I like my resonant head just a 8th turn above finger tightening because I love the way that sucker just flaps, it sounds cool and it looks cool as hell
The interval for jazz tuning with a 10” and 14” doesn’t work so great. I’ve had 2 silverstar jazz kits in the past and my first one was blue sparkle, it had a fantastic open tone to it.
Great comparison video. (Could have done without the ride and crash cymbals.) I never herd an Ash kit before and was really impressed. I did hear a difference in all kits but they were small. What were the bearing edges on each kit.
I now have the G2 Clear on the toms, on a Tama Starclassic Performer maple/birch kit. Sounds very crisp. I always had G1 Coated. That sounds a bit warmer. I like both.
Thank you sooo much. I was realy frustrated with my HiHat/ double Bass Pedal Setup, because i didnt had the idea to put the double Bass Pedal on the left Side of the HiHat Pedal. Now im satisfied with my setup :D
Just got my double pedal and got it close but it needed tweaking so thanks for the info. Subbed …now if I can only magically get my speed up I’ll be happy.
Really glad you found this helpful! If you're looking for some tips on how to play faster doubles then please do check out our website ( drum.dog ) when you get the chance, Nick has put together a few videos covering techniques that should help, cheers! 🙂
Having played for 35 years myself and reluctant to change anything, as I felt it would be like trying to figure out something but after watching this video I feel set free and going to make the change because I felt some low back stiffness and my left arm starting to bother me some so thank you very much !!!
My new kit came with the pedal set with a pretty tight spring and pretty far back angle. And man i have been adjusting and changing the settings a ton. I can't figure out where i like it 😅. Now im here lol😂
I have a Tama Silverstar bop kit which I use for all my gigs, not just jazz or small venues, but I've never been satisfied with the sound I get when I do the occasional outdoor festival gig, to the point where I considered buying a rock kit with a 22" or 24" kick drum. I had one of those outdoor gigs last night, so in preparation I used the tips in this video. I followed the tuning exactly and even bought an Evans EQ Pillow. The only difference is my batter head is a coated Remo PowerStroke 3. My kick drum sounded awesome! Now I realize mic choice/placement and sound system attributes have a lot to do with it, but from my vantage point behind the drums I was thrilled with the punch and tone I heard. I'm glad I didn't buy that second kit as my bop kit is to easy to transport and fits nicely in my Honda Civic.
Interesting, but in the initial demo you play thumbs up (french grip), but in the explanation, you play more german/american grip. I presume the technique is the same, but in my opinion precission is vital. Anyway, thanks for tanking the time to make great videos and inspire.
Phones can definitely limit the sound quality! If you get a chance to listen on a better system or headphones, we'd love to know if you notice the differences more clearly. Thanks for watching!
Yamaha have the best looking hoops. I know it's a weird thing to focus on , but I've always loved the look of their hoops. Maybe they're wider than most...I don't even know.
To me the biggest change I heard was the change in sustain or decay of the note which is G1 with a fundamental of 49 hz the pitch did fluctuate but averaging close to g1 . Were you using the shure beta on the front reso head or the mystery mic inside the port of the kick ?
What I heard immediately and unmistakenly was the difference between 30 and 45 degree bearing edges, not between birch and maple. The stage with a 45 had a louder attack on the bass and the rc had more sustain on the toms.
