@SavageGreywolf

AD&D system shock rules explicitly have to do with spells that artificially age or reshape the body of the target (e.g., polymorph), it doesn't have to do with the amount of damage taken.
@mightystu49

I'm fairly certain system shock didn't come from damage but from specific conditions, like rapidly changing size. That, or it's an awesome Sci-Fi PC action game
@ikaemos
@ikaemos 4 месяца назад
I wonder where Gary stole that term from, because it's been cropping up ever since; even 5e has System Shock as a (completely forgotten) optional rule in the DMG when you take half of your HP in damage. It definitely sounds like something out of a mecha wargame. "Operator, system shock detected. Hard reset is advised."
@SavageGreywolf
@SavageGreywolf 4 месяца назад
@@ikaemos Wikipedia lists the first 'thing' called "A Shock to the System" as a 1984 novel- which means that as far as they're concerned, AD&D is the first pop cultural use. it's possible it's an outdated medical term. Maybe something like cold shock, or surgical stress?

As a 5e player, I always heard people say they "spend" a spell slot, not filling it 4th and 5th edition have not the same death system. In 5th, the failed death saves reset when you gain hit points, without needing a rest.

Yeah I recall thinking of it as discarding spent shell casings or something with my Bard when I was playing 5e.
@SavageGreywolf

That's because spellcasting works the opposite of how it used to in D&D. In previous editions a wizard or cleric would select what spells they had access to _when preparing spells at the start of the day,_ including what spell slot was being used for that spell. For example, if you had one third level spell slot, at the start of the day you had to decide if you were putting Fireball into that spell slot. And if you did, then if later in the day you were in a situation where you wanted the Fly spell instead... well, too bad, you prepared Fireball today. Essentially they changed it so every class worked like what used to be the sorcerer's gimmick "spontaneous spellcasting".

The prestige class story is a prime example that if the rules say that some player options are... well optional or possible only for NPCs - the immediately become the norm and everyone uses them. LIke feats in 5e. But w prestige classes people pulled them in from every setting regardless of what campaign they were in. The same goes for races now... "heey can I play warforged?"

We use that rule in our AD&D game, where monsters can move through doors effortlessly, and it creates some pretty hilarious scenes, like a tiny worm creature opening a massive stone door that took three successful open doors rolls from the PCs. Likewise, we have charmed creatures like goblins strictly so that we could force them to open doors. They don’t usually live very long.
@g-magewizard7007
@g-magewizard7007 4 месяца назад
I also experienced some of these scenes with stone doors and small critters opening them, but i think its worth noting that effortless opening doesnt actually apply to monsters on the side of the PCs

An interesting tidbit about Baldur's Gate 3s representation of spell slots: they do it in the way that you imagine it. All your spell slots are "filled in" at the start of the day, presumably with magic (they are shining in a bright blue color), and when you cast a spell they are emptied out (they turn dull gray), leaving only the socket behind. So I think the reason some people might only make sense of the system after playing that game is that it's done in the much more intuitive way of older editions than how it is described in 5e. I feel like the 5th edition spellcasting system is by far one of its most game-ified systems, in that it can work really well and be a lot of fun if you enjoy dnd as a game, but it is really hard to explain narratively.
@ikaemos
@ikaemos 4 месяца назад
Yeah, when Mike describes it here, it _kinda_ makes sense (the slots begin "free" and get "occupied" by a cast spell, almost like magic interference building up. "I can't cast anymore, all my brain-slots are filled with static!"), but I've never met a group who thinks of them that way.

I loved the 3e Iconics. I bought the whole series of novels about them. When I DMed a group of new players (my cousin and his friend) I added a DMPC/henchman and let them choose which one to add to their party. They chose Jozan the cleric. But they had the choice of Liddea, Regdar, Ember, Mialee, Krusk, and Tordek. I added personality quirks. Like Tordek snoring and Regdar being unable to swim. Jozan was converted to Lathander and a light cleric (instead of Pelor) and his quirk was he was afraid of the dark. He carried candles and lanterns and used light spells and refused to go into complete darkness. This made night sneak missions impossible because Jozan had to have his light spell on his shield. I tried to take a backseat to the players but they tended to argue all the time so Jozan would have to mediate. He also was the tank, with a sorcerer and a ranger archer. I took them through my version of the Isle of Dread. I used the map and changed many of the elements to fit 5e.

Re: Closing doors. It's mildly important if (a) navigation is significant and (b) mapping is occurring, because a closed door that should be open can mislead about whether or not you've been in an area before. It's moderately significant when used in tandem with the rule about only being able to open doors on specific rolls + random encounters (so that you're chewing up time trying to open doors that swung shut behind you). This can get kinda silly pretty easily, though. It can be VERY important if you're running away from something and discover that the door has shut behind you. Or if the door is trapped and the trap resets when it closes.

The thought that prestige classes weren’t going to be used by players just goes to show you how out of touch the writers were with reality. Another fun episode, Ben. Wild to see Mike in this sort of community video. Significant amounts of ultraviolet light definitely doesn't fall on the Earth at night. :-P If it did, scorpions would glow at night. Certainly, there is some stellar radiation of all types, even up to cosmic rays, but it's pretty dark and things like cosmic rays usually just pass straight through objects, so you can't really see by them under normal conditions. I feel like that says something about the intent of the designers who wrote that, but I'm not sure what. :-P I would also say healing surges and hit dice are different beasts. Healing Surges were used with almost every spell, so you couldn't usually heal another character unless they had Healing Surges left. Also, everyone could Second Wind to use a Healing Surge during every encounter. Hit Dice are mostly used during short rests.

36:30 Kelsey makes a point here, the famous STRICT TIME RECORDS may actually be outdated advice in the mid-1980s, when 1e was more played at home tables. It was no longer a real-time MMO populated by an entire city's wargaming club. But it probably made it into the book by way of inertia. Makes it funny to think that even people in the 80s didn't know what the hell Gary was on about in all-caps.
