The United States announced to the world that Puerto Rico was no longer a colonial possession. But almost 70 years later, the island is at the mercy of Congress. How did we get here? And how do we solve it?

When you fear to say the word "sovereignty" out loud you have accepted your fate as a slave and aren't even a free speaking human person with inherent rights. So that's what the ELAs are, slaves: to Wall Street, the Junta, Pfizer, Walmart etc. And like good little slaves they will only praise the "generosity" of their master and wish only to live in his house and eat the scraps that fall from his table. They own nothing and have no ambition to achieve anything greater than whatever the master deems fit to give them. Their spirit is broken and they're just things to be used, unworthy of respect in any way.

I ve enjoyed a full understanding of our socio/economic/political scenarios since the completion of my undergrad studies. (1970s). I actully lived in Santurce until my health problems required me to move back to NYC. It's a shame that so many of our fellow countrymen don't understand the colonialized mentality and its inherent pitfalls. THEY NEED A SERIOUS STUDY OF ALBIZU CAMPOS AND HIS ANTICOLONIAL DOCRTINES. I'm tired of dealing with colonized fools who pretend to be political experts. Some of these poverty pimp politicians are on this video begging Washington DC for economic help. That's partially correct. There was colonial repression indeed. But there was also violence from the other side. Albizu Campo and his pro-independence Nationalist Party decided to carry out " armed struggle" against US colonialism and rejected electoral methods to achieve independence only after his party got less than 6,000 votes in the 1932 elections in Puerto Rico. At the time most Puertorricans preferred US colonialism to Albizu's model of independence based on a nostalgic view of the exploitative late 19 century Puerto Rico where the word of the Hacendado or " landlord " was law. Then came the Cold War and the pro-independence puertorrican far left promoted communist Cuba as a potential model of a future Puertorrican republic, and supported armed groups like the FALN and the "Macheteros". During such period popular support for independence rarely went over 5%. In fairness during such period the socialdemocratic Puertorrican Independence Party ( PIP) was sympathetic but not very close to the Cuban government, But recently when Fidel Castro died the PIP president since 1970 Ruben Berrios ( who has expelled from his party any member that has questioned him) eulogized Fidel as a great believer in freedom and party member and senator Maria Lourdes Santiago praised Maduro's Venezuela publicly and even signed a letter supporting the recent incarceration by the Cuban government of thousands of peaceful protesters. With such preferences by pro-independence advocates it should not boggle one's mind that most Puertorricans view as a more rational option to be a US state than an independent republic.

The U.S. can control their econmy, products, ports and domestic routes. If you want their credits and products and economy you play by their rules. The U.S. like any country wants to control their domestic economy by keeping it within so the money moves around their economy. This is economics 101. You are not using American credit, American products, American ports and use their credit on foreign economies. You can do it but not with American credit.

Great video. There’s some funny things that happen when demographics diverge so greatly like they do in PR. Cities scale- and so do their infrastructure problems, supported by a dense tax base. As areas lose population, they still have many of the drawbacks of the legacy system, large utility grid problems and a shrinking tax base.

Puerto Rico is a nation, a country invaded by another country (USA) that, as USA usually does, STAYS . American laws have made us very poor, since we can't have trade with other nations, nor our own economy. Our patriots have all been killed, or incarcerated in oder to scare away any dissidence. Then, they say that "Puerto Ricans don't want independence" That's not true. The two main parties backed by USA "confuse" people by telling them that Statehood is the real sovereingty, which for us... it's not, and that ELA is not a colony, that it's the best of both worlds. After more than 120 years we are still very much Puerto Rican,and proud of it!! We have not been assimilated,and we don't want to be!! Make sure you put that in your videos

My main concern is what will keep PR from falling into poverty and crime like the Philippines once the US leaves it or falling into a 3rd world status or become Venezuela(Extreme). Some of the current issues with the financial status is to be blamed on the corruption on the island. Not being able to pay back debt borrowed on municipal bonds is what got PR where it stands today with the Obama's PROMESA over seeing the island and it's current financial status. This is what happens when you leave the children at home do what they want with no supervision. In 1996 President Clinton signed legislation that phased out section 936 this busted the financial bubble that PR found itself in. 936 was completely phased out by 2006 and by 2016 PR finds itself in bankruptcy status.

