I just played a Sterling Meriposa at a local Guitar Center and I can't say how amazed I was. Those guitars are f'in awesome. And they look so cool. Sometimes you almost prefer the "low end" sound. Depending on your style. It has so much character, and can easily be modded if you want to swap pick ups. For only 400-600 USD it's a steal. I need one ASAP

I can't even tell the difference blind tbh. Bet in a mix, it's even tougher. I'm no sonic sommelier, but then again neither are most people. So why spend the extra $2500? If you're loaded, sure, no reason not to. But it's not gonna make you a better player. Your chops are what really matter.

I have the Sterling in dorado green. I got a really good price on it and with the money I saved I got the laser etched pick guard from MM. I’m satisfied and saved a ton of money.

I've wanted one since they were announced and especially since the sterling model was announced. Omar is probably my favorite guitarist most days. Thank you for comparing them I've been waiting for someone who speaks English to do so. I think a French guy did but I was mostly lost.

I don't understand how these guitar makers justify these prices but then don't deliver the value. You can still get some amazing, good quality, vintage Japanese guitars that do much more for under $1k.

The body shape is rad as are the block inlays, I feels the headstock jars with the angular body though. Something akin to a firebird headstock would be uber cool😎 . I like the way the Stirling sounds

Yes! I made a very similar body on a custom build about 2 years ago and my headstock was very different. Cavity covers were matching grain mahogany and flush mounted

The pickups in these are nicely in the PAF output territory. They also have 4-conductor leads. I removed the two volume pots and replaced them with a CTS 500k pot in the volume and a 500k push-pull pot in the tone and wired the unused jumpered leads to have the single coil option. Added Gibson black/silver reflector knobs which look better than the stock chrome knobs. I also swapped out the 5 really cheap neck screws (which felt like the heads were going to break off)with some stainless ones that actually tighten the neck to the body much more firmly.. Also, the truss rod in this one works perfectly. Replaced the tremolo springs. And as a personal preference, I finished the back of the neck with several coats of gunstock oil. Now it's slightly thicker and stays clean. Possibly the best $400 spent on a new guitar. With less than $25 in mods this guitar is an absolute winner.

I like the shape and the Sterling sounds okay....ish. There is lots of competition in the price range however. I would not pay 4K for the Music man though.

if you get a chance you should get hold of a sterling axis you'll be amazed they don't make the silhouette special anymore that was a great guitar i had 2 of the musicman ones wish i never had to get rid of them

75$ for a pickgaurd and 200$ for Schaller locking tuners doesn't make a guitar 3 grand. I'm really looking to buy this guitar just because of the shape, neck inlays are unique to my tastes regardless of any upgrades I may do if any. Would have been nice if you opened up the guitar to reveal exactly what electronics are in each. That's the true way to know. My epiphone has the real deal for 100 less than that. CTS pots 500k, a quarter inch top, neck through, the pickups are alnico V's with coil splitting and treble bleed. The tone knobs are so good it's the first guitar I've actually desired to use that function. I've been battling between this and the epiphone explorer in olive drab green. The epiphone has full size pots and good pickups off the bat though, wound like Gibson 57's but with an alnico V's instead of I want to say II's

I really like that Music Man and Sterling are experimenting with their shapes and not just variations on the always same theme. Polarizing for sure, but very individual. Although I like St Vincent shape better.

I agree..I just got one and the action is a bit high for me. (although I like super low action) I have lowered all the saddles almost all the way down and I would still like it lower than that. I guess I'm just out of luck there. Besides that I like the guitar.

Heh, I bet 300 in upgrades would get it very close to the original, and still be 3k cheaper. Not sure I am up for that, but.. it's a great shape. So many ugly new shapes that it is good to see a good one. Also, big question is more, is the trem decent? Doesn't have to be the original if it is fine. If it dodgy that is another matter.

Great review Henning, as always! As a consumer I am really blown away by the price to feature set on the Sterling brand. The one thing that bothers me most is the bridges, I’ve been able to upgrade the bridges on almost any other guitar and that was something I loved as a beginner to professional. If Sterling made a cheaper similar design to Ernie ball that I could switch out later for the real thing, I would probably have multiple Sterling guitars. The pickups, tuners, electronics can always be upgraded making these still a lower price option yet giving the feel and quality of the higher while doing the mods myself or a tech. The bridge however is a totally different shape, pocket and it really throws me off, just my 3 cents. Cheers!

I'm coming in a year late to this question, but for what it's worth, I just bought one of these and the one at my local L&M also had an almost-seized truss rod. It wasn't totally seized, the tech was able to adjust it with a screwdriver-length wrench and a liberal application of leverage... but definitely, she's a 'two-hander'. So I had them call around and ask some other locations to bring a different one over... more than one location responded saying they wouldn't recommend buying the one they had in stock because of a "neck issue". One location said theirs was great, and I'm currently waiting on it to transfer over so I can check it out. No idea yet if it'll also have a stiff truss rod. Now, I cannot be sure, but I do wonder if it has anything to do with the neck being roasted maple? Maybe it just doesn't like to move as easily as another wood might? Or maybe there was just a bad batch of these guitars, and the truss rods are stiff because they had some kind of defect? I have no clue. But I am not convinced that it was just his particular guitar that has a truss rod issue. I do think it was an issue with at least a few of these.

