In this video, I address the question: does a sermon always need to follow the structure of law and then gospel? Or, are there other ways in which law and gospel are to be distinguished in preaching?

I've been thinking about this topic a lot recently. Thank you for clearly addressing it.

I think that the insistence that reductive/radical Lutherans have towards Law-Gospel preaching is an idolatry of psychology. It’s an addiction towards wanting to receive a certain chemical feeling in the worship service, a problem that is just as pervasive as emotion-driven worship in the evangelical church… Only based on existential relief rather than ecstatic highs. We should not idolize our own emotions, but rather submit ourselves to the Third Commandment, by listening to the word of God wherever it leads us. Not that absolution isn’t part of the Christian experience (particularly for those who *actually have* troubled consciences), but when all preaching becomes an extended absolution, we’ve idolized our own feelings above the text, something we should repent of.. and then receive absolution. In reality Walther’s law and gospel works better in the confessional then in the pulpit.

The Word of God is written as a story. It unfolds starting in Genesis 1. Preach the text is right. Read the way God speaks to us. He starts by showing us His loving kindness to make a place where he can dwell with man and enjoy one another. Then he blesses all of us with all he created. Then in Genesis 3 we see man’s response to God’s loving kindness to us. Cain wanted to satisfy God by living to please God with his own works, Abel cling to the promise of Genesis 3:15. Genesis 3:15 is all Gospel (salvation and judgement) not law and Gospel. Luther always taught that the law and our sinful nature had a kinship because it prompts our hearts to try and win approval from God through our works. Therefore the law is powerless. Paul says this also. The Pharisees lived by law, and because of this they had no room left in their hearts for Christ to enter there.

hi! I am wondering if, the "word as a means of grace" only applies to specifically the gospel part of the sermon? Or rather, the entire sermon no matter what part of scripture is covered?

About preaching the text..how would you evaluate Luthers Palm Sunday sermon 1529? He says that we already heard the text in advent and he want to talk about the Lord’s supper

Do Lutherans and Anglicans practice expository preaching?

It largely depends on the pastor. Sermons should certainly be based on the text.

If you want to see the Bible's first Law-Gospel story read Genesis 4 and God's warning to Cain.

The law/gospel dichotomy is a false dichotomy. In it the Reformers found a facile way to do away with any passages that didn't support their cause of justification by faith alone without the deeds of the law. And so "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us" is named Law. The final judgment in Mt. 25 has to be massaged if not tortured so that as not to oppose Lutheran dogma of justification by faith. The same with the Beatitudes and so much more. Put away the lego blocks and let's apply ourselves to some serious theology.

I suggest watching his longer form videos on law and gospel as you seem to misunderstand the classical Lutheran perspective on it. Firstly, this distinction is clear in the text. It is impossible to deny that scripture gives both law which is to be followed and gospel which is purely gift. This does not mean everything is either or, as things can be gospel to one and law to another. For example, the quote you give has both law and gospel. The fact that we are to 10:59 forgiven of our trespasses is clearly gospel and the fact that we are to forgive others is a law to be followed.

Obedience to God's law is not a work or deed of the law. It is our righteousness. Luther never understood what the law is all about. Romans 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. This is our obedience not Christ's. 1Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord. 19 I am a stranger in the earth: hide not thy commandments from me.
