In this sound comparison we set out to discover the exact sound difference the resonant head tuning makes to the overall kick sound! For this test we will be using a low tuned batter head with minimal dampening alongside a range of 3 resonant head tunings.
In the name of fair comparison, all tuning ranges will be played with bouncing the beater, as well as burying it.

The higher reso head provided a punchier kick sound. Loved it.

I like my resonant head just a 8th turn above finger tightening because I love the way that sucker just flaps, it sounds cool and it looks cool as hell

As I usually tune my batter head to medium, my reso head without a port hole is also tuned to medium. However, with a port hole, I tune the reso to medium-high. I would love to see a comparison of batter head tension to reso head tension with and without port holes to see if I am dreaming up things.

nice video! I practice with a mic'ed kit and my bass drum bass is giving me listening fatigue, but low cutting it kinda destroys the sound too. your video showed me that its the deep resonance of a low tuned reso head thats actually my problem!

It is nice to see you playing heel down after each stoke of the drum have it’s full potential and not stifling the drum. When you play all other drums you don’t bury the stick into the drum! A lot of players have a bad habit of doing this playing the bass drum. I myself tune my bass drum to the lowest tuning to get the lowest possible note. After all it should be the lowest pitch drum of the kit.

In the studio is a different story than a live setting. In a live setting for me tuning the resonant head too low resulted in nothing but flab out of the subs even with EQ and using a gate. But, I found tuning it way up can help keep it more controlled and the low mids can be EQd out leaving the sub frequencies free to "kick." The sound was also quicker and more controlled. In the studio I do like a lower tuning.

Thanks for posting. It was nice to see someone do a video where different tunings are presented in quick succession for easy comparison. I've always been curious about this but lazy. If it sounded good, I just left it. It sounds like that's still my plan.

I believe most of you if not all of you guys commenting, haven't heard the video with a nice pair of headphones, cause in each tuning option, there is difference..

The medium clearly shortened the sustain vs low, probably because of the two heads having less similar tuning. Very cool comparo again!

I feel like it would make a bit more difference on a ringier bass drum, like on a jazz or bop drum, especially a smaller one

Good video, I think the traditional size v style of music suited to the recommended size usually works for the best. Nice snare, btw. I have a 7 piece DrumCraft drum kit in bound in exactly the same specs as the snare in this video, the only drawback for me is that the kick is a 22x20", but that won't be as such for too long, I know a guy who's going to take it down to 22x16", can't wait!! Thanks for all of the great content. 👍

To me the biggest change I heard was the change in sustain or decay of the note which is G1 with a fundamental of 49 hz the pitch did fluctuate but averaging close to g1 . Were you using the shure beta on the front reso head or the mystery mic inside the port of the kick ?
@calzaondrums
@calzaondrums 3 года назад
High tuning has less low end and less sustain, but they all sound nice as long as the batter head is tuned nice IMO

It's cool to talk about the tune ...but what about the reso head itself? Should we only use single play heads?
@ChristopherSackett

Heard a little bit of overtones on the medium and high tunings of the reso head, mainly when burying the beater, but other than that, there was pretty much no difference at all. In a mix, especially, those little overtones would never be heard.

Hi, would you mind letting me know what the product is that you’re using around your porthole? I’ve used the bass drum O’s on an 18” Yamaha Stage Custom bass drum, and unfortunately it now produces a horrible rattling sound when the beater strikes the batter side. I’m hoping by removing and replacing the O’s with something else, I can fix the problem.

Difference is there!! medium or high best to my ears, low is missing a tad of resonance for me.

From my experience, usually you have a better time tuning the whole bass drum low when in a live situation. Seems to be easier to deal with

I prefer the reso side medium tuned. My Ludwig down beat it tuned the same only thing is I like it when it bounces back and forth with the vintage sound.

So is that a thing of iron cobras to do a metallic clicking sound on each stroke? Mine does it too and i hate it.
@drumdog

Heard that from a few drummers, @drumsenjoyment. Those nuances in hardware sounds can be personal. Sometimes, it's all about finding gear that perfectly matches your touch.

seeing as how I am Never in the front of the kick while playing. I usually place the reso head to a medium to tight tuning-i set a full unused coffee can on the head then tune the wrinkles flat-then i fandangle the lugs until the wrinkles begin to reform on the surface & I have had enormous success in this method-I learned it from the groove master himself.-Mister Rob Brown, check out his channel as his thoughts are mighty insightful and knowledgeable... Groove Responsibly....

I think there's a more noticeable difference if you alternate between burying the beater and feathering it

The frequency change is evident with headphones. Low res was lower pitch and more punch

All of the beat examples are half bouncing, half burying, for this exact reason 👌

But did it make any difference in the feel?
@drumdog
@drumdog 3 года назад
Honestly, not so much on this drum! Didn't notice a difference in pedal response at all. It's a fairly large 22x18" kick though 🤔
@DrumGalaxy
@DrumGalaxy 3 года назад
@@drumdog Interesting. I just tuned my 22x18 kick today. Used a tune bot. 61Hz batter and 91Hz reso. Between an F and an F# on the fundamental note. Feels a lot punchier to me. Great sound when I recorded it as well. Really focused. It's a DW with a shell note of A. A bit low for me if I was going for that specific note. Not enough action off the batter head.

I much prefer lowest possible reso head tubing for kicks
@joetrudellmajesticrhythms7269
It looks like you din't tune it up much..meduim should be Half turn on lugs...and high tuning you should have gone full turn on all tension lugs. the bass head shouldn't have any movement. I don't know what you consider High tuning but that isn't it
