a ton from you about gardening and tending to livestock. You provide an abundance of information freely on RU-vid, without keeping the best behind a paywall, and you’ve started a cooking channel to teach even more! I don’t need to be told what you’re worth. I know what you’re worth, and it’s way more than can be measured in dollars and cents! I pray that God will continue to bless you, and enable you to continue to bless others!

It's your REFUGE and I am here for it!! Most of us are 😂. I would love to have what you have, but heck a lot of my friends would love to have what I have. However making what you have work and making it your own is special!! It's something we can take pride in and say... I did this.... I grew that.. I love being at home, I feel peace when I am here, so does my family. My "expensive" dairy cow, well she is more than a cow, she is part of our family and we adore her. People pay way more for their expensive designer dog or horse. 🤷🏼‍♀️ If that makes them happy lol then so what. You keep being yourself we love you for it!! ❤❤

I love your greenhouse and garden, the beautiful way it's put together is uplifting, spiritual and artsy all in one. As far as buying groceries and milk at the store, apparently these people don't buy organic produce or A2 milk, because it's a budget breaker. I want a beautiful greenhouse. Fabulous raised beds, nice walk ways. And like you, I will work for them. If you are doing what you love, paying your bills on time and providing for your family all at the same time. I love watching your dreams play out … mainly because of your gratitude and honesty. The fact that you can afford to live how you live now, thrills me … to watch the epic journey of hard work, community support/sharing, faith and dedication gives me pause in how life should/could be lived. I wish I had your motivation. Things move so slow for me, but I can relate to what you do. So many times I wanted to message you especially when you were speaking of your illness, but I'm busy with my own garden and projects. The rare times that I actually sit down, I enjoy your videos. I started in a trailer park. Through hard work, many blessings, luck, and taking whatever opportunities that came we are worth millions. We finally realized we were not struggling when we figured out that we could afford both crunchy and creamy peanut butter at the grocery store. It truly was a surprise! There is a balancing act to stay humble, without bein almost ashamed. It is uncomfortable. People will call you "lucky" and you are. But, many had the same opportunities you had and did not try. Many had excuses and fears that stopped them. You were afraid and scared at one time too. Don't apologize. Just keep doing what you do best. Your failure would be to forget your past, become entitled and not reach down to help others up. Your success at business is every bit as inspirational as your ability to grow a tomato. Keep doing what you do, teach, help, inspire.

You are so appreciated! Now I can retire happily after 3 years of following you. I can plant seeds and have a happy, healthy, emotionally healthy life. Thank you so very much!

I have been watching for a little over 3 years now (time flies!), and while I have noticed your financial growth in what you're doing, I recognize the very hard work you and your family put into it. Also love that you can now provide jobs to people, plus the info and inspiration you provide to your viewers. My husband and I are preparing to build a window green house this spring all because of your beautiful one. It will be rewarding building it ourselves and working together. Thank you ❤

Oh my goodness, Jess...if anyone has been following you for any amount have time will see that you are certainly relatable. You have GROWN so much over the years! What could be more relatable than the human spirit that brick by brick, year by year, builds their dream. It wasn't handed to you - you dreamed about it, prayed for it, worked hard for it - you earned it! And you share it with us and it is SO INSPIRING!!❤❤❤

Jess. You have nothing to explain about your little luxuries. You earned anything you have. As far as what you do for others….during Covid you taught me how to garden and I will be forever thankful! When I started out I’ve used your trick of growing directly out of a soil bag and up-cycling a kiddie pool. Your ability to teach at an approachable common sense level is your talent and blessing you share. Just like you, I’ve dragged myself up from nothing to something in one lifetime. For me that something is having a home and garden. So just always remember that whatever blessings you have you openly share with the world. It’s your mission. No one else’s! Again thanks for sharing and inspiring so many of us!

We all need to keep in mind that you are not just building a garden. You are building your life. You have had to rebuild from moving halfway across the country. Also, you were beginning with raw land. There are things you are doing to help teach your audience that you normally might not do. You also host gatherings, not only for family, friends, and those you employ, but also viewers from time to time. Besides, we get to enjoy the beauty you create every time we tune in. It is a lot more work than many may realize. As you have said before, this is your job. When someone owns a bussiness, they usually must buy expensive equipment in order to make it successful. It's kind of the same thing. I feel very blessed that you share your life with us. Thank you.

It is perfectly evident why you do what you do! I am so thankful you have shared because it woke up the love for gardening in me. And..there are only three of us on our farm so my garden is definitely overspending compared to a grocery store. Maybe not though when you consider the prices of food now. a days. I overspend for some of the same reasons you do....winter makes me crazy to start ordering seeds and dreaming of what I want to start for spring! No apologies necessary. Most know and understand RU-vid monetizing and are happy you are keeping us fed with videos!

