Does South Korea Have The Best Moral Society in the World? 

Korea has an incredible societal moral system, in my opinion! I have traveled to many countries and I can't find a moral system like Korea's...(It may exist, but I haven't experienced yet hahaha). What do you all think?! Here's the article in Korean about the girls and the card: naver.me/GudZEy90

in 1997 I got off the bus in Seoul late for my teaching job. I jogged hurriedly towards my class and some older guy caught up to me and had my wallet in his hand, I had dropped it when I got off the bus. Funny part is he was giving me crap for not hearing him shout me down, he was probably 58 years old I couldn't believe he actually ran up to catch me.

To be honest, these moral aspects were so natural in Korea from a young age that I grew up without even knowing that this was something to be proud of and grateful for.

I can relate to your story. I once visited my in-laws in South Korea. They insisted on paying for all expenses during our visit. On the date of departure at Inchon airport, I gave a lump of cash to my mother in law to show my gratitude. It was about 1k in cash. She forgot about it and left it at the airport inside of her pulse. I reported the incident at the airport lost and found. No one returned. I told them I'm giving up on them and perhaps someone else needed that cash more than us with a bitter smile. The lady there, looking surprised by my reaction, told me to leave contact and give time. I gave her my in law's mobile. And we left Korea shortly after. When we landed in LAX to transfer, i got a message from my in law that she was able to find the pulse with all the cash inside. I honestly did not expect it so I was humbled by the experience.

I lived in South Korea for 54 years. But I think, at least for me, South Korea is like heaven. Of course, this does not mean that there is no crime at all. Even when I was in elementary and middle school, I wandered around alone at night, watched movies, and came home at 10 or 11 p.m. But I have never felt scared at all. It's real. It's not a lie. Of course, when I became an adult, I would wander around 24 hours a day, day or night, drink as much as I wanted, hang out with my friends all night, and go to bed the next morning. When I feel frustrated alone, I go fishing. I set up a tenter in the countryside where almost no one goes, sleep, eat, and fish alone for two or three days and then come back. Still, I don't think it's scary at all. Because it's not just me. Because there are many other people who enjoy vacations like me. In 54 years, I have never experienced a crime other than someone stealing my bike when I was in college. I've never even been pickpocketed. Of course, this does not mean that there are no pickpockets or scammers. Even though it's almost 9 o'clock in the evening, elementary school students are still playing on the playground below my apartment. What are the good things about South Korea? If you are an adult, you can drink alcohol whenever and wherever you want at a cheap price. Now it's 9 o'clock in the evening. Even during this time, you can go to the convenience store whenever you want, buy alcohol and food, sit at the table in front of the convenience store, and drink as much as you like. It means no one interferes. But almost nothing bad happens. Isn’t it fascinating?

I once left my wallet on a game at a bustling arcade is Seoul and didn’t realize until trying to pay for lunch several hrs later that it was missing. I raced back to the arcade and it was still there, exactly where I had left it. As someone from the U.S., this was culture shock for me. Lol

Many foreigners think it's because of CCTV, but it's not because they were taught not to covet others from an early age. A history that values humanity and morality.

As a whole… yeah… as a native Korean that grew up in the US, i found it strangely odd how its that way. Even the things strangers do for you when they are getting impatient, instead of complaining they just rather help you do it faster or just even take care of it for you. And they go on their way as if it was no big deal.

I live in small town in Utah, and there have been two occasions when I left my wallet full of cash in a shopping cart and went back to find it an hour later. Both time, I was able to retrieve it. I'm not sure about big cities, but the place where I live in Utah is honest and safe, and I really like it.

I remember Samsung, a Korean company, got a lot of criticism when they posted a European ad showing a woman jogging alone at dawn. In Seoul, people go out to the Han River or parks to exercise at dawn.

Korean people are truly admirable people. I have so much respect for Korean people. Honorable people.

There was a Korean news segment not too long ago that showed a man riding a bicycle down an alleyway (in Seoul?) and dropped something like the equivalent of $10K USD (or some huge amount) in cash on the ground and a high school student found it while walking to or from school and turned it into the police. It was all captured on CCTV both her finding it and handing it over to the police officers in the Korean police station👍. Still, like you said, there are issues plaguing Korean society and the rest of the world but stuff like this helps restores my faith in society.💪

That story about the teenagers who returned the credit card is incredible. I once heard a story from a foreigner who was amazed he saw a group of students in a coffee shop leave behind their laptops, phones, and valuables. They came back an hour or so later and no one had touched any their things. I think this honesty is rooted in Korean Confucianism or Buddism maybe? These values and generosity are reflected all over K dramas, but it is not a product you can just export and sell. You can't preach to those who won't listen and have different values, upbringing, and culture. I really wish we could though.

this level of morality, write /wrong understanding is truly admirable. we in the West can only dream on......