When we limit ourselves to specific definitions, like clinging to the idea of "colonization", we limit the opportunity to understand what is really occurring and what our viable options actually are. For example my own country, The Hawaiian Kingdom, underwent a coup d'etat fomented by a small group of 13 pro-American, white supremacist Sugar plantation owners. This group, euphemistically named the Committee of Safety, conspired with the US government to provide it with military support in exchange for the promise that the Republic of Hawai'i government that the US supported coup d'etat would create would annex The Hawaiian Kingdom to the US. When the US backed the coup d'etat of 1893 that seized control of the popular, democratically elected, constitutional monarchy government of The Hawaiian Kingdom and replaced it with a self declared, unelected government put into power by an illegal coup d'etat backed by US military intervention which constituted an international war crime due to the fact that The Hawaiian Kingdom had been a declared neutral nation since 1854, it did not seize control of the country itself, it only seized control of the government and effectively, illegally occupied The Hawaiian Kingdom. So now my colleagues and me are reorganizing The Royal Hawaiian Monarchy government in preparation for its imminent reconvening as the rightful, lawful government of The Hawaiian Kingdom (Hawai'i). We have a very strong legal and diplomatic case in our favor because the US is obsessed with maintaining an accurate historical record by documenting and archiving official records of everything it has ever done including classified and top secret documentary evidence of even it's mist egregiously illegal, unlawful, unethical and immoral activities. This wealth of documented and verified evidence will form the basis of our legal cases against the US. So we have every reason to believe that we will prevail in the courts in every instance. My hope is that Puerto Rico chooses the path of sovereign independence that is it's inherent right rather than tying itself to the fast-sinking ship of state of the American Empire. Your statement is so interesting. It also feels like Hawaii was a strategic place for the U.S. gobernment.
@ponokealii
@ponokealii 2 года назад
@@melbuilt this is true. Hawai'i WAS strategic to the US Expansionist (a euphemism for "imperialist") foreign policy following the Spanish-American war. However, the current thinking of modern military strategists is that Hawai'i is no longer critical to US global military strategy. Today the use of rapid deployment forces can place special forces with air support at forward outposts in a matter of hours with a follow on forward placement of main infantry forces, with armor, artillery, supplies and field medical operations followed up by prepositioned naval fleet support makes rapid deployment strategy a wiser choice for US Pentagon military strategists and a much easier strategy to deploy and to defend than the archaic and obsolete legacy military strategy of concentrating military, personnel and material at foreign posts rather than within the better defensive and training position within the easier to defend borders of the homeland. Additionally the advent of hypersonic ICBM strategy means that an adversary with nuclear and hypersonic ICBM capability can make multiple laser accurate guided hypersonic ICBM strikes deep within the heartland literally at will. The best defense against hypersonic ICBM strike capability is a deep underground integrated and physically interconnected military base network - a strategy that cannot be deployed in the small island archipelago of The Hawaiian Kingdom - with mobile surface naval fleets including deep submarine tactics that enable submarine squadrons to operate in the deepest parts of the ocean without surfacing for indefinite periods. The legacy of large, fixed, above ground military hard target facilities is an archaic, antiquated and obsolete military tactic because these facilities could be easily and completely vaporized in a couple of hours by a single laser targeted hypersonic ICBM strike My government, The Royal Hawaiian Monarchy government of The Hawaiian Kingdom expects to easily convince the Americans to leave our kingdom because it is in their own best interests and would save the US government hundreds of billions of dollars in annual military spending. @ponokealii
@ponokealii 2 года назад
@@fdr8343 The foreign policy interests of the United States have nothing whatsoever to do with and do not in any way supercede the separate and arguably more important, inherent right of The Hawaiian Kingdom to it's sovereign independence. The US also has no right to subvert and subsume the interests of any other nation in order to promote what it imagines is it's right to it's self defense. We are a sovereign, independent and neutral nation-state. That means that The Hawaiian Kingdom, like every other sovereign and independent nation-state, has an inviolable, inherent right to maintain it's sovereignty - it's right to its self-governance and self-determination - and it's independence - it's right to be governed by it's own system of government and it's own body of laws. To demonstrate to you why it's so important that EVERY sovereign and independent nation-state, no matter it's geographical size, economic status or the power of it's military forces, be allowed to maintain it's sovereignty and independence let's use the example of the Russian threat to Ukraine. Here we have a situation where Russia claims to have annexed a part of Western Ukraine (the Crimea) based solely on the fact that ethnic Russians have established themselves as residents of Crimea at various points in history. The US is the leading proponent of the defense of Ukraine, of which Crimea is a part, in this matter based on a policy which former US President Obama proposed in his famous speech to the UN General Assembly, in regards to the Russian government's claim of it's right to annex Crimea, when he pointed out that the world no longer believes that big, powerful nations can simply take over smaller nations when it is in their own national or foreign policy interests. The obvious irony here is that Obama conveniently failed to note that this was exactly what the US did when it invaded and occupied The Hawaiian Kingdom to support a coup d'etat by a small