I’m pretty sure that when you lifted the record up after using the Milty, that caused a new static charge, hence the high numbers. We’ll never know since you didn’t ever do the test without lifting up the record again. I’d like to see a test where: 1. Put the record on the turntable then take a reading. 2. Use the Milty then take a reading. 3. Then, play the entire side then take a reading. I’ll probably buy the meter and try this myself. Thanks for making the video.

Thank you for putting this experiment together and sharing it with us. You need to try the 4 pulls at 8 inches above the center of the spindle while the record is on the turntable and measure it while still on the platter. Every time you place a record flat on a surface and decouple it by removing it you will generate a potential change in charge. This will also vary depending on what type of platter and mat material you are using. I think the important thing here is to see the before and after while the record is placed on the platter because the balance of static charge is only important while you are playing the record and not handling it. You want it to be charge neutral while on the platter before you drop the stylus into the grove. Try this method during your next experiment and see how it goes.
@thevinylattack
@thevinylattack 3 года назад
The four pull method was a popular method I found and I followed it as written. You're probably right that it'll work better on the table and I'll look in to that for the follow up, but I didn't want to deviate from the method as written. Of course I didn't wear a damn grounding strap so what do I know? lol

Perhaps we all need to have audiophile wrist worn earthing straps like people use when working on circuit boards. Personally I can't see how the electrostatic charge varies across the surface of a record. I thought charge distributes itself equally over a surface, otherwise there is a potential difference.

responding to your request .I am a cmos electronics engineer , scientist and hi-fi addict- we used the original zerostat back in the early 1970's , you are doing the tests all wrong !!! take the record out of its sleeve, put it on the platter ( record turntable) take a meter reading. it will be low because some of the staric will be discharged to the platter. then use the zerostat at approx 6 inches from the record while it is spinning. give it one or two slow squeezes of the trigger. then take the meter readings. do not pick the record up as all you are only adding more static from surrounding air and yourself . the readings should now be 0.8 or lower.

One observation, you don’t seem to have accounted for your body picking up static through your shoes and chair. I wonder if you can reliably check if this is a problem by measuring yourself between tests to see if your static charge varies during testing. If a problem then you could place a rubber mat under your chair and shoes and then you touch a ground to Earth eg by touching a computer with metal chassis, then you should be static free. Touching to ground before each test will avoid any static contamination from the records being tested.

I bought my Zerostat in the mid seventies and have been using it ever since. I thought I'd relate to you my experience since I've found it works exceptionally well for me. After removing a record from its sleeve, I hold it near my face to determine how 'staticy' it is. I've found my cheek to be more sensitive to static than the back of my hand. If there is any static at all, I place the record on the turntable while in motion. I hold the Zerostat about 12" above the record and squeeze it slowly taking about 5 seconds, then releasing it over another 5 seconds. That's it, one slow squeeze in and a slow release. I've found it to remove 90 to 100% of the static every time. Great device! My 45 year old Zerostat looks the same as the new one other than mine is white in color.

I have been waiting for this to come back in stock from my favorite retailer. I'm about to pull the trigger so to say. It sounds like one of the options is the spray the record while it is spinning on the turntable. I have a belt drive table and almost every listening session I get a static zap at some point when I touch the tone arm to move it to or from the record. Thus my desire to get the antistat. I'm thinking of hitting the spinning record as well as the tonearm. $100 seems expensive, but I can't imagine that static sound running through my preamp is good for it either.

Your body is a capacitor, every time you pic up the Record you recharge it, also its not real world, no one picks up a record to use the Zerostat. Do real world. # 1 put record on turntable, #2 Take a reading #3 use Zerostat as prescribed (buy doing it on the Turntable you remove static from the record and also the turntable and cartridge. #4 take another reading. That's it done. Just buy touching and pulling away the record off of the turntable mat you generate static, the same thing happens when you separate two peaces of Styrofoam, or lift socks off of carpet you will see a sock stick to itself from static, when a woman puts on nylons she will generate static and when she pulls them off they will statically stick to her dress. As clothes in the dryer come together and then separate they will generate tons of static over. The half hour of coming together and separating. And When you have shocks on when walking on carpet if you drag your feet you will static charge your body.....after that (even if you no longer move your body will say charged for long periods of time and then if someone walks buy and you touch them and their body is not as statically charged as yours, the static electricity will jump from your body to theirs untill both body's have an equal charge then the static electricity will stop. The charge comes from braking contact from the carpet fibers as you dag your feet across all of the carpet fibers. Also when you comb dry hair, as the brush rubs and then brakes contact with the hair at the end of a comb stroke it will generate static to the point that a girls long hair will stand up. You are doing the same thing buy lifting up the Record off of the rubber mat and turntable.

