Does the Run Out Groove really audiophile? In this video, I put the label to the test. How do their pressings stack up against others or original pressings. We'll find out.

Thanks for the information. Perhaps the MoFi debacle will influence record companies to provide the "chain of custody" information. I have quite a few ROG titles, including all three Morphines, the gorgeous Bill Frisell, and the most recent Mingus, Randy Newman and Curtis Mayfield, and find them quite nice in packaging, extras, and sound quality. I got the LITA "Cure for Pain" as soon as it came out and was quite taken with it, albeit a bit on the soft side and had to turn my amp up to two o'clock for an acceptable sound level -- ARC tube electronics and Magneplanar screens. I, too, do not generally care for United (my favs: QRP, RTI, Pallas, in that order), but overall was, and still am, pleased. It is my understanding that the album was recorded via DAT and ROG got the original tape -- it makes sense that if Warners owns both Ryko and ROG, ROG could get that tape. All that said, as you indicated it is way good. Caveat, while I know that the number of LPs pressed is based on the number of pre-orders, I will no longer purchase their LPs directly from them -- it took some nine months or so to get the Newman and Mayfield titles. Time is not so much my complaint as it is they have had my $$$$ all that time. I don't mind waiting, I just don't want to have to pay for that waiting.

Love ROG! Huge difference in the Mingus. Least difference in the Dusty and Type O. Really liked the way ROG did Morphine, and I have OG and RPG Monkees (original purchaser of both) and for I agree that Kevin Gray made that tape sing. Better separation between the instruments without ruining the presentation, and the bass doesn't try to dominate but it's there. Another awesome vid.

@BarakaPDub Год назад
Thanks Bill. I totally agree with you on the Type O. Those two were the closest to me in comparison. I didn't look but I am betting the album was recorded digitally to begin with anyway and so there was minimal changes, if any, during the mastering. I am with you completely on the Monkees. It just goes to show, there are occasions where the reissue can out do an original to some listener's ears.

I really like the idea of these shoot outs combined with your bringing other, less well known labels to wider attention. But I do wonder if the effects of RU-vid compression, perhaps combined system effects limit their impact. For instance, in the Dusty Springfield comparison the AP version sounds rolled off in the treble (dull sounding), and the other two sound more balanced. Also, the Run out Groove version sounds a couple of db louder. As I say, this is how it sounds on my system. Sure that it will vary for others. Interesting what you and others say about 4 Men. I bought a few in the 2000s - Dusty and a couple of Aretha titles. These all sound pretty good to me. Glad that I missed the awful releases you and others experienced. Interesting question is, why these varied so much.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub Год назад
So I should have mentioned it in the video but ROGs issues were cut 4 db quieter that the rest and I tried to level match as best as I could to make them all equal sounding. You've been lucky with 4MWBs. I did an Iggy Pop shoot out early on when I started my channel and that's an example of how bad their reissues can be. It didn't help that they used Rainbo as a pressing plant for a lot of their reissues.

Hey Paul! Another great roundup of shootouts, heres my thoughts. The Monkees was interesting because the original almost sounded modernly done in terms of staging, every performance quite up front and clear, the only fault is the slight harshness and lack of low end. The reissue was more pleasant this was but staged less aggressively and weirdly tall on the left channel, still I think I prefer it. Dusty was even more interesting. As you said 4Men finally did something decent, but I think especially on the second track that the differences show. A bit thin and hollow compared to the other two. But the ROG might even be preferable here as it seems to bring out the panned instruments a little more like the harp or whatever it is on the right, which I liked. I did feel like I had to adjust the loudness a little to make it completely even but if they are completely matched to begin with then I feel even more strong about my assessment. Morphine was a pretty clear and cut deal, the reissue just has more life to it, bottom and top end wise. On Mingus the reissue pops more for sure, some definite highlighting going on and I think I like that here. Type O I also preferred the ROG. More ambiance by boosting those backing vocals and adding a splash of reverb which Im a sucker for.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub Год назад
Hello Leon. Your thoughts and detailed notes match mine completely now. Even with the Dusty upon a more detailed listen again. I think the ROG version may end up being my play copy of that one. I just felt the ROG had a more pleasing and detailed sound overall. It's really not bad considering all of these were likely digitally sourced records and you're stacking that against album that should be all analog.

I had the Funhouse CD set and it is really too much - you did the right thing. I was surprised at how similar Run Out Groove was on The Monkees - the original always sounded thin to me, and they subtly thickened it while still sounding true. Dusty - 4MWB wasn't awful, AP was great, Run Out actually was a touch loud/overdriven but without the sibilance 4MWB had (so, Run out is ranked 3rd). Morphine - same thing, Run Out seemed goosed in midrange/louder; LITA was better. Mingus - same issue, tweaked in midrange for Run Out.