group of 13 self-avowed white supremacist racist insurgents as part of a secret conspiratorial agreement with the white supremacist insurgents that they would annex The Hawaiian Kingdom to the US in exchange for it's role in support of the illegal coup d'etat. As history would have it, the attempted annexation of The Hawaiian Kingdom failed when the US Congress declined to ratify the Treaty for the Annexation of Hawai'i because the subjects of The Hawaiian Kingdom signed a series of petitions to the US Congress resoundingly objecting to the annexation of their Kingdom to the US - in effect asserting the sovereignty of The Hawaiian Kingdom since the sovereignty of every nation belongs solely and exclusively to the people who constitute the nation NOT to the government of the nation which is elected by the people to serve their interests. Even though the US later passed a domestic congressional resolution to unilaterally "proclaim" it's "legal" annexation of The Hawaiian Kingdom legal scholars conversant in the international laws of annexation agree that a unilateral domestic resolution does not possess the legal authority or jurisdiction to supplant the legal authority and jurisdiction of a mutual international treaty in a matter such as annexation which requires the level of mutual agreement between nations which only a mutually agreed upon international treaty can provide. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) would, years later, concur with the conclusion that the US never legally annexed The Hawaiian Kingdom after the US State Department (STATE) asked the DOJ, in an interagency memo in 1989 preliminary to a SCOTUS case in which the prosecution claimed that the US government had no legal authority or jurisdiction in the matter being adjudicated because it never legally annexed The Hawaiian Kingdom. STATE knowingly withheld the DOJ legal opinion as evidence from both the Supreme Court and the prosecution, because it was contained to within an interagency memo, even though it was legally obliged and compelled to share any and all evidence it's possession relevant to the case being adjudicated. My government, The Royal Hawaiian Monarchy government of The Hawaiian Kingdom, has obtained the interagency memo legal opinion of the DOJ - from the US National Archives through a FOIA request. In the interagency memo document the DOJ concluded that, after a thorough and rigorous examination of all historical, documented evidence pertinent to STATE's request for a legal opinion on the matter of the alleged legal US annexation of The Hawaiian Kingdom, DOJ concluded that the US NEVER legally annexed The Hawaiian Kingdom. This means that The Hawaiian Kingdom has NEVER legally been a part of the US - and so subsequently could not legally be made a US state since Congress does not have the constitutional authority to make a US state of a sovereign and independent nation-state - and that further, the US federal and military presence in The Hawaiian Kingdom constitutes an illegal, belligerent, foreign occupation of a sovereign and independent, neutral nation-state AND, further still, a serious international war crime since The Hawaiian Kingdom has been a declared neutral nation since 1854 and the invasion and occupation of a declared neutral nation constitutes a de facto international war crime. My government is preparing criminal charges in the International Criminal Court of the World Court in The Hague against the US government for the international war crime of violating the declared neutrality of The Hawaiian Kingdom and for genocide by denationalization for denying The Hawaiian Kingdom it's inherent sovereign independence after the US committed the unprovoked, undeclared act of war of invading and occupying the sovereign and independent nation-state of The Hawaiian Kingdom in support of an illegal coup d'etat by a group of self-avowed, white supremacist racist insurgents. This is only one of a litany of criminal charges against the US government that my government is preparing to submit to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) at the World Court in The Hague beginning in the Spring of 2022 for the many illegal, unlawful, unethical and immoral acts that the US government has committed against The Royal Hawaiian Monarchy government, The Hawaiian Kingdom and the people of Hawai'i over the past nearly 130 years. Good video! The comparison between a child or a spouce is striking but in my opinion somewhat limited. let me explain, so a bit long comment. IF i had the choice, as puerto Rico i would go for the being a child instead of a spouce. Simply to be seen as a spouce is asking to to US to evaluate the benefits to share the car, couch and creditcard. Since the relation is already not good the outcome is realistically not good. A sudden seperation is likely, but with no alemony. But as a child you can lay a wish on the table. And childeren grow up, and leave the house. One can enjoy the time to experiment, tryout economics, law etc and still have a backup. I am dutch, and the Dutch have hunderd of years experience with oversea colonies. Not in a good or right way i must add. In the west indies, Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, Saba, St Eustatius. and St Maarten. Some islands like Aruba already in 1947 have declared that. the wanted to be (more) independent. In the 70ties, the wish for independence and self-determination was agreed in a treaty. a date was picked ->1991. In 1986 Aruba was cut of and a fully seperate country with all own rights with it but still in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. in 1991 Aruba in the year of full independence they could, but choose not yet to be fully independent. Backwards seen good choice, seeing the economic and other crisis it had to face. So basically the islands choose regarding their ability to run a budget and survive, to be a part of the Netherlands, or to be the growing child to independence. And yes, islands fuck up. Ask for money to go to the doctor but spend it on bose and gadgets don't reply calls etc. And no wonder daddy wil imply some rules and governement it. See history Curacao. Simply said, as a child you have much more options than a spouce to grow to indepence. Don't get stuck in history and victimize yourself, just turn blame in a care for PR and time to grow up. Greetz and looking forward to your next video.

