Actually they ‘predicted’ the end of their calendar by the way their calendar worked. It no more predicted the end of the world than your 2023 calendar ending on December 31 predicts the end of the world. It actually means you need a new calendar. It’s like if the Gregorian calendar could only have 4 digits because of the way it was set up when it was created, that wouldn’t predict the end of the world at the end of 9999, it would just predict you would need to buy a new 10,000 year calendar.

Times have always been bad. It's just that today we got TV, we got 24 hour newscasts, we got news feds on the internet. Everyday we hear about bad things all around. So of course it looks like we're living in the worse of times. But it really isn't any worse than in previous decades. For example, in the 1950s the world was probably just as worse as today, but it seemed peaceful because most people only had one TV with 5 channel and news broadcasts that only lasted half an hour. To the people who were alive in the 1950s the world was peaceful because at least for them, the world seemed peaceful. They weren't accustomed to the constant negative news we're so used to today.

Obviously he didn’t bring about the end of times so he’s not THE guy but the template is there.
