I'm surprised Norway doesn't have the highest percent of people getting sent to prison multiple times. That prison sounds fantastic.

Because, as with all scandinavian countries, life outside of prison is even more luxurious. Super high salaries, free education and free health care leads to a much more luxurious life than the prisoners get. Socialism.

Jebodeiasque Also, there are adequate support systems for the mentally ill and sick. Addicts, the mentally ill, unwanted aids sufferers, are not dumped out on the street there to commit crimes simply to eat. If life is great and you have a support system, you are about 90% less likely to engage in crime. Remember though, that it is extremely expensive to live there, and you are helping pay for all that support if you work there. There is not a culture of having the biggest and the newest everything. It is a completely different mindset!

Real1Gaming Super high salaries, which are cut to less than half after taxes and free healthcare that you aren't going to use because public sector is so ineffective that you'll go to the private sector anyway.

Jebodeiasque I once spoke to a Danish police officer. He Said that even though Danish prisens Are like hotel it still sucks. You Are ristricted to a very small room with little human contact (You get one hour in the gym, two hours in the yard and work according to what officers Think would fit. Often the work has to be done in your own room) You Can visit other inmates (unless officers Think u might be up to something) but only one Per Day and the inmates usually want to get out within half an hour because they Got pissed on each other. You might also be afraid of the other inmates (in Denmark isolation is often chosen by inmates who owes money to the wrong people) Then add isolation from the World and your family. You Can see your family once a week (supervised) but only if They chose to come (often They Are ashamed or just sick of having to drive five hours to see someone for Twenty minutes) All letters and calls Are also controlled.

The system we have in most scandinavian cuntries would not work in other cuntries as we in sweden have proven. A homogen population that agrees with the moral good in following our laws, combined with a system where crimes of necessity are almost nill, combined with a system where almost nobody holds any lojalty to anything else rather than themself and maybee the state amongst other things. We here in sweden ate haveing the awakening that it doesn't wotk at all against honor, gang or clan based violence. So this video is a gross oversimpification of a incredibly complicated problem.

Well this has certainly given me an alternative perspective! It does raise a pretty good question "Would you rather punish an offender and in a sense, have your revenge? or would you rather rehabilitate them, and ensure they never do it to another person again?" I'm certain it'd cost more to house and care for an inmate for any length of sentence, than it would to give them the skills theyd need to leave their "Life of crime" behind for good. Keep up the good work T2! You're Killing it as always!

Scandinavians are 82% atheist so that Christian revenge at the basis of US judicial system is gone. Americans can lock a 17 year old black kid up for live over a joint or shoplifting under 3 strikes and mandatory minimums. That means free prison labor for 50 years 'cause a plantation economy has no shelf life in America. It costs about a million per life to house, feed, and bury a prisoner.

@steficristian6003
@steficristian6003 7 лет назад
Not everybody lives in the same conditions as Norwegians. The Norwegian prison system works because despite the prisons being luxurious, they are still a downgrade from the Norwegian standard because a normal Norwegian already has all those things plus the freedom to move around the country and visit his family etc. An inmate does not, and thus despite being offered with a luxurious home, he would still rather live in a home equally luxurious but with his family and friends as well. In other countries, this doesn't happen. In countries where standards of living are lower, ( or where the standard of living can vary more widely because of a bigger class divide ) this luxurious lifestyle is way above their normal standard so many would just pile up to commit crime. The question is not whether it works in Norway, the question is whether it works in other places as well.

The US is out of control with imprisoning people , but I don't think we could ever do this. We aren't a socialist state . Our culture and economy is too different . Our economy values hard workers and competition . This would destroy the need for competition and opt damage our economy. More people who commit crimes so they have free food and a place to stay. It wouldn't work out.
@CockatooDude

+TuPapiJ Basic human needs aren't different in America, those are universal. If Norway had the same prison system as the US, they would have the same problems as the US does. Also, it isn't a socialist state, it's a social democracy, very different. The Soviet Union was a proper socialist state. In a social democracy, it is still a capitalist system, but one where there are more government benefits and less government corruption via large corporations. The US more than has the money to have a prison system like Norway, it's just spending it all on the military, and not very effectively on that either. If the military budget was cut by say 100 billion a year, which would be only 1/6 of the budget, so many major issues could be fixed in the US it isn't even funny.