The only reason to remove static electricity is to avoid clicks and ticks, right? So the only valid measurement can be taken with the record on the turntable right before starting playback and add a listening session right after. Since record vinyl might differ, always take the same record and do before/after readings. I even think it would be beneficial to introduce each test with your Standard „Play the record“ ceremony - I.e. get the record off the sleeve,put it onto the turntable, wipe/blow dust etc. this will charge your record and you can attack the static electricity with the ion blaster. BTW. After tearing all your sleeves apart - how do you store your records 🤓

I have some new additions for the follow up video, but using the same record probably won't work. I'd need to find a way to re-introduce static consistently. @claudec2588
@claudec2588 3 года назад
I think tearing the paper sleeve is counter productive. The act of tearing the paper creates millions of micro paper fragments that then have to be cleaned off the record before playing it. The presence of these small paper fibers increases the possibility that you create micro scratches when cleaning the record. My opinion., just remove the record from the paper sleeve in the normal manner and throw it away. If it has printing on it that you want to save put the paper sleeve by itself back in the record cover and put the record in a plastic sleeve.

For an even more scientific approach, I'd suggest: • Test each method at least 3 times, to ensure accuracy of measurements and application • Once consistent results are proven, conduct another test of each method where you interrupt the process halfway through and take a measurement, to gauge strength/effectiveness as well as potential improvements for each method. • Ground yourself with an anti-static strap (sometimes used in electronics repairs) to mitigate/eliminate potential static generated by yourself. Since the whole purpose of the Zero Stat is to remove static from records to be played (as opposed to held), there’s no point in testing them while being held. It strikes me that there are THREE questions that aren’t being differentiated by your method. Firstly there’s the question (A) of ‘can the gun remove static from a record?’, which is different from (B) ‘can the gun remove static from a record when it’s on the platter?’, and (C) ‘Is there a further problem of static generation after the record has been played?’. For (A), you need only hold the record using rubber gloves (that metering confirms are not affecting the test) and zap the record with the gun. If the product works, then we should see the static in the disc decrease. For (B), you need to meter when the disc is on the platter, before and after zapping with the gun, For (C) you need to meter a third time after the record has been played but when it is still on the platter. If this shows build up of static, then the type of mat may be the problem and a topic for another video.

Great concept for testing bur I feel you negated every test by lifting the record to measure ...we (humans) are like big batteries , always carrying a charge - just think how we ZAP others or grounds when humidity is low. So every time you touch that album, you are re-introducing a charge to what you just deionized. Okay so redo the tests. Everyone with the record on the table (spinning or not) and measure. So example - Test 1 - Record out of sleeve, on the table. Measure. Do the one squeeze 12" as per instructions. Measure - There is your baseline. Now do all the other tests the same way but the only alteration is # or position of squeeze, duration, spin no spin. THat I would love to see. Great video and tests... just a couple of steps missing to be more acurate though; unless you have a wire connecting your big toe to an outdoor copper grounding pipe or to the ground prong of your wall power socket, you're not going to get a favorable outcome. By touching your record to meter your results, you are sharing positivity and re-charging your vinyl by pretty much creating a "closed loop". By not discharging or "earthing" your body before handling, numbers will be all over the place. Your rubber turntable mat is an excellent insulator! Try placing your record on the platter, take your measurements, then use the Zerostat and re-measure without physically touching the record throughout the entire process. I get near 100% results every time! Just friendly advice 🙂 wow lol, just realized that you guys pretty much went through all this a year ago... ha! sorry to have wasted your time 🤪🤢🤮💩

Just now, I think I came up with an easy and inexpensive vinyl anti-static idea. Where I live, during winter, the air is so dry and my warm weather clothes are mostly nylon. The dry air combined with nylon clothes generates very strong static electricity and the shock always stings me. So I started grounding my hand to the kitchen sink while I remove my nylon clothes and the static gets discharged on the metal sink. So I think this might work on vinyl as well, just ground a metal oven tray to the sink with a copper wire and place the record on tray to discharge the static. There's even Conductive Fabric for Grounding/Earthing that you can order online. I'm a DJ so I will buy it and cut into DJ slipmats because back-cueing records is how I generate static electricity on my records, but it will still need to get grounded with copper wire before and after playing. I would love to see you try my idea and measure the static charge with your little device.
