Although also to be fair about the case decomposing - just burying it isn't the same as putting the case in a compost pile. Love your comments about being eco-friendly with phones. Use it until it dies!
I’d highlight, that that was pretty decent decomposition considering burying it versus composting (which heats up to ~180 F) are very different processes. An actual compost pile would probably break it down much faster.
Well the difference isn't that it breaks down, it's that it doesn't break down into microplastics. Any phone case will break down eventually, but what they break down into is the big part.
Bury the case again and wait 1 year .. I’d be interested in seeing what happens to it. While at it bury a none decomposing case next to it as a control.. some silicon case.. maybe it will look more or less the same ? 🤷♂️
I was going through the comments on the other video and though to myself "this comment is very specific to my location". Looked him up and had to include it in the video.
Appreciate the idea of not buying new phones/products as a great way to help the environment. However if someone wants a case to protect their phone (new or used), then it might as well be compostable rather than plastic, right? And using a case can help make your phone last longer, while will also help. I think baby steps are better than no steps. That said, you put a lot of effort in these videos so well done for that!
I would guess that if the compostable case is less protective and you need to go through several phones because they break with that case, it might not be the best way.
@@valeriestanson9907 I've had my light colored pela case for 4 months and so far it looks brand new. I try to keep my cases the entire lifespan of a the phone. My phone has fallen, on hard floors and in water -- it's perfectly fine. So, for me, the case has been protective and I will compost it if my phone dies.
Great video! It's amazing the way the case started flaking like that after being buried. I'm surprised your case slips off the corners that easily though. I have an iPhone 6s and the case wraps it pretty tightly. It actually takes me a bit of force to slip it out of the corner. The way the Pela case fits must depend on the phone model...
I’m kinda surprised that it degraded that much especially in the winter. As for the used phone stuff, I’m too cheap to buy a new phone every year, I bought the iPhone X used after my iPhone SE had a wire connected to the display that looked like it melted (a weird smell came from the phone when it got hot) and the lcd looked like it was spectating from the glass, and it had a weird negative effect going on as well, I managed to bring it back to life for like a week until the screen just wouldn’t light up, the phone itself still seems to work though
Cool experiment! I didn’t see your original video but I think it is neat that it started breaking down in Canadian winter. Monty sounded really upset about the case about halfway through the video.
My sister had an old iPhone 6 pela case in a cupboard that had a leak we didn’t know about... When we found it after a few weeks, it was half broken down in the water.
The Fair Phone is a really cool one that tries to be environmentally friendly. It's only available in Europe for now, but if you live there, there you go.
Sooo I checked the profile of the RU-vid user who called you dumb...he posted a video of himself and has the same face as the Pela employee! What a coincidence!!! 🤪
Quick qu, if you are not a fan of the pela cases (damaged screen, poor fit, lack of protection etc) why is your current phone in another Pela case? Is it a new design / an updated version?
Good thoughts on bigger issues surrounding consumerism, Aaron. Environmental issues aren’t black and white, nuanced solutions are certainly warranted. Cool to see it actually start to breakdown though.
Go 50 videos! So it is compostable. Aaron Ho you are a man of your of word. So funny that you found out that it was a guy who worked for Pela! That is good researching! You are right, that if we keep buying new phones it is more wasteful. Wouldn't that put you out of business? Thank you for your videos, that was great!
I don't think it would put me out of business, people would still buy phones, just not as often but would still need accessories for them. And if that wasn't the case, I'd just pivot and do something else.
Still rocking my HTC One M9! My dad replaced the battery (pain in the ass by the way). Other than that, it still works. I do plan on getting an iPhone soon. For me, Android Auto sucks! Too buggy. I do agree that people don't need a new phone every year. I swear, people obsess over camera features like it's nothing. My advice to people is just to keep your phone for at least 5 years or until it craps out.
Ok, so much to break down but I’m just gonna say this. Yes I agree with the notion that if you care about the earth than maybe try not to buy a new phone every year, HOWEVER, caring about the earth also means that maybe you shouldn’t buy that 50th PLASTIC phone case for your phone that you definitely don’t need. So, that opinion goes both ways man. At least these companies are offering a small way to REDUCE plastic consumption. AND ON TOP OF THAT companies like pela donate the money they make from these phones cases to help clean the earth. I get what you are saying but I feel like there is more to this conversation.