While I can't speak to the political upset of public opinions against the potential victimizers (image of criminal activity here in the U.S.) getting and "easy way out" with the Norwegian exemplar... I can point out that the huge greater portion of criminals incarcerated are not absolutely monsters. Of course, there are those who did and do horrible things. However, the greater portion of wrong doing in the U.S. is more about the quick extra cash... selling drugs, bootlegging liquor (tax free), theft, etc... These are people who would otherwise be "regular Joe's" except there was some contributing factors and the lure of fast, easy money... It stands to reason that some form of "rehabilitation" should only make sense in the prison system... On the public opinion debate, it shouldn't be that damn hard to sell the idea of cultivating career goals and some education to offenders, AS LONG AS we recognize the penal system still requires a debt paid to society... AND that's the crux of the U.S. prison systems biggest fail. It's in two parts... 1. Offenders have (as we're taught) a "debt to society"... Yet, we, the taxpaying public, are blowing away about 100,000 US dollars, per inmate, per year... SO where the hell is this debt getting paid? In days? I can't eat those, and they sure as hell don't put a dime in my pockets... 2. Rehabilitation... That was (at some point) the whole purpose for prisons... A penal system, yes, penalizes offenders... but it was supposed to be able to return those offenders to society (relatively safely) once their sentences were served... debt's paid... etc.... You're not bettering yourself in any way if all you do is sit in a box and stew about the shit and people who got you there... So, no... I can't say anyone sees rehabilitation actually happening in prisons... it's not even being attempted in a half-assed sense. Finally, this isn't something that's going to easily swing right around the way (or remotely close to) Norway's set up. In smaller steps, however, I think it wouldn't be out of the question to get non-violent and even lesser violent offenders (up to various lower degrees of assault and battery ish) into a program of education/training and cultivate something of a career oriented goal list for them while their inside... Could even use "on the job" training to get some necessary workmanship and skills together while doing something productive (damn near anything would be nice) for the outside society in return for the monstrous level of debt being racked up on our shoulders... At some level, there's just a certain point where someone is irredeemable. Maybe Norway can prove that wrong, but I (personally) have my doubts. Some offenders (at least from what I've seen in the records here) just aren't going to earn the modicum of trust investment necessary to approach a release date. If I can't afford it for them, I'm damned if I'm asking someone else to do it. And before someone starts bitching at me about capitol punishment, I'll happily invite you to "adopt" a capitol offender into your house, with your daughters and your family... ALL under YOUR sole responsibility. Think about that... :o)

@@tobiramasenju6290 parole is for people who go to prison. No I sat in jail because that's how long it takes for the court to figure out if you're guilty or innocent and to make a deal with the district attorney. I didn't even go to trial I just took a plea deal and was out the next day it took 7 months. You have to remember what I stole Doesn't matter and it doesn't matter that the garage door was left open doesn't matter that I didn't break into the home. What matters is is I went into the garage which is technically someone's home and that is a first degree felony a very serious charge. They ended up lowering it to a second degree which is why I got out after seven months.

Indeed they have great incentive for making sure as may of their customers return - just like any other business!! 2) Private prisons will do the VERY minimum they have to for the good of their inmates - their goal is to increase profits, not to serve the public in any way shape or form.3) Private prisons increase the possibility of corruption in the justice system, because their focus is money, not the good of the country.

I agree. As a former correctional officer of a men’s maximum security prison in Texas, this does make sense. Most officers treated the inmates like they weren’t human and would blatantly disregard any questions or concerns they had. In turn, those inmates were not chomping at the bit to be helpful nor listen and comply to those officers and any orders they’d given to the inmates. I took a different approach to my duties by being polite but firm, and respectful. I never had any major issues with any of those inmates and most of them were “lifers” meaning life without parole- the ones who were never getting out and had nothing to lose by being contemptible or troublesome. So many other officers had numerous issues with many, many inmates simply because they were absurdly rude and treated them inhumane just because they were prisoners. As a correctional officer, it is not your actual concern of why the inmate is there, it is your concern to keep them locked up, to keep them from killing themselves or anyone else, and to maintain safety and general day to day operations of the prison unit. I’m fairly certain that’s why I did not have hardly any problems out of nearly 3000 inmates that were at the prison where I used to work. A lot of people will say that it is because I am a small, dainty pretty woman; but I beg to differ. It’s because I treated them like a proper citizens, as humans. I gave respect for respect and it went very far in my regard.