Very interesting. Most US citizens would grimace at the indignity of having to admit that it holds Puerto Rico as a colony. Thank you for pointing out all sides of this complex situation. I have always considered that Congress has held Puerto Rico hostage. With the stroke of a pen, any president could embolden the people of Puerto Rico. A future where the people can hold the reins of their own future while remaining a strong US ally. But that is not how colonists behave. I believe Puerto Rico is deserving of substantial reparations, investment in quality education and healthcare. The US owes the people of Puerto Rico a state granted, official apology. I’m finding it so difficult to be a a US citizen these days. Thank you for you fine journalism.

The fear of starving, and of not knowing what to do is what feels the colonialists (PPD, and PNP). I recognize that the ELA had a lot of success in transforming Puerto Rico and pulling it out of its abject poverty, but it should have been an interim step. Once we had a sustainable economy we should have worked to sustain it and to keep evolving and growing. However, the two parties in power turned the country into a Kleptocracy that's robbed us from our future. I agree with the colonialist lady in one thing though. Puerto Rico needs a coherent economic development plan. There is no way we can have a future until we are able to stand on our own as an economy. That will be the time where we will be able to make and enforce our will. We can't make decisions while being held hostage by the threat of starvation.

I came to Puerto Rico from NYC as a 10 years old for two weeks for the first time in 1968. I met family members who lived without a floor in their home and hammocks were their beds and tin roofs with holes adorned the dirt floor with beams of sun light. They ate their food out side of the home and bugs and flies would be flying all around them while they ate. I had cousins who weight 35 lbs at the age of 10, 11 and 12 who walked around with no shoes and had sores in all of their body. I came back as a 25 years old man in 1983 , gone were the old houses, everyone lived a better life , they had new cars and jobs and their health was much better. When I hear all the criticism about the US it is so hard to not look at it as disrespectful hypocritical and shameful. I saw and lived the difference the US help made in my family and I could only be grateful for that. It is easy for young people to be so ungrateful when the life they are living is so different and easy now and they didn't see the suffering, the hardship, the hunger. As an old man now I hope never to see what I did as a boy here in this beautiful Island of mine. You can open up your arms and try to grab all that you can but usually you can not have it all. I also want dignity, freedom and a country, but remember you won't have it all and hunger as I saw it will win every time.

What currency would an independent Puerto Rico use, little Bianca's Bitcoin, the same currency that disappeared into thin air in Venezuela, and was just banned in China? Who's going to sign up for a Puerto Rican military, are you?

ELA is obsolete. A new form of governance should take place. Either a US style restructuring like Hawaii for statehood or independence referendum followed by a complete nation restructure without US support

@@deadlywayzlodice8393 what PR needed, needs and will need is people who wake up early in the morning, work and pay taxes, and enjoy their life at the end of their business day plus weekends. People who seek education, people who raise their hands to point out what’s wrong, people who are willing to listen to their fellow countrymen/women even when they don’t agree with them, people who raise their children in the most responsible of ways. Running for office is a very small part of a better version of Puerto Rico.

@@richierich252 Nope. Such thing does not exist in PR. The labels are used for technicalities, but have zero say on what the Island does. PNP and PPD rule and equally corrupt. Both of these parties include members who identify with both US main parties. So PNP is not democrat or republican. PPD is not democrat or republican.

that’s what the clowns we have for politicians have tried to sell, but in reality we’ve been getting poverty as a possession of another country for decades.

The term commonwealth is a tricky one. It can be made to mean anything. Puerto Rico is a commonwealth in the United States but it does not have the privileges and responsibilities of the states of the US. Canada is a commonwealth of the United Kingdom and it has membership and a presence in the United Nations. Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Virginia are called commonwealths too but they don't have membership in the UN. Just wanted to point that out.

Sorry to nitpick, but "commonwealth" is not Puerto Rico's status. It's an overseas territory. Mass, Kentucky, Virginia, and Pennsylvania are all commonwealths...

@@flaykeydig7946 Mass, Penn, Virginia and Kentucky all have their official name as the Commonwealth of... This does not diminish their status any less as states. That's my point, like these states, the name "Commonwealth of Puerto Rico" isn't saying that is their status, it is just a name for the islands. Their status is an overseas territory.... But Commonwealth was used so many times, including in the thumbnail conflating the two terms, that I had to point it out.
