I never really took meditation seriously until I found it as one of the aspects of a routine program I reluctantly followed if I was to expect to see a measure of success; I started out with 10 minutes ... and six months later I am up to 20 and even with just 20 minutes I am now a true believer and grateful that you have an explanation for how it actually works to strengthen that connection. It’s like I am aware that my subconscious has been trying to work with my conscious but constant interruptions (from wherever) causes my mind to prevent it from synthesizing. As a test, I blindfolded myself to walk a circular drive over the course of two weeks to see how long it took me to ascertain where I might be at any point in my walk around it. The meditation inspired me to do it. I did it and knew then that meditation was about focus. Mental martial arts without the movement. Getting in tune with your mind ... is the best way I can describe my experience with it. Now it’s like I have regular epiphanies around the same time I’m getting close to doing the 20 min meditation ... and program routine I’ve been on; put together by someone who’s had experience with the martial arts.

Great video - Love your work Dr. Goleman on EI. Have your EI books as required reading at Pepperdine U. Starting to shape my dissertation around this subject as it applies to leadership. So jazzed to see you and Dr. Davidson doing this work together. So much to learn from you on this - and anxious to pursue any unanswered questions you may still have.

Hey Richie, just finished Chapter 12 of Altered Traits. Gamma wave synchronicity is fascinating. Have you ever considered a comparison study on the monks results and those of very young children to see if EEG/fMRI results yield this synchronicity in both? Perhaps, we are born synchronistic and are taught asynchronistic behavior. Fascinating stuff. Thanks for your efforts, research and time.

Excellent. You are giving a voice through a sober, educated mind to something which was tossed aside years ago due to its introduction via the drugged mind. Does anyone remember Ram Dass, Timothy Leary? I do, and I used meditation for its positive affect.

Hi Ritchie/Goleman, Does change in traits have to take time and practice always ? Will a change in "Perspective" promote an immediate change ? For example: i see a shadow and take it to be a ghost. now, i try to calm myself and there are a lot of behavior traits associated with the inherent fear. once i know its a shadow [some means], the behavior changes in a instant ! Have heard that after NDE people change completely [not that the experience is real or not, thats altogether a different question... the perspective has changed]. does practice aid change in behavior and traits or is it perspective change that matters ?

They know that. Virtually everyone knows it. Davidson, in particular, is doing a lot of brain studies on yogis and monks to understand it according to Western science. They're speaking on an intro level for those who are new to the subject. What they've done is to correlate evidence from rigorous scientific studies in order to say: "This is what the science shows so far." They're separating rigorous studies from studies that weren't designed very well, whose results are suspect. Because in the West, many people need such evidence in order to try it.

Western people are hunting for Indian treasure of philosophical and psychological knowledge. But we Indian are constantly focusing on western culture. Research shows that a good relationship is leading to a happy life. Where India has the lower divorce rate in all over the world, in fact, there is no word like divorce in Sanskrit(ancient Indian language). Despite all of that India has much lower life expectancy than most of the developed country. Is'nt it true that we Indian so much concern about what we do not have and forget about what we do have?