I really appreciate you making a video on this topic, especially because your voice is reaching more than 2 million people around the world. The American justice system, and it's "incarcerate everyone" policies have deeply affected several people in my life. The horrible truth is that it is totally normal now for an average citizen to have known someone who has been imprisoned, or even been there themselves. A person makes one mistake, and they are thrown to the wolves for the rest of their lives. They will face judgment every where they go until they die, no matter if they end up "reformed" or not. The public needs to know that prison is often cruel (and in most cases not necessary) and ineffective, because the policies will not change until the People demand it. Prison is profitable, and the scum making money from it want as many people in cells as possible. Thanks Thoughty2! Here's hoping that the insights in your video make their way into all kinds of new minds.

Dude, I understand that once you're in the system, it's hard to get free again. Parole being a trap in itself. But I've been in twice, both on the same sentence. I got myself a job and a place to stay organized before I got out the last time, and I've been out of the system, no parole, for over 10 years. It's possible to get out of the system for good. I wish you all the best. It's a free labor market worldwide. Every country is doing it, prisons are profitable, rehabilitation isn't. Its F**ked

Yes. This is what he taught. Forgiveness and turning a persons heart with love. Its difficult to be the victim, but thr case of the Amish who lost their daughters to a mass shooting at a school, tells us the way we should be. I speak from experience of a person who experienced a horrible crime. When I finally accepted and forgave him, I wanted his heart to be softened, and find joy, and not do his crime again. He is a son of god with unlimited potential. Why would I not want the best for him? I still live with the results of his crime. But in the end, I will be reunited with loved ones, and I would rather he, the offender, be reabilitated and happy, growing, increasing in light and knowledge. This wont make sense to some, but as a bible and apocryphal scripture scholar, I understand the path we all take. We all offend others at different degrees, however, we learn and grow. We have Unlimited Potential. We stop growing, as do they, if we dont release the pain and anger. Your right, Jesus, as he was being murdered, asked the Father to forgive them, and claimed, “they no not what they do”. That is the pinnacle of forgiveness, understanding that if they got to a point of growth, given enough time and growth, they would not do those things. For my offender, he will get to the point of growth where put in the position, will not chose the same path. He needs forgiveness, and the opportunity to continue growth. I cant expect forgiveness if I cannot forgive. I want him to be loved, grow in love, and change. It may take more time then I can imagine. But we have a very narrow view of eternity. We place limits, from a misunderstanding of scripture, on God and his ways. Once you seek out all scripture of the prophets, thats available, that has the fingerprint of god on it (easy to recognize once you have read enough) finding it to be true scripture, the view changes and a Grand Plan for us comes into focus. Scripture has also been taken from Ancient Hebrew and Greek to the launguage we speak, changing the meaning or losing understanding. So your firm belief may be based on a misunderstood translation. Just know, there is more then just the short existence we have here. There is more then dying and sitting in heaven as a slave to god, sitting on a cloud or playing a harp. He is a God of Love. His greatest desire is to see us progress. Progession, without end. Unlimited potential. Constantly growing. Its a very narrow view to say we live once, are judged, and condemned for eternity to heaven or hell. We place a cap on Gods love when we believe this. As a mother or father, would we condemn our own children for thr circumstances and wrong choices they make? None of us would make it to adulthood if that were the case. God is our father, creator. He loves us more then we love our own. Wouldnt a father make a path for growth? Give us the chance to grow up completely? Satan fell because he was given all thr chances to grow, reached a point of complete knowledge, and still choose the wrong path, in front of god, knowing all. We are limited in knowledge here, going off of faith. We cannot be condemned without having full knowledge, and we dont have it here, for sure, without question. We argue over doctrine and understanding. We cannot be condemned until we reach a fullness of light and knowledge. But we can answer for our sins, ask Christ to forgive us, and move forward. If we expect forgiveness through Christ, we must extend it. For us, he said, we are to forgive all man. Only God can judge, and he unerstandeth all things. Forgivness releases that person to continue in their growth. Thats the Love Christ taught. We must live it, if we profess to believe in him. Yes, its hard, but we get better at forgiveness, and forgiving ourselves, as we learn to extend it. It is a journey. Be strong, defend virtue, but when called on, practice forgiveness, as he taught.
@youhaveinfinitevalue5755
@youhaveinfinitevalue5755 3 года назад
Justin Martin, I have read the Bible, and most Apocryphal writings. I understand your context, but it comes from a place of misunderstanding. He is the Prince of Peace. But he did defend rightousness, and the rightous. I had a man who took everything from me, including some children. I wont see them in this life again. But a point comes where his peace falls apon you, and you can forgive. I have. I want him to grow in love, light and knowledge. If Christ could ask his father to forgive the men that were in the act of murdering him in a horrific manner, then we too must learn forgiveness. Context is everything.

