Killswitch Engage is well known for using the NS-2 and in a peculiar manner that works really well. Before switching over to Kempers, they'd use the NS-2 with an additional noise gate. The NS-2 would 4-cable method around their overdrives only, as you've shown around the HM-2, but then they'd put an additional noise gate in the amp's loop, like a regular ISP Decimator or whatever to get rid of the extra hiss. So basically, you'd set the NS-2 how you'd want it for rhythm, and with the NS-2's gate closed, then set the other gate to close off the remaining hiss from the amp. The benefit to this is to be able to get a super tight response from the NS-2 for rhythm, but then be able to switch it off for leads, while still having the more gentle gate in the loop. You could also shut off the NS-2 to be able to do stuff like rolling the volume back on the guitar, or if you had the NS-2 off during a lead or whatever, if you set the 2nd gate just right, it could still cut off the signal completely. Periphery also used this method, presumably copied from KSE, before they switched to AxeFx's. On another note... I still haven't messed with the following feature, but the Bear Amps Heavier Metal has a loop on it designed to place a noise gate in the ideal position in the signal chain of the pedal. I'm not sure, but it might deactivate the noise gate when you switch the Heavier Metal off. One might be able to add an EQ or something else in that loop too.

END does this with their swollen pickles. They run those through a Zuul+ and they have another gate in the loop.

Great video! You're the only video I saw that correctly explains the Mute parameter. Most players go to Reduction parameter and overlook the Mute for getting sharp chugs or tight rhythm. As you show here, Mute parameter is always active on the signal, but when you engage the footswitch it acts like a killswitch. This is a great feature and I'm using it this way. Thanks!!!

Thanks so much for this, I thought something was wrong with my NS-2, but both both of these methods worked for me, the 2nd being much more effective

With the HM-2, I use method 2 but reduce the HM2 LVL to 50%. This helps the NS2 noise gate far better and doesn’t effect the chainsaw tone.

The second method is what my band uses to tame our guitarist's HM-2. Works perfectly for us.

To have a less noisy HM-2 it might be an idea to power it with the battery instead of the adapter. Once i found this i can say you can even use it without any type of noise gate. Obiouvsly i still use my NS-2 (with the method 2, i have a valvestate 8100 and it have a really shitty FX loop so i don't wanna use it at all and play everything in front) because i like to have really clean stops. Trust me, it changes the game. Side note: what you've said at min 4:27 about the send and return of the NS-2 is really a piss off, you easily go to the input of the pedal you want to insert but, going back in the return is a nightmare and you always end up either with long cables flying around or really strange pedal positions if you're using patch cables... definetly a turn off about the NS-2

I use 66 pedals wired up as 3 separate boards linked to a switcher. I am currently using 5 noise gates. I was using 2 of the Boss a couple of years back but they are outdated. The best is probably my REVV G8 , it is totally transparent but using 4 knobs is a pain since I have to adjust it between tunes. My favorite is the SMG Cock Blocker of which I have 2. It does not do that dead cut off thing but it is otherwise perfect. It has one knob so changing it for different pedals or even stacked pedals is literally 2 seconds.Unfortunately they were a limited edition so I almost was too late to get a second or I would have bought a third.

Do you have a Lone Wolf Audio Endless Blockade?
@XChristianNoirX
@XChristianNoirX 2 года назад
@@dq7860 I have it and the Deadweald Golem.. But I have so many priorities, I haven't even plugged them in yet. The gate in the Duality Dx works great though... The thing I personally hate about gates is that the buffers in them change your tone. I've tried a lot of gates, and this is pretty much a universal problem... Dofderent gates might also work with different pedals better or worse. I think the Dulity's gate is so good because it's part of the pedal itself. If you don't use 4cm with the loop, and just gate the pedal, it doesn't really mess with your tone because it's not using additional buffers. Also, it's probably been tuned to the pedal itself. Whatever the case, when the gate is built into the pedal, you either like the whole pedal or you don't. When you add a gate to other pedals, it changes your tone, even if just a bit, so it can be a drag. In digital land, this is not usually a problem.. In analog world, it is, because of the buffers, impedance changes, and the chips themselves. For people who like using buffers or active pickups, it might be less of an issue... With actives, there already is a buffer in the pickup itself. But if you use passive and hate buffers, more than likely, noise gate pedals will have the same effect. I'm not sure but with the HM-2, the NS-2 might not be a bad bet because at least the pedals and buffers in them are form the same company, so theoretically, they should play well together.