My whole life, we've only gotten second hand phones. They only last a few years (2-3) before they begin to slow down, or stop updating. For the first time we're getting BRAND NEW phones, which is very exciting
That's pretty cool and atleast they are trying. You would think with all Apples hype about the world and recycling the phones that they would have invested in a degradable case
Im only here scrolling through your uploads to see if you have a video of monty being outside running around and having a good time since he’s been working so hard inside
CALLED IT! If everybody says its a stupid idea to put something in the frozen ground and think its going to turn into compost then perhaps listen. Truely a dog idea dig a hole and put things there for later.
i'm still on my iphone 6 64gb i bought okt 2014.. have to admit it's starting to protest sum times with podcast app sum time crashing on me yep that's right Apple's native app crashes when your phone gets old hahaha.. i'm considering upgrading to the SE because i can buy more storage and get a phone with more mem to that will help with the apps crashing.. btw the best move i did to reduce my pollution is stop consuming animal products i did that +3yrs ago after watching "CowSpiracy" and "What The Health".. also reduced buying plastic bottles i bought 3 7yr ago and still use them after cleaning even make my own carbonated drinks.. ;-) not a hassle saves me time not having to go to the store ;-)
Thanks for the video man! I would have bought pela case if not because of your video. Your video was savage but it saved people like me to reconsider buying such cases because then it's all about consumption so you are damn right about that. Thanks again dude!
For PLA; Other than the time it takes to break down, adding to Landfill volume even the Methane, Potentially taking the form of harmful traps and shapes to hurt Sea life, along with the Inefficiencies and complications behind Waste management. PLA is derived 100% from Organisms, so doesn't that make it 100% okay to go back into the Environment? This is something Ive never had a clear answer on, Is there still harmful chemicals that are released in the break down process? The Scientific Definition of Plastics: Are a group of materials, either synthetic or naturally occurring, that may be shaped when soft and then hardened to retain the given shape. Most Plastics are 100% not okay for the environment, generally being derived from Petroleum oil. This is pretty much the new definition of what Plastic is and what we all think of, when we think of Plastic
I also thought that a lot of people like getting new phones also get new cases. So I could always just go on an online thrift shop to find a phone case someone doesn’t like anymore. Thanks for the video because I almost bought a thrifted pela case but since i drop my phone a lot I didn’t think it was the best.
Commercial composting is completely different from just burying it in the ground lol. In order to be advertised as compostable a product has to be able to break down within 90 days in a commercial composter.
Just tripped upon your video while searching for reviews of Pela products. Really appreciate your message about consumption being the culprit. Your even-handedness and intelligent humor made watching your video a joy. Also appreciate the suspense in terms of waiting for the live outcome of your experiment! Thank you.
I use my phone weekly to make video content for work. I'm so glad I paid for the most RAM because after 3 years. I still haven't run out of space for apps or videos. Thanks for reminding me that I can keep my phone until it doesn't work and even THEN I can find a 3rd party repair to keep it going. We need more voices like yours to balance out the push to consume we are surrounded by. I keep thinking in my head "Aren't I supposed to have a new phone now? Don't people replace their phone each year? Am I missing out on some important technology updates?" But it's working. It's fine. I just need a new eco friendly case. Hence finding this video.
This ASTM biodegradation test method is an aerobic biodegradation test that introduces material to a mixed bacterial and fungal environmental inoculum and uses respirometry to measure biodegradation. Standard testing for ASTM D5338 is a minimum of 90 days in an aerobic and controlled composting environment. Most all of the polymers claiming biodegradability is BS GreenWASH. It degrades but into what? Soil enrichment or poison?
Eww...that case needs to stay buried 🤣 but I’m surprised it actually did start to break down somewhat after 7 months. Put that thing underground here on Guam, and maybe it would vanish after a month 🌴. At 3:48 - what was Monty growling at?
Can you review the otterbox commuter for the SE it’s crazy what they did there selling the old iPhone 8 cases and just change the label but remember Apple lowered the Apple logo so the logo cut out completely misses the logo
You mean bioplastics? If so, that doesn’t degrade in a landfill, we’re most bioplastics end up. Look this up blogs.ei.columbia.edu/2017/12/13/the-truth-about-bioplastics/
@@karinamatos4253 That's why Pela says not to throw their products in a landfill. They recommend composting it at home, in an industrial composting program, or you can send their products back to them and they will recycle them into new products.