I just realised something. Their prison system works personally on the prisoners mental wellbeing, here's what got me, the school system in Norway is also promoting the same morals, less work, more personal lessons ect. I just wonder, could these two factors be linked? Edit: I just looked it up and Norway also legalised firearms. In fact they also have one of the largest firearm per person factors in the world. I suppose from a young age they aren't mentally traumatised, thus keeping a steady state of mind.

This reminds me of the Kurzgesagt video on War on drugs where Switzerland had an amazing solution in contrast to the US. The best way to keep a country healthy and safe is to take care of their citizens. Nobody is born evil, crime is a result of poverty and desperation. We need to provide mental support to one another and eliminate the need for one to abuse drugs, cause self harm,commit criminal acts and harm others. This way we ensure a long lasting and stable community filled with love and understanding.

I assure you I'm not high, at the moment at least, nor naive. I live in Croatia, I'm 19 years old. Social hierarchy is common in primates, which includes humans. Most of us lost for power and dominance above everybody else, it's a primal trait. People are greedy cause in today's day and age money represents power. Psychopaths are a results of mental neglect over a long period of time. A serial killer is only a serial killer when he kills 2+ people, when he was let's say 15, was he a serial killer then ? No. Does this mean that the deaths could have been prevented by helping the individual before he came to a state where he started killing ? Definitely. When a persons mental health takes a downwards spiral there is no telling what the individual is capable of doing. This is the soul reason why prisons just don't work. Instead of receiving help from professionals and getting your life back on track, you are instead punished and introduced to other criminals witch more knowledge and experience of crime. So when a person get's out of prison, he is more likely to commit crime again. If you had finished a sentence and are unable to get a job cause of it, your only other way to survive is to do crime. Again, NOBODY is born evil. Norway is not homogeneous, lol. Norway has a population of 5,258,000 , immigrants make 13% or 660,000. 335 000 (51%) have a Western background (Australia, New Zealand, North America, elsewhere in Europe) 325 000 (49%) have a non-Western background (Morocco, Iraq, Somalia, Pakistan, Iran). Get in touch with reality ;)

Nope, love has nothing to do with it. Compassion and basic human decency is more like it. We don't love criminals. In fact, many criminals lose all their family ties when they go to prison. I'd want to kill that bastard with my own hands, and anyone who are in such situation and tell their feelings are based in justice, are lying. So let me ask you this, when you in that situation want revenge, what good does it do you to know that the person is in prison? Nothing. It doesn't bring back anyone, and it can never inflict the same pain on that person and you don't get the gratification of inflicting pain yourself. The justice system is all about (in theory) getting offenders off the streets and over a longer timespan lowering crime rates. If someone who murdered my entire family can help be the reason that such crimes are lowered in the future, then that's the best sense of justice I can imagine. The individual is linked with revenge, but the act of imprissonment is linked with justice and betterment for society as a whole. Don't try to combine those two into the same act and don't treat it as similar feelings.