@dq7860 2 года назад
@@XChristianNoirX I can't remember whether the Endless Blockade was buffered or not but it doesn't seem to change my tone at all.
@XChristianNoirX
@XChristianNoirX 2 года назад
@@dq7860 The Endless Blockade is based on the same circuit as the Fortin ZUUL, because it uses the same exact chip, and their circuits are based on the design the chip manufacturer themselves supplied. That's not to say the pedals are identical, because some adjustments may have been made by Lone Wolf and Fortin, like certain values for attack /brelease etc, MD the components are probably different. There are also 2cm and 4cm versions of both of these gates. The ZUUL+ might use a different chip though... I'm not sure. I do know that the original chip everyone was using was discontinued and replaced, and maybe there is a third version, or multiple versions. Allegedly, GUP from Canada has their own chip, and their newer e designs are different, but I'm not entirely sure on the details, as I haven't kept up with gate manufacturer drama. 😂 All I can say is that the 2cm ZUUL changes my tone, but less if it is after distortion. In front, it does though, because the guitar signal hits the buffer and the chip, which alters the interaction between the guitar and the the pedal or amp that would normally be the first the thing in the chain. If it is 4cm, I think has at least one buffer in the pedal.. But more likely it has 2 or 3. Afaik, every 4cm gate out there uses buffered splitters, and the chip itself is probably a buffer, but I haven't studied this. In fact, the buffers nigh even all be in the chip. All I know is that they sound like there are buffers in there to me. Now, that's not to say it drastically alters the tone. If you already use actives, it's probably less of a change, because you're guitar is already buffered at the source. Alternately, even using passive pickups, the impedance might match what you were already using, such as an OD or something, so this could also lessen the Tone change. For example, precision drive has about a 1M impedance. The Maxon OD808 has about 500k. If the impedance in the buffers in the gate match the Precision drive, it might sound less tone changing with the Precision drive, but might make the OD808 sound brighter and more constricting in the low end feel. Whether that matters in practice is also up in the air. In my case, I use passive pickups and worked extremely hard to get the exact response and tone out of certain pedals, but adding a buffer or gate to the equation then changes the sound enough to make me mad. 😂 As another note, typically, when using passive pickups, the first pedal /buffer is the one that will determine the Tone the most, but others will as well. For the clearest tone, the final pedal's output impedance can have a big impact on tone as its usually driving a long cable. Usually the lower the output impedance, the better, unless you want the signal to degrade. The Mesa buffers are awesome for this... But I don't like them in the input. One o want to try on the output is the Suhr, because it has the same specs as the Mesa, but it's smaller, and I don't use all the other features on the Mesa buffer.. Just the output buffer.

That’s not how the pedal was designed to work. It was designed to be its own FX loop only for the boost and distortion pedals. Try running the send from the ns2 to your distortion and then back into the return on the ns2. It sounds crazy but it works really well and is how Boss made it stand out from all the other noise gates.

Wonderful video! If i want to run a Walrus Audio Ages overdrive as a gain stage because i have a clean tube amp, where would i put that in my signal chain and would the noise suppressor be enough to still the hum, or should i just run the hm2 and ns2 on my clean amp with no overdrive?

The threshold on the NS-2 is set too high. It’s not gonna work like it should w the HM-2 like that. The noisier the pedal, the lower the threshold should be in the NS-2 otherwise you let too much noise go through

Doesn’t work well. You need the HM2 in the NS2 send and return. The output of the pedal is too much for the NS2 to work properly.

Can you use the 4 cable method if the only pedal you need to use is the NS-2? I don't use a pedal board or pedals just a Fender Super Champ 2 amp and it's noisy as sh1t.

I used a NS2 a long time ago incorporating the loop on the pedal. It certainly worked nicely but all the cable management made me hate using it. It's the same reason I ditched my Boss LS2. Though, maybe I will get another NS2 some day.... even though I still stand by "fuck the audience."

I want to use the X pattern with MT-2 but I have a question in this video you put the HM-2 infront of the amp right? I want my MT-2 in FX loop for that I should put the MT-2 between output and return of the amp right?

It really is just this simple If you want your shit well produced like later Mayhem, and especially if you want a more accessible type black metal sound that you can make money with (It's 2022, the cat is out of the bag, stfu,) get an NS2 and use it proper. If you don't know how to use it proper, learn *NOW.* If you have a bedroom project and don't give a damn about all that and just want to make lofi shit or more deeply "religious" or "suicidal" black metal or grind fusions or whatever, find other more creative ways to noise cancel. It really is just that fucking simple. *cue the yelling at me for being right.*
