"Good posture", "Correct ergonomics" and stretching are the bane of my physiotherapy practice, it's like those three are the answer to everything. They're nice to do, but not nearly the whole picture when managing patients.

They can be helpful for sensitized patients in pain in our opinion, but unlikely the cause of it.

Isnt the point of strengthening exercises to correct your posture? Poor posture is caused by weak muscles. Weak muscles cause pain.
@YamatoXion
@YamatoXion 2 года назад
@@AnimeFreakish78 I'm afraid not. Pain is driven by your nervous & immune system and are affected by biomechanical, psychological and social factors. "Posture causing pain" has been debunked by the evidence base many many times over the years. Pain is complex and individual. Strength training helps to increase one's physical capacity to carry out a task, but it's not the only driver of pain for many people.
@Lucky10279
@Lucky10279 2 года назад
@@YamatoXion Sure, maybe is ultimately in your brain, but if you, say, break a bone, we would say that the pain you're in is because you broke a bone. Isn't the idea that posture causes some muscles to be overworked, compensating for other muscles that are underworked? If some muscles have to endure a lot more strength than they evolved to handle, it makes sense that they'd end up hurting. And if other muscles are under-utilized and hence lose strength, it makes sense that they would hurt when they do get used.

I love your myhbusting series. It's an easy to digest, sharable way for non experts too. Thank you so much. How does this hypothesis apply to structural deformities like scheuermann's kyphosis? There is pain associated with that - and it's postured based? Is is a matter of definition?

Thank you for the share! As a soon to be Physiotherapy student in Canada and current PTA in an orthopaedic sports injury clinic I often ponder on this question. Looking forward to the follow up! Physiotutors would you potentially draw on factors such as muscular weakness or neurophysiological parameters which lead to pain and if so what research would you recommend reading? I really appreciate the value you bring to our profession. Thanks again.

I am suffering from lower back pain right now and have been watching many videos on back posture and appropriate exercises - just about to start my new regime and then this video pops up opposing all the previous information! I don't know why but intuitively I believe the information in this video. My biggest issue has been that of 'adaptation' . If I go to the gym and work on my biceps they get bigger and stronger and yet when I am digging or mixing cement I am suddenly told that my posture is the problem and the cause of my back pain - I would have thought that because I dig and mix concrete regularly the associated muscles would over time adapt and compensate for the workload - no different than going to the gym. I also tend to lean to the notion that putting my back through a range of motion to prevent 'over adaptation' to relatively small work routines intuitively makes sense. For a novice like me trying to find how to best deal with my very real back pain, once again I find the sheer range of conflicting recommendations overwhelming.

Strengthening in the gym requires good form. You cant expect poor posture while bending over to produce strength in the muscles intended to use. Doing an exercise with improper form means using the wrong muscles. If you are experiencing low back pain it is due to weak glutes and hips. So working out your back wont fix the pain. Doing hip and glute exercises will offload the weight to your glutes where it should be, and stop applying to your back which isnt designed to handle the movements youre doing. Your glutes and hips are responsible for those movements and they need to be fully activated when you bendover to prevent overload on your lower back. Athlean X has an excellent video showing how to strengthen hips simply look up athlean x hips and its the only exercise ive noticed helps with low back pain.

I get the spirit of the "bodies aren't machines that wear out over time" argument, but if this were actually true, where are all the 200 y.o.'s? There's clearly limits to adaptation, as well.

Please drive your car with both tires on one side flat. The car still drives and "doesn't complain." Now please see if that's mechanically sound. This is the most reductionist and ridiculous nonsense I have seen in the field in a long time. Pain seemed to have been important enough to addict millions of people to opiates but correcting posture is a bridge too far? 😂😂😂