I was born in south korea in the 80s. As soon as you begin school...youre not just taught respect and respect for people around you but you are taught to respect the things of others around you. In schools, youre taught to keep it clean and youre assigned in a group per day to clean the classrooms before going home. it starts young...something that American school systems really lacks.

There is a saying: If your father is a thief, in Japan, he passes down a manual to his son that explains how to steal well. In China, even if the father is not a thief, he teaches his son that people who are good at deceiving others are smart(you can understand why if you have read Sun Tzu's Art of War, a classic that the Chinese are proud of) Meanwhile, in Korea, even if a father is a thief, he will beat his son if he steals something from someone else.

Having lived in Korea for over a decade, I've grown accustomed to leaving my wallet and laptop on the table at a cafe, stepping away to use the restroom or to have a smoke, and returning to find my belongings untouched. Once, I even left my wallet in a bathroom at a highway gas station and retrieved it the next day, undisturbed. The respect for personal property is such that people refrain from taking what's not theirs. Consequently, the crime rate is so low that minor offenses make headlines as if they were major incidents.

Their value system is likely deeply ingrained in Korea's collective consciousness culturally and is derived from Buddhism and Confucianism, which emphasizes upholding righteousness and the moral disposition to do good. Growing up in Korea, one of the most important things that I was taught was to share everything with everyone. An old saying says, "You should share even if you have only a pea." Also, many Koreans are likely taught about the notion of karma growing up, such as what goes around and what comes around. Thus, many Koreans may do good to others, believing their action can benefit them in the long run. And others simply do good to others because it makes them feel good about themselves. For instance, Korean society emphasizes (even though it may be gradually changing) modesty, maturity, humility, and integrity, unlike Western society, which emphasizes assertiveness, confidence, and individuality. In addition, exceptional material abundance achieved in modern times in such a short period also may have contributed to their sense of having enough and no need to take anything from others. Nonetheless, Koreans are not more moral than other ethnics. I believe many Koreans have good work ethics. Most Koreans believe that working hard will reward them in abundance, which is mostly true for many Koreans (this may be slowly changing, too). Thus, stealing or taking things from others is counterintuitive to them. With that said, back in the old days, when Koreans were poor, there was pickpocketing, robberies, and conning like in any other places in the world that are prevalent with a sense of victimhood that "I am deprived of my right to have an abundance, or I am a victim of system or circumstances. Such a mindset allows one to take others' wealth and feel justified since they believe they are victims. The feeling of deprivation and victimhood is derived from dissatisfaction with one's life, distrust in others, and disconnection with each other. But humanity has come a long way in building trust and cooperating, which is the only solution to most of our problems in the world. All of us on this planet are on the path to learning and growing to be more trusting, cooperative, and understanding each other. As we become global citizens, increasing our understanding of the psychology behind stealing and taking from others, each individual will become more open to reaching out to people who are isolated and feeling deprived. As a result, we will elevate our collective consciousness of the earth. The only reason we are here is to understand and learn to love each other unconditionally.

We have been educated like that if you did bad things such as taking someone's stuff you will be punished in various ways through time, if not, your offspring will be.

When I was in elementary school, my younger brother picked up a wallet on the street, took it home, got slapped by my dad, and my father let my brother walk by himself to bring the wallet to the police station, which was a 20-minute walk away. I think when it comes to human behavior, the education we get at home at an early age is more important than school education. I also grew up always being told not to touch other people's belongings. Saying like your things are precious to you, so are others.

Thank you for acknowledging the positive aspects and spreading the word. As a Korean American living in the States, I am proud of Korea's progress, despite my reservations about the current president and his posse. I believe Koreans should be global leaders because, as you mentioned, both good and bad influences can spread easily. I think people are starting to recognize and appreciate Korean values and will continue to learn from them. In today's harsh and challenging world, this recognition is both necessary and inevitable.

I also got my lost wallet found my a man who was walking in the same park I was where I had lost it. Funny thing was, I didn’t even know I had lost it till he had call me the day after. *There had been some receipt with my phone number in the wallet. Living in Seoul, I lost my wallet like 4 times and 3 times I got it back.

The only way this works is if everyone feels like part of the same society, has the same core values, and follows the same rules. In the West, that's largely impossible due to multiculturalism (everyone having different values), an extreme focus on individualism, increasing income inequality, and the lack of a sense of "we're all part of the same team". It's a major advantage in a relatively equal, culturally homogenous society such as Korea or Japan.

I had the similar experience in NJ, USA. I left behind my wallet in a NJ port authority bus and then later day, I could find it at lost+found at the office in the bus terminal lot.

