Toby Hodges gets a spin on a new personal electric watercraft. No emissions, noise or wake. Will this finally dethrone the jetski?! It certainly has lots of potential for the rental, hospitality and event markets

Thanks for the introduction to this. Love the foil concept although needing a metre of draft for a small inshore boat is a bit of a contradiction in mission requirements. I wonder - has anyone tried packing a jet ski hull full of batteries and an electric motor yet? Going to need considerably more power tho as the drag of the wetted hull surface doesn’t really get reduced like with foils. Lots of interesting ideas to come soon for this market I’m sure.

I used to love foilers but they have a few drawbacks that limit them. You will hit something at speed one day, and the foil either has to break or fold in some way. Either way you are crashing at speed. Foils need to be really clean, or they fly badly. Above 20 kts there are real issues with cavitation, and ventilation is always an issue in rough water. Again, random crash at high speed. Foils are inherently tricky in engineering sense, so they are expensive to do right. (20K EU!!) I'd go for a ski setup with suspension and swamp-boat type prop for a hoon-craft.

I have already hit 2 floating objects wing foiling. Both catastrophic crashes. So, in 3 years of summer (lake) foiling , recreationally, about 20(aggregate) hrs per year, and 2 hits. The foils and lifting wings are super sensitive to any deformation. The same would be true for foils on a highspeed electric craft of any kind. Just ask the designers of the americas cup AC 75's. As thr OP pointed out the cavitation issues are going to unfortunately persist through this development cycle... i do hope they solve it as the ride on foils is amazing.

Was wondering how long it'd take for some company to bother making a hydrofoil PWC. (Seemed like an obvious idea, with all the needed parts to do it going back at least three decades.) But there it is now, and it seems neat. The only downside is you have to use more caution around other watercraft because they're not going to expect you to come up on them that quietly. (You likely don't want to be around somebody fishing or trawling, or towing water skis. Even some sailboats may be distracted trying to catch wind to go as fast, and will need space.) But if you use enough sense, it seems like a fun way to cruise a coastline or river.

Not necessarily.. lots of solar and wind power in the grid. Solar panels aren't particularly "dirty" to produce - their only weakness is cloudy days and nights.
@Rocketpax
@Rocketpax 2 года назад
@@redwolfexr What are you talking about? Photovoltaics are massively energy and resource intensive to produce. They have finally gotten to the point where they have a net positive energy production over a reasonable system cycle, but that is a somewhat recent ability. Wind with the massive composite structures and gearboxes and generators is in a similar boat. Not saying they aren't useful but we cannot pretend like they are anything close to "zero emission."
@redwolfexr
@redwolfexr 2 года назад
@@Rocketpax read what I said.. I didn't say they didn't take ENERGY to make. I said they were not particularly DIRTY to produce. (main energy need is melting the sand for the strata) This isn't particularly polluting. Solar cells last decades, with VERY tiny power reductions over that time. Most large panels have 20+ years at 95%. After that they take the same timeframe to degrade another 5%. But the point is that you have to go to third order back to try to "find" pollution. The motor doesn't produce any.

Perfect for private lakes with no wake zones and it being quite not disturbing anyone. Ride it to the buddies across the lake and have fun doing so. Improves water quality for the kids that swim in the lake. Everyone spills gas when refilling at least once. This will be functional for small extreme rural areas where getting gas is expensive and takes a while day to get to. Now just get this and combine with solar panels.
@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665
Theres lots of anchorages where gas jet skis are banned from because of noise and danger ... not just no wake zones ... the behaviour of the few... Etc.. but if you have an ancient port or coastal village with streets that people can walk through but were built for a loaded donkey as a goods vehicle ...you dont want screaming engines and blaring music or even large yatchs taking over. These are absolutely *not* "silent" and I actually really think it's a shame they're trying to market them as such. They make an awesome futuristic noise that is much quieter than a conventional engine and honestly that's a selling point: "Quiet, futuristic cruising". Though I will say there's no risk of them replacing jetskis until they start making them do upwards of 40 knots

Interesting that the multiple fouls are constantly auto adjusting to keep the ride smooth. Almost like a gyro works on 3D RC helicopters. Seems to be a very smooth ride that would be marketable to the older generation as I don’t see much maneuverability available for the young crowd. Pretty cool though.

I would argue that one of the main allures to jet skiing is the ability to creat huge sprays. Yes, there is a market for a quiet jet ski, as well as the smoother ride one would get on a Overboat, but replacing one with the other seems unlikely, as they are vastly different…😊👍🏽

This is basically going to make diving anywhere where people might use these extremely dangerous. At least divers could hear boats before, now the potential incidence of collision between surfacing divers and someone drunk on one of these is a deadly encounter for at least one person, and it's much harder to avoid for the diver because they cannot hear it. With fast, foiling sailboats, there was much less of a problem because they generally didn't want to go near dive areas. These kinds of things are going to be used in mooring fields and marinas where people might be snorkeling, swimming, diving and someone not paying attention on one of these can kill someone. All that said, I'd love to try one.
@yachtingworld
@yachtingworld 2 года назад
I guess the same philosophy could be applied to pedestrians being hit by electric cars? At least these can be geofenced/GPS regulated and only allowed to operate in certain zones. Or dive buoys have a geofence around them perhaps

@@yachtingworld Fair enough, but in the electric-car and pedestrian encounter, both parties have equal ability to spot each other. In this situation, the person on the foiling vehicle cannot see the diver. And in murky-enough water, the diver cannot see the vehicle, nor hear it

It seems like a rich early adopter's toy that's a step past the development R&D stage. Now imagine if the same tech could be applied to something with the motive powerplant of a jet ski. If the lift foils are small enough to present less drag than a jet ski hull when planing, then that thing would haul.

the fact jetskis are noisy is the reason they are safe, it alerts water users to keep an eye out as many rentals or general jetski users are unaware of the risk they present. Yet they are still the most dangerous craft due to excess speeds being operated by people often with a lack of experience or knowledge of rules on the water. With the foils, they are quiet but also present the possibility of losing control. Yes they are not as quick but 15 knots can certainly still cause some damage.

Economy of scale: products are more expensive when made in small quantities. You have to quickly make back a majority of that money spent on R&D, factory tooling, training, hiring, marketing, etc. or your new small business will go bankrupt. If I gave you $2,000, would you be able to make a Macbook?
