The issue is not whether it fits the overhead bin. The issue is whether it fits the square measuring box they have at the gate. If the gate agent so much as suspects that you're an inch too large they will make you test it. U.S. carriers are a lot more lenient than European carriers. I wouldn't push it with an European carrier, especially one of the LCC's like Ryanair or Easy.

I am not sure that the 40L version fits if it is fully loaded, so it is useless to try with the 55L unless it is only half loaded, and in this case, the bag itself will takes place that is very limited (and it shrinks quite regurlarly). Most of the so called cabin bags are now not allowed for lots of companies, specially LCC.

So does the 40L fit into the gate square measuring cage?

The trapezoidal shape of these duffels accounts for why they pack way above their stated capacity and conform so easily to the inside shape of the overhead. You can EASILY take the 55L onboard.

did you occasionally have to really shove it in there? i wanna get the 55 but we usually fly alaska and i think their dimensions are 14x9x22 and i know you can squish a duffel pretty well. just a bit nervous

I have the older 60L and bought the 55L for my wife recently. The 55L is oddly enough significantly larger.

I can confirm this. I had the older 60L for years but it was wearing out and looking bag (though functional) and Patagonia replaced it for me. They let me have the option of going up or down in size and I went down to the 55L to keep using it as a carry on and it's at least the same size or larger.

Recently traveled on Norse Air. They have B787 for their international flights. I had a roller carry-on that most definitely would not have fit in their cage sizer because of the wheels but they did not make me test it. When i got onto the plane, it fit perfectly in the overhead bin. Their sizer cages are a scam to just charge you more money. I know why they let me go ahead (while others were getting shafted and upcharged). I had an upgraded fare which allowed personal item, carry-on and checked bag, and since i didn't check a bag, they already made the money off me, so they let the oversized carry-on through. If your carry-on is just tiny bit larger than their cages (because of the wheels), it will fit.

Thanks for testing this! Since you seem to be based in Germany, have you ever tried to carry-on the 55l on a german national or EU flight? The bag's size definitely exceeds the smaller/cheaper airlines' restrictions (e.g. 55 x 40 x 20 cm for carry-on with Ryanair)

I've flown in Canada and US with the 55 and no issues ever, but I'm always a bit anxious lol. I do bring a compression strap and sometimes will cinch the bag with it a bit if it just "looks" too big. Staying under the radar of the gate team and in flight crew is key. If they see you bopping other passengers on the head as you walk the plane to your seat...you may get a tap on the shoulder.

I have the 55L and I often fly Ryanair, I will book it as a priority two cabin bags and always wear the 55L as a backpack style and thankfully I have had no issues so far, normally when I'm depositing it into the overhead bin I get a look from the flight attendants but It fits in fine from back to front of the bin and actually takes up little room. Fingers crossed for more travelling with no issues!

Still working well for you @anglebars6084? The actual measurements for the checkbox are, according to a post I read online 212mm x 412mm x 580mm. The length of the Patagonia is off by a good bit but I find mine is very squishy so once you don't overpack it it's easy to manipulate to the size required.