I still have freakin iPhone 📱 7 so I’m definitely not buying a new phone every year or falling into the hype. In fact I’m doing the opposite. #greenenvironmentnow
Omg!! I love this guy! So true! Reuse, and recycle is also not getting the news tech. I carried the Nokia snake game phone when everyone was getting phones with cameras on them.🤣
Agreed! Proud to be a part of the "old phone club". I use my devices until they no longer work. Wish more people would heed this message and realize what these companies are doing. Truly the most important message in this video.
@@laurena3947 so true! This Generation are so worried about keeping up with the Jones. My kids are shocked when they realize their Grandparents are Multimillionaire’s. Because they save, and invest. They live with only Necessities. I was always told if you Make 100.00, you put 75.00 in savings and the rest you buy what you need. The phone companies I believe do something to our cell phones every time there is an update. When the phone is brand new it takes amazing photos etc. then after about five updates the pictures you take get blurry, and look bad, phone doesn’t download correctly even if you pay for iCloud, call start dropping, your cell phone signal gets worse. I personally think the companies are doing stuff through updates, that way you’ll purchased the newer phone. It’s ridiculous.
I forgot about when you buried the case. It’s kind of funny the day after that video, I went and got an android and than the day before you posted this video I switched back to iPhone
I’m surprised that they encourage consumerism. I just had a peek at their site and the first thing I saw was: Buy 2 get 2 free PRIME TIME SALE Buy 1 get 1 50% off And then they show me this bar of how much more the average customer spends They do offer some type of insurance if the screen breaks now in 2023 so that’s good, but I would like to see them cutting out that consumerism behaviour because it’s the opposite of what you would think they and their customers stand for. If you buy two 50% plastic cases then why not buy 1 of 100% plastic. Also, yes I learnt that there was plastic in it here, as it was wrapped in too nicely for me to find that fact on their site at first glance. I want them to be upfront about the plastic because what else do they need to sugarcoat one might start to think. If it really is compostable with the plastic like they claim, (and it sure looks like it does) I would suggest to combat any questions raised by popping a video of the process on the site instead of avoiding the topic altogether by making it seem like it’s zero plastic to the average consumer that just don’t have the time or energy to check what it is actually made of I appreciate their efforts and All of that being said I believe I will make a purchase because I’m purely buying it for aesthetics because i have this secret magical power of never breaking my phone ever. My naked phone feels it’s time to get dressed
@@MobileReviewsEh The rare elements are all that really matter. Plus, we are comparing what could be, and we could recycle the whole thing if need be. Personally, I say harvest the rare metals, and run the rest through plasma gasification.
You telling people to keep old phone is stupid. You go through phone and cases and screen protectors. Kind of you should practice what you preach. Hypocrite comes to mind. Sorry but truth will set you free. Love Monty.
You must be new to the channel. I'm a product reviewer. That’s my job. I didn’t break a few things during the review process so that nobody else has to. BUT If you want reviews based on non-usage, iMore is that way ->
MobileReviewsEh I have watch your channel for years Great job you do but it is hypocritical to tell someone not to do what you do. If it’s ok for you it’s ok for them. I always try stuff myself. I don’t go by other people. That being said love your dog and your videos.
Both my samsung cases were loose, one came warped! Do not buy unless you have an iphone, they do not have their samsung sizes figured out and will not refund the return shipping! Also very overpriced
The Pela case isn't biodegradable, nor was it ever. It's 100% home compostable. If you don't have a home composter, send the case in to Pela. They will grind it up and turn it into the blush colored case. The Pela Case isn't 50% petroleum based plastic. It is made of bio-plastics that are compostable. Using flax, a renewable crop, is less wasteful then using limited oil supplies to produce plastic.
The factor that you’re missing in this experiment is heat! You can put the case in a personal compost bin too, you don’t have to send it to industrial. They’re advertised as compostable and not simply biodegradable. I get why people get confused though... but it says directly on their website how to properly expose of the cases, The point is that heat is the factor that increases speed of decomposition. Backyard compost bins are made with metal to churn and increase the heat of the environment rather than burying it in cold, hard soil. Add heat and you can achieve that 90 day decomp. Without heat it could probably take years??? A decade?