For what it costs and for how it sounds and look i would gladly replace the nut and put and change a volume knob for a tone one (kinda ruins the idea of the guitar, but i want a tone knob)

I don’t know if they’ve done some reworks, but I’ve seen a lot of comments about the action. I just bought one not too long ago, and it came with low action. Like, perfectly low action. Truss rod ajusts with no issue, and the pickups sound AMAZING for a guitar in this price range. Mind you the prices have come down. I bought mine for just under $600 honestly, If I had all the money in the world, I wouldn’t buy the music man, and keep the sterling. Not enough difference to justify the price difference. And even without the differences, the music man isn’t worth the price IMO.

The EBMM is crazy expensive, yes, but for me it's a significantly better guitar than the Sterling (worth the price? Probably not.). Just buttery in the hands and, the pick-ups are very good if you can find someone doing a good, eclectic demo. Cleans up well when needed and can bring the wall when needed. But ya.... that price tag. Of course, in 2022 the prices are even more outrageous...over $3k USD.

I own both: Sterling body is much thicker and feels heavier (1 pound difference), neck is more chunky on sterling, sterling has rosewood fingerboard, EBMM has a much nicer ebony fingerboard and a thinner neck and feels much much more comfortable. Tonally the sterling doesn't compare.Trem feels cheap on the Sterling. The trem bar is thin and cheap on the sterling. The EBMM has a solid steel bar and is much smoother. EBMM holds tuning much better. Side note: Sterlings have much thicker necks than their USA counterpart - true on all their models.

I got a chance to try the BFR version today, as well as the BFR valentine. Both were very nice, but I found the neck on the Valentine to be a bit thicker, and the Mariposa was a bit too narrow but nothing I couldn't work with. I'm going to buy one of them this week and trying to decide. Overall the Mariposa felt better, and was $600cad less. How did you find the neck width compared to other guitars?

I bought the sterling mariposa and really like it, but I haven't played a legit Musicman version. However, by comparison, I would NEVER buy the Sterling John Petrucci model. I used to own the real thing, and not only do they still price higher than a sterling Mariposa, but they somehow feel cheaper quality wise. Gone is the finesse of an original MM JP.

Not really a fan of the shape tbh, but the sounds are there! Would be interesting to see how they compare to the more expensive Harley Benton’s, especially the ones with the roasted maple necks. While at the topic: are you going to review the fusion 3 line?

Hab gestern meine Harley Benton SC-DLX bekommen - meilenweit besser als SC-550 II ! Die SC-550 II die ich bekommen hatte ein deutlich schlechteres Preis/Leistungsverhältnis als jede Squier! Das Problem mit dem zu dünnen und minderwertigen Sattel bei der SC 550 II scheint ja doch viele zu betreffen, bei meiner waren dazu noch die Saitenkerben in der Brücke verhauen - die mittleren Saiten waren tiefer! Das Flame Furnier usw. sahen ganzschön künstlich aus und insgesamt wirkte sie wie Hauptsache sie sieht aus der ferne und auf Fotos gut aus - aber nichts dahinter. Die neuen SC-DLX scheinen das ganze Gegenteil zu sein - für etwas mehr Geld (was ich aber jedem empfehle es zusätzlich auszugeben!!!) bekommt man eine Gitarre die sich kompromisslos in der Hand/beim Spielen anfühlt wie eine PRS SE! Die Farben sind schlicht, aber man konzentriert sich auf das wesentliche und das wirklich wichtige! Die Hardware ist der Hammer! Hätte ich die SC-550 II selbst durch Mods in Ordnung bringen wollen hätte ich mit neuem Sattel, Brücke und Tunern allein schon deutlich mehr nachgezahlt als jetzt der Aufpreis zur SC-DLX! Ich bin Locking oder Vintage-Slot Tuner gewöhnt, doch die Gotoh Tuner sind sooo extrem präzise und spielfrei, das ist irre, da werde ich wohl nichts austauschen. Ich kann jedem der ne Harley Benton Singlecut kaufen will nur wärmstens empfehlen die neue SC-DLX zu nehmen und nicht die SC-550 II ! Und dir kann ich natürlich nur empfehlen die neue oder beide SCs zu reviewen. Doch würde es mich nicht wundern wenn die dir ne bessere SC-550 II raus suchen! ;)

I bought the 2019 Sterling Majesty (Red). It was a bag of trash so, I returned it for another one. Got another turd. Returned it and got a refund. Fast forward to 2020. They released the Sterling Majesty X. Upgraded pups, SS Frets, Ebony fretboard, and $1400 price tag. Was worth it. It's my fav guitar now.

First of all, it's a review, not a demo! it says it RIGHT IN THE TITLE... Secondly... do you know how RU-vid works? It is a non-linear format... you can fast forward and skip ANY time... there should even be chapter marks... Sorry Lawrence, but this is a dumb comment... please think about it. So you have someone chewing your food for you as well? IF I just play people comment and complain because they want to hear my opinion... so WHAT am I supposed to do. AND... check your sentence.. there are words missing... if you feel you need to critique the hard work of a content creator, please be respectful enough to actually check what you wrote and make sure it is actual english.