First of all, thank you for praising our morality as a Korean. Sometimes Koreans are impressed, too. Last year, I climbed up the mountain behind my home, took a rest, and on my way down, I realized that I had left my sunglasses somewhere. So I thought about going back to find it, but I just came home because I was so tired. Then, I climbed the mountain again about a month later. What I found at the top was that my sunglasses, which were lost a month ago, were hanging from a branch of a large tree for easy finding! They were expensive sunglasses but were hanging from a branch of a tree that stood out for the owner to take them with him later on. Of course, no one would have paid attention... I couldn't believe it at first, but when I came down and showed the sunglasses to my family, they were all surprised. Some of you may not believe this, so I will not emphasize that it was real. But every time I wear the sunglasses, I don't know who it is, but I thank the person who found them and hung them on a tree branch!

When cameras were becoming popular, Korea did a social experiment by leaving wallets, purses or shopping bags on the buses and trains to see how many people would take the items. 98% returned the items and the other 2% turned it in to lost and found. Nobody stole anything. It was quite surprising to me. That was a long experiment. I had to come back in the middle of the video because you mention it. You are correct.

When I was an elementary school student in the mid-1990s, I lived in Yeouido, and as you know, Yeouido is the center of Korea's financial industry. At noon, the streets were filled with finance people who had come out to have lunch. One day, I was holding my mom's hand and waiting for the traffic light to change at the crosswalk at an intersection, and my mother said to me, "When you grow up, you should not walk around with your wallet in the back pocket of your pants like those people." I saw that there were quite a few men standing with their wallets in the back pockets of their pants. These days, there are no pickpockets in Korea, but back then, pickpockets existed but not common though. And at the time, CCTV was only available in banks, and it was not digital, but low-quality VCR.

오래전에 술먹고 전철타고 귀가하다가 잠들었는데 일어나보니 핸드폰이 사라졌더라구요. 역무원 핸드폰을 빌려 전화했는데 어디로 어디로 찾으러오라고 하더니 결국은 돌려주지 않았어요 아주 악질적인 사람을 만났었죠. 그러고 몇년후 버스정류장 의자에 떨어져있던 누군가의 휴대폰을 발견했는데 지하철에서 잃어버렸을때 그 황망한 기분이 생각나서 혹시 그분도 악질적인 사람을 만나지 않을까 노파심에 타야할 버스도 보내버리고 근처 경찰서에 걸어가서 휴대폰 주었다고 신고하고 놓고왔어요.

한국인들만 있을때는 그랬는데 불법체류자가 50만명에 육박하고 중국인이 100백만명이상 살고 총 외국인. 300백만 정도 사는것같은데 이제는 조금씩 조심해야 합니다

좋든 싫든 한국은 유교문화가 뿌리 깊게 자리 잡고 있어요. 유교 최고의 교리가 인간의 도덕성 함양입니다. 카페에서나 지하철에서나 어디에서나 남의 물건이 떨어져 있을 때 그걸 갖고 싶은 생각이 별로 안 들어요. 왜 인지는 모르겠으나 그냥 그래요. 내가 아주 도덕적으로 뛰어나다라고 생각 하지도 않거든요. 내가 물욕이 없냐? 그것도 아닙니다. 난 좋은 물건 가지고 싶거든요. 단지 내 것이 아닌 것에는 물욕이 없죠. "cctv가 있으니 내가 남의 물건을 가져가면 잡힐지도 몰라, 그러니 훔치면 안돼."이런 생각하는 사람 있나요? 나는 그런 생각 해본 적 단 한번도 없는데... 이게 어릴 때부터 받아온 교육 때문인지, 사회적인 분위기인지, 사실 이런 분석도 해본 적이 없어서 이런 영상 볼 때마다 생각해보기는 하는데, 결정적인 이유가 무엇이다라고 말하기 참 힘드네요. 첫 줄에서 언급했듯이 굳이 분석하자면 유교적인 밈이라고 할 수도 있는 것 같고, 하지만 70-80년대에 소매치기 절도범 많았거든요. 이런 거 보면 헷갈리기도 하네요. 아마 지금은 먹고살만한 해서 절도가 그리 경제적 효율성이 없다고 생각도 듭니다. 훔치는 효용이 훔치는 비용보다 작다는 것이죠.

I think most Koreans regardless of their religions believe in this Karma system. "If I did something wrong, it will eventually get back to me in any shape or form" kinda thinking is ingrained. So most of people if they were not treated badly in their childhood tend to behave towards not making wrong choices and always acting with good intentions. Even those who were harmed in their childhood most of them think the bad probably happened cuz of their bad karma from the previous life or lives of their close family or relatives. Also there's tengrism relating to all system of natural balance of ying and yang, family orientedness and respect for elders and wisdom. Somehow, most of them believe in this system through collective cultural experience. However, this tendency towards high morality is only sustainable in the society of rational gov't system and considerable wealth. Luckily Korea hit all those boxes against all odds. I think foreigners with good intentions and high morality play one part too. If Koreans were not seen, amongst us we might have not selected to change ourselves towards the better. As we are watched and maybe being scrutinized , I believe our somewhat embarrassing tendency for the elite to manipulate the less fortunate is being suppressed. Anyways, Buddha once said "everything changes, so always keep alert and do your best". Korean society's today is only transient and constant efforts are needed to make it sustained or improved.

