Honestly, the problem is cards with "gain" effects that also have ? stats. Mathematically, it doesn't make sense. You cannot add to an undefined value to get a defined value. This is why they "need" to treat ? as 0 because otherwise, their poorly written effects won't work. Ideally, any ? stat monster that has a stat modulation effect *must* be the kind that sets the stat to a value. In other words, the effect defines the undefined value. Treating ? as 0 is a contradiction anyway since 0 is still a defined value, the opposite of undefined.

@@MansMan42069 as it was brought up in the video, the original value of monsters with ? stats is treated as, “becomes/is set to,” 0 while it is on the field, unless its effect modifies its original attack. It is all wording that means the same thing in this case, so there is no contradiction. I will say that it does make things less clean cut, and gives rise to more complicated rulings, although the alternative has its own issues.

@@VGM7217 That's my point. It's because of the actual mathematical contradiction that _requires_ these undefined stats to be treated as 0 because otherwise, they wouldn't work. In order to make it work, they needed to plaster a workaround by saying "? Is 0". If a value is x and I add 100, that value is x + 100. I cannot give you any other value because I don't know what x is.

How we know it is based on information we are given, and here we are told that the variable is 0. As such, we know the value of the variable. How does that contradict anything? In all honesty, it follows the same equation that everything else follows, X + Y₁... = Z. Here X is the original stat, Y₁... are any stat gains/losses, and Z is the final state value. We are always given the value of X, under normal circumstances it is simply written on the card. In the case of ?, we are told the value by another source, through the cards effect or game mechanics (both of which only apply while on the field). No matter what we are being given X and any Ys, while we are solving for Z. So your equation X + 100, would be X + 100 = Z, and we are given that X = 0. So we end up with 0 + 100 = Z, and solve for Z = 100. It is the same as any other question with variables involved. Sure, not every problem will just give you variables, but if you are meant to get a defined value they will. Here we are given all the variables we need to solve the problem. What is the issue?

We require those effects and game mechanics because without them, it remains a contradiction. Which means my point still stands. Still a contradiction which can only be "reconciled" with a band aid solution. Literally handwaving away the problem instead of solving the underlying cause. So yeah, nice try, but no.
