Does painting a ukulele change its sound?

On inexpensive ukes like these I wouldn't see any problem in painting. As you say, a good paint job overrides any very minor change in sound. No on would ever notice. Thanks. Rich

Thank you. I appreciate your thoughts on this. People with very keen hearing might notice a tiny difference, but I wouldn't trade my painted uke for 6 just like it not painted. Rich

I wouldn't see how that would change things at all. I've got one ukulele painted all over and another painted just on the top. I would paint it to suit me and suggest you paint yours to suit you. Enjoy!

I have friends who have proved to me that painted ukuleles sound just as good as non-painted ones. Go ahead and make your ukulele a work of art! Rich

I like bamboo as a ukulele wood for the reasons you mention. I don't like koa because I don't like the idea of cutting down trees in Hawaii. 😊😊

@@richdavis4007 I like those bamboo Ukes too! They are awesome! And boy, I think a lot of people would be surprised if they looked up what wood their Uke is made of and found it on the endangered list. There are so many better options, like wood from farmed trees and of course, bamboo.

I support what you are saying completely. People who want wood that is rare and expensive are misguided.

I am a painter and have started selling painted Ukes and Uke bags. My last one was a bamboo uke and the one before that was a home made cigar box. I agree glossy ukes aren't as loud though I've wondered if part of that isn't that we can't feel the sound with our hands on the uke as well as with non gloss ones. No doubt heavy coat of paint or varnish would quiet the uke. I've been trying to get a decent recording (while singing) with a banjo uke and sometimes quieter is better. Banjo uke is louder by far than resonator.

@@richdavis4007 ... Any weight, particularly added to the top, will stifle the higher pitched sounds. Spruce, for example, is much lighter then, say, mahogany therefore the sound is brighter. It's also a good idea to use the hardest (and thinnest and therefore lighter) varnish possible which will help keep the sound bright. Painting a uke with, say, acrylic paint (which is rubbery) wont do the sound or volume any good. At most I can see adding a few flowers, or whatever, here and there, but painting the entire surface doesn't seem to me to be a great idea. Anyway, I've considered adding some stickers, and car pin-stripe'ing, here and there, to add to the looks of a uke.
