Does chlorine in tap water harm beneficial microbes and bacteria in my garden soil?
Will the bacteria recover quickly?
How much chlorine is in tap or city water?
Should I remove chlorine from my tap, drinking or city water?

City Water Chlorine Lab Report:

Bacteria Found in Tap Water:
www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/...
I have noticed over the years that people recommend watering the garden with water that does not have chlorine in it such as Tap water. The premise of this statement is the bacteria I your soil are a key player in the nutrient cycle and chlorine kills bacteria.
So today I thought today I would test this garden assumption.
The water treatment plant that provides my drinking water has been recognized as using the gold standard for water treatment. After getting the water from the North Saskatchewan River it is initially shocked with Sodium hypochlorite or bleach. This does a great job at killing bacteria and other pathogens that may be in the water. The downside to using bleach is the chlorine decays rather fast once in contact with the water and air.
In order to keep the water safe while shipping ammonia is added to the water creating chloramine. This essentially stabilizes the clean water until it gets to you to make sure it is safe for you to drink.
It is really important to note that even at the highest levels the chemicals used to sterilize and stabilize the drinking water here in Alberta are several orders of magnitude below what is considered to be mildly irritating to humans.

On the impact on beneficial microorganisms yes. About the assumption that a minimum level of these chemicals in potable water does not harm human; this is an opinion based on old science knowledge paradigm although many studies start to show that repetitive adsorption of negligeable harmful chemical add up and cause structural diseases.

Again, thanks for the work. I know how long videos can take to plan, shoot, edit and present. This video was clear, to the point, and really presented great info on how tap water really doesn't cause a problem. Thanks. I might attach this to my compost tea video I will be making. I believe that collecting rainwater for the garden from your home or other buildings would remedy any chance of chlorine, heavy metal or ammonia contamination and microzoa harm. Was your chlorine sampling in the tap water free or total chlorine? the difference between 2.0 and 1.3 is significant in my eyes as 2.0 is over 50% higher than 1.3. The proof though, is in the bacteria and other microzoa counts in the samples. On the flip side, I have seen some hydroponic gardeners use a bit of chlorine bleach (household 5.25 - 6%) to "clean up" dark roots on, say strawberry plants. To me, if the dark roots deliver plenty of berries, turning them white with bleach is purely aesthetic. I think about some of this from an aquarium perspective. would I place anything as toxic as chlorine in any of my aquariums? NO. The same types of bacteria that feed the plants with the fish waste in the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate cycle also convert minerals to plant food in the soil. I place tap water in a 5 gallon bucket at least overnight before adding it to any aquarium or I use DI water. In the tropical fresh water systems that I use, the plants grow vigorously and have to be thinned on occasion. there are so many cycles of nutrients through the microzoa in the soil and water, that I think it is prudent to maintain non-toxic inputs to their environment. Great video and very descriptive! Thanks.
@AlbertaUrbanGarden

The analysis represented total Cl in the water. I have had a few comments about the impact of Cl on fungi and look forward to investigating. I do rely primarily on rain water in barrel and free falling. That said i am less worried when I have to use Tap water.
@rayr5950
@rayr5950 9 лет назад
1mtstewart Steve said his water is treated with Chloramine which is not the same a Chlorine. Chloramine is not as effective as Chlorine as a disinfectant. Chloramine also does not volatilize from the water like Chlorine does. Our local city water is treated with Chlorine, if I use it during dry periods because my rain water supply is depleted, I collect it buckets and let it sit in the sun at least overnight. It would be interesting to see the test done with straight chlorinated water out of the tap instead of Chloramined water out of the tap.

I have often pondered that theory of chlorinated water harming garden ecosystems, but considering that we drink the water, that in itself should say that it is not harmful at the point where it is dispensed from our homes. At the treatment plants as you stated they are hit with a high dose, and that kills them, but it doesn't linger and there is no need for it to linger in huge quantifies. Case and point, swimming pools have to be constantly and heavily chlorinated because its potency and effectiveness wears off over the course of a few days. If one application is missed, then the algae will immediately start growing. Great scientific research and rock solid data.
@AlbertaUrbanGarden
@AlbertaUrbanGarden 9 лет назад
ayatti26 I had thought the same. The levels in pools are so much higher than these results its would seem rather straight forward. That said there are products out there that perpetuate the myth in order to sell products. That said more research is required as always in science ;)

I'm trying to learn about Chloramine and the effect it has on the fish in my aquaponic system, which is a slightly different issue but it was good to know how chlorine changes as it's distributed. Have you done a study like this on soil fungus as well? One of the other things you may want to test is the presence of heavy metals in the town water, as the chemicals added in treatment make the water slightly acidic and this leaches off metals from the piping as it travels to your residence. I'm currently trialling the use of caravan water filters to see is this improves the health of my garden plants.

Love this video. Some of the filters are so expensive. I don't have that much money so I didn't buy any. My garden seems to be doing just fine without any. Thanks for the info :)

+OmgKittys78 Further to this video I am going to be releasing a follow up on the topic. It seems I was a few months ahead of some peer reviewed research that supports the findings here. no need for expensive filters on most tap water! Thank you for the kind words my friend!

Well bless your heart man for doing such a great service to us all. It's so confusing with all the unsupported information on RU-vid. But, your's is scientific. I've been filling out 5 gallon buckets and leaving them t air for 12-24 hours and filling my 2 gallon watering can to water my vegetables garden. So, no more. I'll go back to using my safe for drinking water garden hose. Thanks for a great presentation.

I am so glad I could help my friend. I too find it frustrating when I can’t find information that has some research to it.

Great info, Stephen! I've always wondered if chlorine really does harm beneficial bacteria like everyone says! Thanks for sharing your research! Love your new branding, BTW!