Love how you cover the topic through the eyes of a "wei-guk-in"! I wonder how much of the undercurrent of morality is embedded in many K-drama's....creating part of the appeal to audiences outside of Korea. Not that I've watched a ton--and notwithstanding the more grotesque versions of the genre.

I dropped my Samsung Galaxy wireless earphones while falling asleep on Seoul Subway Line 6. After a while, I realized I had lost them and tracked them down with SmartThings. They were near the last station on the subway line. The next day, I visited the station office at the final station and found my earphones there. So I came and had a good day.

1;12 that's the least of it. They have "cooling centers" where people can go spend the hottest part of the day if they lack AC.

I guess you know, but I would offer you to jog around Dorim stream. You can reach up to the Han river along the stream if you haven't.

나라의 건국이념이" 널리 인간을 이롭게 하라"는 것인데 한국엔 전통적으로 상부상조라고해서 서로 돕고 살아야한다는 개념이 있다. 어릴적에 서로 이웃집일을 도와주는 어른들을 직접 보고 자라서 지금 어른이 되었고 아직도 문화적으로 부조라고 해서 기쁜일, 슬픈일을 서로 돌봐주는 문화가 있다.

Being Korean myself, I wouldn't call it inherently moral. It's more like a practical way of life here, a kind of unspoken rule that leads to self-censorship. Korean society can sometimes feel a bit like a close-knit insect community. Have you ever noticed how Koreans seem to instinctively adjust their communication style depending on who they're talking to? It's like we have a built-in radar for social hierarchy. We understand our place in a group and act accordingly. That buit-in radar is used in various situations. It can be a physical thing. We know our position physically. and constantly cares about others nearby. We are moving CCTV. That constant adapting and self-censoring abilty to fit into the group is viewed by outsiders as moral behaviour. But I think it's not. It's just a code of conduct. Individual morality is the whole lot of different thing. I think that balanced self-censoring attitude of individuals makes a healthy society. But Korean 'moral behavior' is somewhat too much. It's gnawing to the core of individuals for the good of the group.

"Do not fix your shoelaces in the cucumber field.Do not tie your hat under the pear tree" a Korean idiom. my parents sometimes said this to their children, and I sometimes say this to my children

Thanks for sharing your insight and experience! South Korea definitely has ton of honest people compared to many other countries. I think only other country that would be close or potentially higher in value system- might be Japan. Other than that..hard to think of other country to compare to. But - SK rocks overall though in friendliness and compassion compared to Japan.

Koreans are disciplined, honest, and they are full of integrity. To the point they leave their phones or wallets on their table when they leave, to *protect their seats* in a cafe. But when it comes to bikes it's a different story.

You forgot to mention Korean films also. I am so jealous you can easily find sikye. I can only find it in cans and it's nowhere near as good as fresh. You're from Atlanta - isn't heat in your blood?

If you find an unattended credit card or wallet on the street, pick it up and give it to a police man or drop it off at a police station, They will find the owner.

요즘 해외에서 한국으로 소매치기 원정단이 온다고 합니다. 우리나라도 90년대까지 소매치기가 많았음.

굳이 생각은 안해봤는데 옆에 남의 물건 있으면 누가 놓고 갔네 말고는 딱히 아무 생각이 안드네요 내꺼 아닌데 뭐 이 정도 생각? 왜 그런지는 모르겠는데 그냥 그럼…어렸을때부터 남 물건 훔치는 거나 피해주는거 하면 집에서 엄청 혼나서 그런가? 한국에선 남의 물건 훔치면 부모님이 자기 자식 취급도 안할 정도로 혼내는게 보통이니까 ㅋㅋㅋ

많은 나라를 다녔지만 목숨이 위태로운적이 몇번있어서 그냥 안전한 한국이 최고인것같아요 한국과 다른나라의 문화적인 차이의 근본은 홍익인간 정신이 조상 대대로 이어져 내려온것이라 생각합니다 "널리 인간세상을 이롭게 하라” "모든 사람들이 어우러져 행복하게 하라"

나는 술먹고 퇴근하다 휴대폰을 10번 넘게 버스나 지하철에 두고 내렸지만, 전부 다 되찾았다. 버스회사가 보관하고 있다가 주인에게 되돌려 준다.