We get to watch, dream, and celebrate with you as we see your vision come to life. I’ve watched your channel for years. Quite sure there were cinderblocks in your garden when I found you. And you know it? I’m still not gardening! And I still want to! However, I have worked on and achieved some very big important goals in my life. Goals that I feel heart and soul connections to and are what I’m supposed to be doing. For me that is what your channel is about. Modeling and inspiring that way of living. A little while back, you talked in one of your videos about the process of your taking a thought or dream into a visualization, then into reality. And your connection with your spirituality in the process. To me those two things are what is most valuable about your channel. I can truly say that the effect you have had on my life and my family’s life is great. There is so much more going on here than comparing grocery budgets.

I prefer authenticity to relatability, because I don't need to see myself in anyone/everyone else. I have very much enjoyed watching your progress over the last few years without ever thinking "Oh, Jess is too different from me; I can't relate to her." Being able to appreciate and enjoy people who aren't like us is an unqualified good thing! As for the money issue: It is FANTASTIC that you've been able to prosper financially while living and sharing your dream life, doing so without hurting or exploiting anyone - in fact, sharing the wealth as much as you can with your friends and community - it's awesome and admirable.

I think some people forget this is your home, your future, your legacy, you're not just doing this to grow some food, but to have a beautiful home and yard to live in, and raise your children, for years to come. You can't tell me people wouldn't spend money on home and garden improvements if they had the money to do so. Ridiculous to even question any of the upgrades you guys are making to your own property. Apart from that, many of your subscribers know the journey you've been on to get where you are now and we're super happy that you are finally getting to live your dream life after all the time and hard work you've put in. We also know about your faith and how you waited patiently for the right time to move forward. We know about the seasons of longing and the seasons of abundance. And we are glad to get to walk through all those seasons with you. I'll never be able to live the life you do, for health/disability reasons, but I love that you get to do it and are willing to share it with us. I've learned so much and can't wait to have my little balcony garden so I can put it all into practice. It's definitely better than watching TV, I never put that thing on! Thank you, Sowards family, for being honest and authentic, always. 🙏🥰

Jess, I learned something about abundance a few weeks ago... Your abundance lies in how to spread it to others. Think of all the jobs that you have created, all the lives you have changed, all the information, grace, and gratitude you have spread. You can't pour from an empty cup. But once your cup was filled, you chose to fill others cups as well. That is an amazing quality in a person, and I am very impressed by your humbling and passionate soul. God put you in this place for a reason. You are relatable because you have experienced both the lack and abundance.

It is weird people discussing your finances, but ain't it just the times: people think they own everything they see. But I will say, they just don't see the value of having you as a resource. Your video from way back when about winter greens in a Tupperware blew my mind. It set me on a path to have a container garden almost all made out of plastic totes and found or reused plastic at my house. Brilliant. I don't care what you make monetarily; your ideas help spark ideas for me, which help change my life for the better. Seriously, bless you.

Growing my own food is the most satisfying, comforting, and healthy thing I have ever done. I don't think you can put a dollar value on that. Just so you know, your channel has inspired me for years to do the things that I can do within the framework that I have. For that I am eternally grateful. Lifted me from my depression into a passion for growing that I see inspiring my friends and neighbors. Getting better mental and physical health, and great veggies too! Jess, I've been watching you from the beginning and let me just say don't let people's comments get to you in a negative way at all. Truth be told, I know that it kind of pricks your heart when people aren't exactly kind or even supportive with their words. Like I said, I've seen what you've shared of your path so far and I'm so blessed by what the Lord is doing in y'all's lives BECAUSE of the hard work and the ingenuity that you and Miah have cleverly put in motion! I see your greenhouse, the pathways, the patios, the new house, the land etc. etc. etc. that you've been working on as part of your home. Those places and structures are WHERE you grow your food and animals. Those things aren't necessary for the production of the food, but are part of your dream home on earth. We all come from different situations and some of us can do more of that stuff than others, but having come from humble beginnings makes it all so special and makes you so thankful. We all should be thankful for what we can do. God gave us a strong will to make plans and goals. I started watching you after moving to a new home where I finally had a place after fifty years on earth to actually have a larger garden and build my passion of growing flowers further. I can't tell you how much you've helped me through the years organize, plan and make things happen! I know I share with so many others that follow you a love for your family, I share a love for Jesus and I'm so blessed by you. I still watch your talks in your garden from the very beginning when I have time. You've helped me so much find peace in a very hectic, troublesome world. Thank you for being YOU and never change!! God's continued abundant blessings on all of you and every single endevour you make!
