Does It Take A Genius To Play 3D Chess? We Asked The Masters (HBO)

Donald Trump supporters taut his ability to see moves ahead of his political adversaries. Even after some of his more baffling policy decisions or tweets, they claim Trump is playing 3D Chess, making moves massively more complicated and clever than normal people can comprehend. Most people have never sat down to play a game of 3D chess, and probably only know of the game from a brief scene in a 1976 episode of Star Trek, where Kirk and Spock play it on futuristic glass board on the enterprise.
In order to fully unpack the metaphor, VICE News spoke with 3D Chess experts to find out what the game actually is, and if Trump would be any good at it.

I had watch another video , that tries to explain. I didn't understand much , but the gist is that: every piece had an "up" move , because of hos some goes diagonal , horizontal , vertical and whatnot , you keep track to the proper "up" by the color-scheme of the board. For example: a bishop goes vertical in chess , but they always walks at the same color-schemed sqare on the floor , so if your bishop walks into black squares , his up will remain in a black square , so , board one would be an "X" move and Board 2 would be a inicial "+" and resume with "X" afterwards. Even if it's 3D , it retains the same board proportions from a 2D Chess.

This isn’t real 3D chess. It’s a show prop with half efforted rules and mainly plays by TOS fans. The real variant most played is Millennium 3D chess followed by Parallel Worlds Chess. Both of which are actually fun and playable.

Well, the release of 3 US citizens imprisoned in North Korea, one of whom was imprisoned during the term of the previous president (who did nothing to have him released), seems to be a good indicator to the ability that President Trump has in negotiating. And given that there is a set date to meet Kim Jong Un in Singapore on June 12th, means that he's accomplished something that not a single president since the Korean War has done.....

This is sort of a neat idea. I feel it could be further developed by maybe adding a skilltree that the pieces could progress through by performing moves and getting experiencepoints across games. "My rook takes your bishop. You don't see it do you? It's because it has a phase-changer and can appear anywhere on the board once a game. And I haven't used that ability yet. Wham. Your turn."

That's because they edited it like crazy. I actually won the game against him (I'm the Hawaiian shirted guy, his cousin) behind the scenes the chess board was falling apart and we were scrambling to keep it together until the shoot was over. It was glass and hot glue and rushed together for this shoot. I had a couple of cameras set up out of view from the film makers in-between books or in corners of the room. the raw footage is even funnier. Sadly he passed away on Dec 9th 2023 from a heart attack.

As someone who plays strato chess, it does not take a genius. It's just regular chess with extra steps. It's also a pain to get a checkmate (king has up to 18 possible moves assuming it's on the center plane with 8 in the center, 5 going up, or 5 going down.

This guy didn't invent 3D chess. He just made the rules for the existing visual display that was made before any rules were decided on. A brief wikipedia read shows that 3D chess was already a thing, and a fictional variant of this was made for star trek. He doesn't seem to mention any of that. A chess variant in itself will always offer new challenges, and the expression '3d/Xd chess' is just saying that they're thinking outside the box, and/or playing the game at a level that is not entirely obvious. Also, as a counterpoint, you pull out two dudes who are just having fun, though maybe a little arrogant in their view of their own intelligence, and no one ever actually explains what is or isn't more or less complex about 3D chess, or anything about how it works. As a layman consumer, this is feels like poor journalism.

A search for "3D Chess" yielded "about 542,000 results". I'm sure most of those don't mention him. This one mentions him for a reason, and that's what the video is partly about. If the descriptions of him bug you, you have thousands of other videos to peruse.

Hahaha, my dad has the 3d chess set from star trek, dont get me wrong, love the show and personally love how the set looks, but its easy, especially since you can see from top to bottom, if you just happen to be tall enough, you can look from the top down and play like its a normal board. There is no restriction on the movement of pieces between levels, the game can be learned in a matter of minutes. It took me 15 years to become good enough at chess to beat my dad, it took me 1 hour to beat him at 3d chess

I play video games, and also do other things which are usually deemed "worthwhile". I study quantom mechanics and read the classics on my downtime. Being a geneisus, I find it difficult to rest. Video games are a good way to unwind and you by no means have to be stupid to get a deep satisfaction from controlling digital pixle clusters.