Anymore, I am shying away from the uber deluxe sets with all of the bonus material. At the end of the day, you're just going to go back to listening to the original mixes. The out takes are rarely going to be put on repeat. The 15 LP set would be fun to listen to once but that's likely how much I would play the damn thing. What I forgot to mention during this video was the ROG, regardless of mastering engineer, were all cut 2 to 4 dB quieter than the others. That had to be something that WEA requested. Hey, Paul. So glad to see you’re covering ROG. I’ve got about 7 - 8 of their tittles including all 3 of the Morphine titles they put out. They’re one of those bands I’m a completist with, and have originals and reissues of. Being from their hometown of Boston, I was fortunate to have seen them many times before the untimely passing of Mark Sandman. The ROG pressings beat out all other pressings of “Cure for Pain” and “Good”, imo. Also love that ROG Stooges, Ministry’s, “Greatest Fits”, and a couple others I’m forgetting. The ROG pressings I’ve got are my go to records. They generally seem to have a bit fuller, punchy, and clearer presentation without being fatiguing. They also seem to have a better soundstage and separation. Thanks for covering this fantastic label, Paul.

@@BarakaPDub Yeah, Ministry’s catalog kinda runs the gambit of genres throughout their career, but the Greatest Fits is definitely a great overview. If you like Morphine, I think you’d dig Mark and Dana’s band before that, Treat Her Right. They’re fantastic. Also, the members of Morphine have carried on and still play under the name, Vapors of Morphine. I think you’d really like both bands. I did a couple studio sessions with Dana from Morphine, and he played on one of my old band’s albums. The Boston music scene, as most music scenes, is pretty incestuous. Thanks again, Paul. I really like this series.
@brokewithaudiophiletaste6076
The only 4 Men With Beards I ever had was their reissue of Television's 1990 s/t LP, which I also bought right after getting back into vinyl and I didn't know anything about them. It sounded like a CD to me. I soon learned of their bad reputation and have steered clear ever since. I saw Type O Negative live in Peoria in ~1995. They were ok. I was right at the end of my teenage metal phase and got into punk probably only weeks later. I thought the vocal harmonies popped out quite a bit more on the ROG pressing. For the Mingus, I liked the ride cymbal a lot more on the original. I think Jeff Powell does great with what he gets to work with, but like for anyone, the limiting factor will be the source that he has access to. He can now cut from tape, but he cut only from digital for years and there's huge potential variation in quality possible there. This was good, though, I'd only recently started hearing about this label via the In Groove new release videos and sounded like they often do good stuff. I'm actually kind of curious about that Deicide box set because I loved their first two albums when I was in highschool. But like you talked about with Fun House, especially now in middle age I don't love them enough to get some big box set. Speaking of Fun House, Ron McMaster cut the 2010 Rhino reissue of that from the original masters according to the hype sticker and it does sound as good as I've ever heard it.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub Год назад
Thanks so much for putting in your thoughts. The Run Out Groove has never claimed original tapes on any of their hype stickers so that just spells digital to me. Not that I think digital is a bad thing and I do agree with your comment on the source material. Sure, it might sound better if Jeff had the original tapes to work with and it would be nice if he did get some tapes to work with. I have the same Fun House pressing as you do and I do like it. I do think Ron's work is overlooked which is a bit of a shame. I really think he ranks up there with the best of them. As a matter of fact, I get to touch on one of his works in the next episode of this series. So cool you got to catch Type O live. Their output was a bit of a mixed bag for me but I will always have a soft spot for Bloody Kisses.

Alright, let's get into it ... (Monkees) - at least with the compression of RU-vid, there was virtually no difference at all. (Dusty) - The 4 Men and the AP were virtually identical... the Run Out Groove killed it! Their copy was fantastic (for a remaster). I own an original issue/1st British press that sounds amazing. (Morph) - I don't know about calling Morphine 'Punk' but nevertheless the Run Out Groove was noticeably more dynamic hands down. (Mingus) - while the Run Out Groove is again, noticeably more dynamic, the original sounds much more organic and I would gravitate to that for a live Jazz performance. (Type O Neg) - MOV version had noticeably more separation; the ROG wasn't too far off but still not as good as the MOV. Coincidentally I HATE Type O's version of Summer Breeze with a passion, but I love Seals and Crofts... LOL ahh well. Haha. Cheers!! - TONE

I really want that Deicide boxset that's coming out from ROG but I'm pretty sure I'm going straight to hell if I do...

