NearFromHome has focused on daytrips in Oberbayern, but in this video we venture north, to Rothenburg ob der Tauber in the Franconia region of Germany. Come with us as we take the train from Munich for the weekend, discovering the famous dishes of this famous medieval town. We relax with some coffee and cake at a local Conditerei followed by more sweets at a Schneeballen bakery. Finally, we cap the night off, at Rothenburg's oldet building, Zur Höll, where we tray some local beer, roast beef, smoked sausages, and salmon.

Me and the wife are visiting Rothenburg this weekend....day trip. I can't wait to walk the town and experience all the medieval things Rothenburg has to offer. We have heard great things about this place and love to venture out when we have time. Lets hope for a good day with lots of good food, spectacular sights and fingers crossed for good weather.

I had the Zander (pike) in zur holl...was delish. Something you missed is the quirky potato trick some restaurants do there, ..cant remember the name but i and my friends referred to them as "snot balls". Pureed potato inside a boiled potato. Never tried one myself but a friend assured me theyre disgusting!! A lot of chinese tourists frequent Rothenburg, as theres a chinese kids cartoon set there... I was sat in a restaurant and saw some chinese tourists unwittingly order these culinary horrors. The looks on their faces on investigating the snotballs ,as the contents came running out was quite something. The trout "Millers wife" has to be tried, lovely local fish baked in a herb mix. Unlike Britain, the germans eat carp. One way it is served is in strips covered in batter which is delicious. Another i tried just once,and took all my reserve to eat is blue carp, a whole fish curled on the plate as if it was leaping, boiled. Yuk!!! The town is a fairy tale, beautiful and well worth a visit,but i hate to tell you that the reason it looks so well preserved is that most of the town was rebuilt after an american bomber which, having failed to find its target, dropped its payload on the town wrecking a good two thirds of the buildings and some of the walls. Whoops!! Myself, i dont think that detracts from its magical charm.

I HAD ASPARAGUS SOUP FOR THE FIRST TIME THERE AND FELL IN LOVED WITH IT. I ALSO HAD A LARGE PIECE OF BLACK FOREST CAKE. I AGREE, THE LIQUOR TASTE WAS OVERPOWERING- GOOD BUT STRONG FLAVOR.

Rothenburg is in Bavaria. Nurnberg is best known for its out of this world bratwurst! Ansbach has great Rolladen too.

We have done a video about Mittenwald, but we didn’t include any food, aside from an ice cream cafe we really like on the Main Street. We also wanted to feature the brewery, but it was closed 😭

I've been to Rothenberg ob der Tauber only twice and nearly 50 years between visits. The town is wonderful and you didn't mention the famous altarpiece by Tillman Riemenschneider--famous woodcarver from Wuerzburg. He was a true master of his craft as well as a revolutionary against the nobility of his day. I don't recall where I ate there in 1964, but it too, was excellent. There is another altar in Creglingen. A suggestion for another video is Weikersheim. and the Baroque palace is astounding; all the interior furnishings are intact and were donated by the local Count's heirs to the state of Wuertemburg-Baden or a museum.

Schneebälle are not offcuttings but the dough is that typical sweet pie/cookie dough (always sugar, butter, flour) which is deep fried (former times lard). The dough can have aromatics, can be covered and sprinkled with different things. In other parts of Germany you might get something different when you order a dish/ pastry with that name. But I also found it at a Berlin Christmas market though. Take care
@katrinlausch3078
@katrinlausch3078 2 года назад
Btw the recipe is old (over 300years)

We were attempting to say that Schneeballen remind us of pie off cuttings. The sentiment was kinda lost in the edit. oops! it's cool that it is such an old staple of German xmas traditions.

We visited Zur Hoell last night, servers were very rude and 2 dishes with three small 0.3L beers was 68 euro. Expect to be seated at an empty table and told to wait around 40 minutes for other diners to finish before you can order, even if you have a reservation. They also charge for water and bread which is crazy…
@NearFromHome
@NearFromHome 5 месяцев назад
all of that except for charing for the bread sounds like eating at a restaurant in Europe.
@Mick-Ozz
@Mick-Ozz Месяц назад
you pay for drinking water in Germany... luckily the Hefeweizen is usually cheaper. Germany servers often come across as being rude, but it's not to be taken personally.. it's just a different culture :) So too for the waiting, sporadic serving times and so on... Monty python once made a little skit called "Bavarian Restaurant" - I always keep this in mind if I'm eating out in Rothenburg and then it doesn't feel quite so annoying 😉

@@Mick-Ozz thanks for your info but it is not applicable to our mistreatment. We have been and lived several countries abroad (are fluent in 5 languages together) and can tell when people are being churlish. They were exceptionally rude to us here. Did I mention she yelled at us for arriving at the “wrong time” and when we showed her our confirmation email that we arrived at the correct time she just walked away? Last time I checked, 6pm means 6pm, not 7pm. Then she made us wait at an empty table for almost an hour until 7pm without offering us anything, not even water…They were both beyond rude and the food was subpar. Also, instead of just apologizing for their actions, the shameless owner lied several times to google to try to have my review taken down, I won the several appeals as she kept changing her reasoning with more lies.

Hi guys, pleased to have discovered your great videos! I’m interested to know what your coffee was like when you had the coffee and cake please? Do they offer choices of milks, as I am vegan and prefer almond milk. I know in other parts of Europe you are lucky to even have a choice of soy milk, but what is the situation in Rothenburg and Germany in general please? Cheers from Marg in Australia!
@NearFromHome
@NearFromHome 2 года назад
I actually also prefer almond milk. I can’t remember if they offer it at this place specifically. In my experience, most cafes have a few milk substitute options. Usually the cafes that are more modern and trendy have many milk options. Sometimes the old school looking ones won’t.

As you wanted some "Tipps " for other towns to go to, one town I was really surprised a🎉bout is Amberg in the Oberpfalz. I was on my way to Nürnberg and stopped off here to have a quick stroll not knowing what to expect. I liked it so much that I ended up staying fir the whole day and didn't go to Nürenberg after all.
