The vast majority of Sierran Leoneans - 80 percent in fact - are under 35. But is the government doing enough to empower this young generation? DW's Edith Kimani asks young Sierra Leoneans if they feel powerful enough to make their mark on the global stage.

These are very brilliant set of people, I must say the speeches are well delivered very clear, confident and straight to the point. I want to believe there are many more brilliant minds down there in Sierra Leone. Haja I am so in respect and awe of your thought process. Yes we need to compete locally first. The misguided arrogance of always comparing our situation and productivity to UK and Europe or America is like a feather weight wanna be boxer who doesn't even understand the rules of boxing, challenging a heavyweight champion. It's suicidal at best. We must learn to have a sense of grandeur from within first. I feel really encouraged by you all. I look forward to engaging you all in my projects. Bless

Great point. Our continent had no 1st, 2nd or 3rd industrial revolution, yet we are busy talking about the 4th industrial revolution. The entrepreneurship and innovations of Telsa, Microsoft etc. couldn't exist without the prior industrial revolutions. We can't ignore the basics before we reach for the stars. We tend to focus on the top 20% of the population and neglect the 80% majority. Focusing on a few major cities and ignoring 90% of our countries. Access to education and basic infrastructure/services for all will take tour countries a very long way, and open up loads more opportunities for innovation even in rural areas.

One of the ways to empower the youth faster is to invest in a large trade and technical school where you can train many architects where you can build houses all around the country, auto mechanics , electricians , carpenters , and many other skills . Also an agriculture school where you can train farmers in all variety of live stocks and planting of food, With those basic schools your country will develop fast. That's how America, England , and Europe and all advance countries develop . God Bless. . Contact the Black College Tuskegee University, Alabama for ideas. USA.

Quite an interesting program here. Generally, I'm impressed. As a young Sierra Leonean, myself, I'd say there's still hope for things to change for the better in this country if we work as empowered young people to support impoverished or less fortunate youths to come on board. Inclusive development is the only way out. Everyone can be useful in their own way. Discrimination should never be part of our vocabulary as young people in development.

Unfortunately people fail to understand that you can’t help everybody. Not Even in first world countries. Poor countries cannot model themselves on rich countries as well as poor households cannot model themselves on rich ones. The productive labor is not there in the continent of Africa. You need the masses of the people working in different segments of industry either by choice or force unfortunately. First any household or country has to have is productive activity in it’s sustenance areas ....food, water, clothing and shelter. Once a productive system is designed to meet these, then it can free other segments and people to be free from day to day toil and grow and build new ideas. Africa largely has a labor problem, people only want to work if they can buy stuff instead of investment in their children’s future. So that’s why you should look out for yourself self if you are still poor, get rich then go back and see what you can do. Not try to find solutions for the problems of the masses when you are still poor yourself. Because they ain’t gonna want to follow your lead, so do you!

Youth employment in sierra Leone it is always difficult to achieve because, when resource are available to support youth that get the knowhow, those resources wil only penetrate to those youth with political influence falling to acknowledge those with creative innovations. In short, political interference in youth empowerment is a fundamental problem.which need to be address. Most youth that are having the opportunity to study abroad or even the local scholarship are either close relative to those in ruling government or who's parents are working with the ministry of education.

This is very good and very important debate am seriously impressed by this young people. Now if we have a country like sierra Leone which as become independent since 1961 up to date which has never able to have 24 hours electric 💡 again think about the roads , what about health care. Again I was thinking during the 80s when they are promising bridge access to Lungai airport. Again I went to Dakar in Senegal I have spent almost a year I never experienced or see any street without electricity and why Sierra Leone my brothers and sisters what actually wrong here? If I may from Siaka Stevens into president Maada Bio. And why till now we don't have a system for all this things to be first priority for the county? We can wish, we can pray but same time we have to go out start something in other to achieve big for the present and coming generation. Love you all ❣️
