Jamaica had Billy Fontaine’s soca/calypso during the 60’s and 70’s before the rise of Reggae. It wasn’t until Reggae n Ska hit the scene in JA that soca took a backseat in Jamaica. I loved this interview,we Caribbean people need to govern our own thing and stop look to The US to help market we

😅It’s not that The Fix don’t remember how popular Calypso was, most young people simply do not know. Back then people sing and dance to sweet music. Jamaicans had no prejudice to music. Every music has their highest era (usually among the young) when a new sound emerges young people gravitate towards it, makes it popular - Older people don’t bother to tell their children how popular the older genre was. Even if they do,the new sound is more appealing … I remember when I used to wait for Calypso Corner on radio in Jamaica each morning. I had to hear those Calypso songs in the mornings before mi run to school. Until this day Calypso and Ska are my favourite music. Of course, I appreciate some of the great individual talents from different genres and different eras eg; Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Alton Ellis Sparrow, Gregory Isaacs, Arrow, The great Whitney❤️ Super Cat, Koffee. For some reason, we can’t embrace the best of all music, we feel the need to treat music especially in the region as competition. Just embrace the region’s music as part of our Black/Caribbean culture😅

Byron Lee popularised soca in JA he got some hits dat is timeless, even other soca artists can't contest also he had a part to play with the influence of pioneering rock steady to reggae, I believe his link is wit Lynn Taitt wen he gave Mr.Taitt assistant wen Mr.Taitt was left with no money in JA by his bandmates , I think a group by d name of fab 5 hav from JA did some timeless soca songs too " every woman deserves a good buddy" is one of dem. Mr. Lynn Taitt a Trinidadian from South Trinidad (San Fernando) who never got any credit as an innovator for rock steady, even tho Mr. Alton Ellis was crowned d Godfada of rock steady.

Am I the only Caribbean person who doesn't care whether or not Soca makes it big in international markets or not? Like we know Soca is amazing it doesn't need the approval of America or Europe to verify it's quality. And sadly we have seen with other genres, Once foreign have a hold on it they try to transform it into something that is unrecognizable from its roots. So leave our soca alone please and thanks.

Trinidad artists use to go Jamaica back in the days cause they had d biggest studio. 1 day while some Trini artist was in the studio in JA, d current (electric) gone. When it come back, d calypso song that was playing was slow. And d JA man liked it. And so that's how Reggae was found. It's just Calypso slow down. 😂 =)

As a trini I could say for sure that you’re trolling, and you know better than that. Reggae was not influenced by calypso, reggae was mainly influenced by old R&B and old rock and roll with musicians like chuck berry and fats domino which heavily influenced scaar, which begat rock steady, which begat reggae and so on, but nice try though trolley.

@anthonyblackman7669 you don't know what the hell you are talking about. Calypso played an integral part in the build up of reggae . I know... my family owned a recording studio in Clarendon Jamaica. Many calypso artists would visit my uncle's studio to cut tracks. Calypso is made up many genres. Get your facts str8 buddy. This is also backed by interviews from Byron Lee and the dragonaires.

The problem I have with most Caribbean and Central American Carnival is it steals Trinidad and Tobago artistic and cultural genius. From the names of the fetes, event names, folk characters e.g "Jouvert" and "Dimanche Gras" on the beach really???? It's disgusting! Every other culture protects and safe guards the authenticity of their culture. This we ting I'm not with it.
