I'm so glad someone finally asked him this question. I've been curious about it for ages.

I always loved Sylvester's Dark "Sorcerer" incarnation of the Doctor! Manipulating Ace as his hidden weapon (ala Battlefield). And I loved the interplay with Sophie Aldred's Dorothy "Ace" McShane. How she called him Professor, and after getting her blown up, he'd brush her down and Bop her on the nose like mad but likeable Uncle! 🤔

Yeah he does the dark so well, doesn't he.

YESSS i always loved that too. SOOO incredibly wholesome and i love how he had been basically one of the very few positive male rolemodels in Ace's life and really caring for her. It was sooo absolutely appropriate and this is why this companionship is still my favorite of the whole Doctor Who run.

I love how Sylvester still watches the show. No idea if Peter does; I know Colin does.

If there's a dark Big Finish Doctor Who Story Sylvester's Seventh Doctor is always my favourite Doctor. Night Thoughts is a fantastic Story. Enjoyed interview

Night Thoughts is wonderful. Hopefully you caught our recent chat about that story with Lizzie Hopley?

McCoy seems like the kind of man you could sit down and enjoy an good conversation with, regardless of being Who content or not. Also loving his round glasses, wanted something like that for years.

This was a very fun listen! Definitely agree with your sentiments with this Doctor (I kind of wish Jodie's Doctor had more of this too). Thanks for the video

From seeing the clown 7th version and the darker doctor, I think I prefer the mysterious darker doctor as it seems to suit him more and it felt more enjoyable, I watched the greatest show in the galaxy & obviously that was more focused on comedy doctor, but I felt the writing in that episode didn’t compliment his doctor then. However in Curse of Fenric & Happiness Patrol I really enjoyed what he did in those performances, and him being more serious.

It's the fact that Seven is both the clown and the dark manipulator that makes him so interesting really
@WimpyKelv12

Purely clownish makes him seem shallow, purely manipulative makes him too unlikable (a criticism some people have about how far he goes in the EU).

i think the 7th doctor needs to be in a special and not just a cameo or audio book more like 15th running unexpectedly into wibbley wobbley timey wimey stuff that could cause the doctors to switch places even possibly causing the scramble of the two tardis console rooms

Love the 7th Doctor so this isn't a reflection on that character at all, but Moffat says a lot of shit about Doctor Who and a lot of it is just that - shit. Moffat is always going on about how the effects never convinced anyone in classic Who and "we all knew it was rubbish" or how the writing and the acting was never particularly good and how it's all a bit embarrassing. So it's not remotely surprising his version of the show took the piss of not just itself so much but of it's past even more (how can you watch Twice Upon Time's 1st Doctor putting on those sonic shades and not get that it's taking the piss of the character). But Moffat's dead wrong, we didn't all "know it was rubbish" and the acting and writing was frequently very strong, but Moffat has never thought that. He always sends it up, it's always a knowing wink and a joke. His era is constantly meta constantly 'funny' and it just lost it's own self respect. His version of the Doctor isn't the character "the Doctor", it's kids tv hero "Dr Who". Because y'know that's 'clever' and not as simple as it would otherwise be. It goes back to the 90s with Moffat's comments about how bad the show was and how supposedly terrible everyone working on it was at their jobs - the guy is too pretentious for a show like Doctor Who. And his take on the show completely lost whatever was left of it's original incarnation and I don't think he'd see that as a bad thing. He just sees what's 'supposed' to be good tv and what's 'supposed' to be bad. So McCoy got development and a dramatic dynamic with Ace, therefore they're 'more developed' than the eras before them. It's as simple as that to Moffat. Because Doctor Who can't just be Doctor Who, it has to tick all those boxes to be accepted into the space of 'good tv'. The guy can write for sure, but he's still every bit the embarrassed fan he was in the 90s.

Steven Moffat I found that as his time as writer his writing successes was very mixed, with different episodes I loved Matt Smith’s run that was a good casting, I don’t really think Peter Capaldi was amazing, his acting seemed to suit more serious storylines, Capaldi was mediocre, but series 8 was atrocious. I think I would have gone for a different doctor he wasn’t the best but wasn’t the worst. If Moffat came back with RTD that would be an interesting writing combination again.