I unfortunately bought that 4 men LP of Dusty. Horrible! hated it soon as I dropped the needle. Never bought another 4 men title again. The AP is still the one to have.

You were smart to steer clear of them. When I started getting back into vinyl I bought a few of their pressings but when I did a compare of Iggy Pop's Lust for Life and hated the sound, that's when I got wise to them. Thanks for watching Ed.

For the record (no pun intended)" Pinche Bolillo" is Peen- chay Vo- lee- yo. Technically it's a " F*$&#+* white bread roll" but it's derogatory remark for white dude. 😂 Yeah , believe me.... I am NOT a fan boy of 4Men w/ beards / Plain but it in all honesty I didn't hear much difference between it and the AP for the Dusty in Memphis selection. I'm sure there's got to be in person , but over the headphones on my phone. Nada. The ROG sounded a bit hotter or louder. I have some 4 men presses, like you, obtained before I knew better. However, I don't think any of them are terrible. Maybe I am lucky? In some cases I do have an OG, ( Eno & Cluster on Sky) . Or I have a legit reissue (Milton Nascimento's Clube Da Esquina on Polydor) For both of these titles I thought the difference would be so glaring I'd gladly give up the 4 Men's, but to my surprise in both cases they weren't and in fact the 4 Men's was worth holding on to because the mix was different, but interesting enough to keep. I've got a Plain recordings version of MBV Loveless and the new Deluxe AAA cut that came out last year. Once again I figured night and day, right? Nope. There is more detail to the AAA especially in the ambient vignettes between the tracks, but the Plain has way more visceral punch! Side note: Record Industry plant does phenomenal work when NOT related to MOV . If I am ever able to acquire upgrades to my Music on Vinyl copies, I am going to gladly drop those. I think they're the worst of all!

That's exactly why he chose the name by the way ;) thanks for the comment Rainbow Heart. I have the 4MWB pressings of Iggy Pop's Lust for Life and Maggot Brain by Funkadelic. Both were down right terrible. With the former I did a sound compare early on RU-vid and the differences were quite stark. After that sound compare, I have shied away from the brand completely. Are they even still making records now?

@@BarakaPDub Thanks for the reply! I will definitely go back and check out that video. I don't think that 4men is still active. Those reissues were all over the place 12 years ago, nowadays almost non-existent. Some of them go for a chunk of change on the secondary mkt. Go fig. Currently in the middle of watching the Pinche Bolillo/ KPG interview.... Great questions you supplied!

ROG on Monkees for me, not so trebley sounding......see? Don’t know who cut it!!!! That makes me nervous! Why? Price price price... Dusty- AP rich and full of depth but then hmmmm ROG hmmm I go past the vocals and boy ROG instruments sound great....thank you Paul hope you and the family are well- Lis 😎🙏🏻✨ and a ROG on Mingus for my ear

Thanks Lis. I think if your cutting lacquer and want to make a name for yourself, you really should be putting your name in the deadwax. Even though the ROG are all likely digitally sourced, I think they sound great to my ears and I will continue to buy them.

wow.. its amazing, how good the ROG pressing of dusty is.. the first round, i even liked the ROG better, than the AP 45!! it has more of that OG midrange magic and very good bottom end.. but of course, the highs and details on the AP are better... in the end, i would not know how to decide.. well except availability here in europe 😜 the mingus ROG is really terrible to my ears.. nah.. i just dont like it.. for the rest, ROG wins! thanks for another very interesting video!

Hello ToenS. So I had to go back and listen to the Dusty again. My opinion has changed and I think the ROG will now by my go to copy for this particular record. I just feel like the mix was a little more balanced. No problem on the Mingus ;) It just goes to show everyone is going to have a different sound preference.

I love the sound of my Run Out Groove Powell cut of Randy Newman’s Good Old Boys. I feel it has a bit more detail and “air” than the chunky, warm 2017 Bellman cut, though both are great. Very interesting bonus tracks too.

To me this was just proof of how much good Jeff can do and I think he's really under appreciated. Although, he's likely working with digital sources on all of these, I think he's done great with what he has to work with. Thanks for watching A Brick Walled CD.

Run Out Groove is doing an amazing job. I ordered Superfly early enough to get the color vinyl and also ordered a second black copy. I'm not gay, but if Kevin Gray asked me to I'd give it a try.

Dusty in Memphis. 4 Men With Beards sounds awful against AP and UK Philips original. Not even close. Much larger difference than RU-vid digital samples show.

I would love to hear a UK original of that one. I saw a US original for $50 a couple of years back and I am kicking myself for not buying it at the time.
