I fully cannot watch these podcasts without wanting to jump on that fuckin sofa and just verbalize all the thoughts I have and points I think they're missing. The frustration level is mad
I think the reason people get defensive is because the government never want to acknowledged the part they play in this. Whenever something bad happens they always have the same debate about music. but the media never want to talk about the other real problems. Poverty. People living in big estates, where they might just need to defend themselves just to survive. Jail system, putting people in jail for weed and fucking up thier opportunity to get jobs, which basically means they most likely will do crime to make money, father's being in jail just for drugs. Kids growing up fatherless which is another factor. Government cuts to social clubs/youth clubs after shcool programmes. Investment in communities always bring long term benefits. Music is a factor but if the government never want to take responsibility why should poor people take responsibility. That's how I see it. I can see both sides
"Music is a factor but if the government never want to take responsibility why should poor people take responsibility." We should take responsibility of ourselves because it is our brothers and sisters and kids and friends dying, thats why. Ultimately we need to look after each other. Of course there are systemic problems but we have to do what we can to try and stop the madness.
Daniel Chirwa I agree with that. I was just explaining why people who love rap/grime etc get defensive when they hear that question. We have to take accountability and call things out aswell because the government clearly don't care
Music has so much influence on life in general not just violence. It changes moods and certain songs can defo trigger feelings u weren't feeling before the tune, there's good and bad in everyone but a song can defo trigger a action u do good or bad.
so... its not the reduced powers of the met police (stop and search) its not because the number of police on the street has been reduced by 20,000 its not because of cuts to child services including play schemes and after school clubs its because of the music. bearing in mind the murder rate in london is significantly lower than it was 30 years ago when even grime wasn't invented yet let alone drill. nahhhhh, its the music.
MrSafeboss Children’s minds are easily influenced dumb dumb, they look up to rappers today of course the music is fucking with their brains. It’s part of this “road man” image.
I can say 100% that music influences us. Were people in the states drinking leaning, taking xanax, popping Percs anywhere near as much until irresponsible rappers started glamorising it? Drill music is fucking with these kids I swear. We are coming to a point where we are developing a global black consciousness, these issues about the way we portray OURSELVES in media and the messages we put out need to be a serious part of the discussion.
The emotive nature of the question will typically elicit that defensive response, I feel. People perceive/interpret those words "plays a part" as "is responsible for" rather than "contributes towards"... slightly tangential, but accepting that that thing we like also has a negative aspect to it isn't always easy to do, whether it be that tasty food we like being unhealthy, or a person we think is cool also being an occasional shoplifter or whatever. The effect of cognitive dissonance, ultimately. :)
The reason people have a hard time accepting music has a responsibility to play towards violence because it brings us so much joy. Now if music was the case and we want to end the violence it will mean the end of music.
The thing is its a scientific fact that psychopaths brains are very different from normal people. So I disagree that it's nurture. I think it's both nature as in they are born more inclined to do certain things but nurture as well because the way they grow up and are treated plays a massive role in the way they see the world and look at people and interact with people in a bad way
Poet in the discussion of true happiness you are wrong. becos Pablo Escobar was truly happy until he was caught so there is not one idea of true happiness! big up for the podcast and keep up the good work :D
No but my point is how tf dose Poet no? If people who live that life are genuinely happy or not, he try`s so hard to force his opinion on other people when, that is all it is his opinion.
Going back to that same village philosophy, when this topic comes up we have to refer to the whole as opposed to the part because that is the same village attitude you kicked off with which we need to step up on, don't do a 180 on us now Chucks (love the way you made a man freeze wid it tho). eg lets say the village here is our Social spiritual Financially Mental etc situation is all up to level then music alone wouldn't make you go left but with each situation compromised the more influenced you're likely to be. and lastly we're even dumb or dumber because we don't even realise that just by making sure that every single person (where YOU CAN!) that you spend your money at looks like the person in your mirror... just that alone will cure a lot this sickness in our few an far between fragmented villages.
It's like when kids shoot up schools back in the day they would always say It's because of rock music. Personally I think for a guy to do something that crazy he must have mental issues and not give a fuck about life anymore. It is a factor but not the biggest. However I do gt fustrated when you got guys that glorify violence they havn't experienced. Fake rappers. I will always respect a rapper talking about what he has seen and been through. Like a kendrick. Street storytelling. But alot of rappers say shit like they have killed 10 people when that's impossible. Every song kill kill kill. We know your not living that life. Difference between talking about pain and violence and glorifying.
Poet annoys me sometimes, he is the type of person who thinks he is an intellectual but.. it's not quite happening for him. Of course people can be born "wicked", or least much more prone to be anyway; the brain is a funny thing, some people are born without empathy, it takes a level of non-empathy to commit evil deeds. Why do you think most evil shit is committed by men? because generally men are less emotionally intelligent and empathetic
Art imitates real life and real life imitates art. The old skool rappers of the 80's/90's copied the dress sense of the drug dealers with the jewellery/garms, swagger and slang etc. and made it popular fashion through their music videos, yutes see this and all wanna get fresh in Jokes, Jordan's etc. the peer pressure to acquire desirable goods leads to crime. The road man we the rappers making good legal money trying act like them and want a piece of the pie and gives birth to "Gangsta rap", I believe 80% of the then "gangsta " rappers were not really what they portrayed, probs the same amount with Trap/drill rappers today, but this is the vicious circular effect we dealing with.
“Art imitates life” the problems we face as a community predates Trap music. Yes slavery and economics play a massive part in the position our youths find themselves in today. Police brutality and The historic criminalisation of Black males also play a part because the majority of our youths who become involved come from single parent households where their fathers have also been involved in the criminal justice system. Exclusion from school also plays a major part, the educators know they have failed Black boys and girls. Black boys face racism from the police from an early age so trust in authority and the system that should protect them is eroded. We need commitment in relationships prior to having children because when men have made a psychological commitment to a woman they make better fathers. Less single mothers. By the time our sons get to trap music they have most likely experienced all the issues mentioned. So they identify with trap music. Remove the music and the police will still racially profile your son, the teacher will still exclude our children and we will still receive less pay or be denied jobs based on race.
You can't blame music for a person faults alot of people want to blame their behaviour on music, Games and environment but in truth it just choice they just find it easier to past the blame then take responsibility for their actions. Trust me i have been on both side of life the road and legit and to be completely honest it was all my choice.
Yes it does. If you watch a scary movie and turn the sound off it isn’t scary. Watch a sad video with sad music it’s sad, watch the same video with drum n bass and it ain’t sad no more
Poet just constantly adding unnecessary shit. Dan talking about how music shapes you and poet finding the need to say "not solely" as if it wasn't the most obvious thing in the world.
link up and grime daily are not helping the situation with the content they release. We all know that SOME of there content glorifies gang lifestyle.Too many examples of draw from both here and the U.S
