Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez discusses the Puerto Rico Status Act. If passed, the bill would call for a binding vote where Puerto Ricans would choose between independence, free association or statehood.

The update to what we discuss here is that a bill to change PR’s status passed the House but was not brought up for a vote in the Senate.

@@xrpuertorican4472 become a state or don’t become a state, neither of those choices are what will fix PR problems. My view as a outsider who has only visited and loves PR would be to become your own country but my fear is the current.gov is already to corrupt to make that a successful path. Regardless of what the people of PR choose I hope the best future for PR.

Independence would probably lower property values and make it easier for Puerto Ricans to buy homes/land there. It might make the business environment less favorable as well, which again would lower property values. Outside influences from Cuba, and other strong man states in the area would increase. Puerto Ricans will be more responsible for their own success or failure. Certain constitutional protections might not carry over to a new PR constitution. It all an experiment. Lastly when you go to the PR you do not feel like you’re in the US at all.

I am a Puerto Rican-American from NY and do not support AOC or her political goals. It is difficult to believe that even Puerto Ricans born within the 50 states are treated as second class citizens, but it is true. It is worse for some Puerto Ricans who are Veterans of the Armed Forces and still cannot land a job once they separate from the service. Discrimination is real people! NYC Civil Service Agencies discriminate against people of color and label them as unfit for specific job titles, which is disheartening.

We have issues of our own, if statehood though you will be in that same boat, for better and for worse. If statehood we will help you with your problems but you also have to help with ours. @@Visitor189 Don't agree, we're in a rough patch but we always bounce back. Things were worse during the Great Depression and WW2 but we came out of it (Puerto Ricans too) with more power/wealth than ever before. It actually seems to be mostly Americans who are holding Statehood back and mostly Republicans because they think Puerto Rico would be blue, to be honest I think it would be Purple or maybe eventually even Red, that's how lots of Latin American areas are moving towards actually. If the Republicans could be convinced that this state may actually vote for them I think they'd lose all their objections and be ok with it. For Puerto Ricans they would get access to the same treatment for disasters that places like Texas and Florida get. Is it perfect? No, but Europe doesn't really have to deal with Hurricanes do they? At least I never hear about that, and their tornadoes are small compared to ours and only in Germany, my point is most 1st world nations do not have as many natural disasters as the US has, yet we actually deal with it pretty well, better than most nations at least, obviously there could always be improvement. But either way, Puerto Rico would legally get the same treatment from FEMA and other organizations in emergencies and this helps Puerto Rico especially because it is often on the same path as the disasters that hit Texas and Florida often. I hope both sides realize the advantages of Statehood and we all unite as Americans, I hope Micronesians consider it too, maybe Samoans too if they want. US has changed a lot over the decades and is far more respectful and back/forth with the cultural exchange in its overseas territories than it was decades ago and especially a century ago. I think all of these areas would benefit off of statehood and so would the US in the long term. I do agree with Puerto Ricans' points about Real Estate, we actually have similar problems like that in some areas in the US, we need fairer real estate regulations and more buildings built in empty areas, that's the case everywhere in the US I think though, maybe its worse in Puerto Rico Idk, but either way I think these are problems that can be solved, I mean all of our ancestors have dealt with much harder problems before.

@B. Ballooon I don’t care for statehood for Puerto Rico. There are over 190 countries Puerto Rico can trade from and conduct business. There is still rising poverty, inequality and crisis led across the United States and Its definitely not getting any better. I don’t know why you want to add Micronesia into the states since they seem content with how their countries are set up. Not sure about Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. Plus, there are states that are subject to absolute poverty and you don’t see congress helping them out.

*I am totally for Puerto Rico as the 51st State.* That said, if PR was a colony it would be that of Spain. To the US, the island is a territory. Calling it a colony is inflammatory and makes Depression Era and Boomer aged Congressfolk dig in their heels even more. Independence? It's a romantic notion that results in a right- or left-wing regime taking over in short order with invitations to Russia or China, respectively. And no one is going to vote for a PR descendant US Presidential candidate once PR is independent. The US should invite all five territories into Statehood. It doesn't ruin our system. It will actually prove that the US Constitution and Bill of Rights works even with differences in language and perceived differences in culture. I kinda hate that RU-vid recommended me this channel. It's stressing me out. LOL

Statehood is going to be the majority. No body would go back, like in the early 19 hundreds where a great amount of the population lived in shacks. Free Association is not the same as free associated state, the first is a complete independent country, in a compact with the US, the second is a non incorporated territory, better said a colony.

I also have family living in PR. Makes me think will PR be better off on independents instead of State hood? PR could do so much on selling food products alone. Fruits, Vegetables ETC.. For those who are afraid of worsening conditions in PR if the island becomes an independent, sovereign nation, just try to have a "look from the outside" approach. Frankly things can't be worse than it is now, as a US Territory. We are still bankrupt, financially and as a society. We are getting closer and closer every day to what we define as a failed state. Young people have no opportunities. Everywhere you go, everything looks run-down, businesses closed, infrastructure crumbling. There is no optimism for the future. Prices are sky high, mainly due to the Jones Act. Many politicians elected are a bunch of useless puppets to corruption, and they reflect the character of the people that elect them (it happens here in the US too). But worst of all is seeing we have no valid representation in Congress to watch for our interests. Puerto RIco is exactly as the US government wants it to be; poor, fully-dependent and with an ambiguous political status. There is but two or three districts (AOC's being one of them) in the entire US, where their constituents seem to support that their representative in Congress spend time and effort to vouch for Puerto Rico's interests, in terms of equal treatment. The rest are naturally "out of sight-out of mind", or would never OK that their Congresspeople spend their constituents' time fighting for Puerto Rico's due. I probably wouldn't allow it either if I was a resident of those states! We are the property of a country that has never considered Puerto Rico worthy of becoming part of them. Remember, we are not PART of the US, we are a PROPERTY. I don't even consider the term 'colony' appropriate or applicable anymore. We used to be a colony back when there was "Latifundio Monocultivo y Ausentismo". But colonialism has morphed into someting more obscure, much worse. Empires appreciated and supported and invested in their colonies. There was a mutual gain, and many times, pathway for sovereignty. For Puerto Rico now is nothing but loss. There is no benefit in being a territory, when there is so much more loss than gain. Things could be much better if we were not a territory. It is, and has been US policy, to maintain PR as a territory for many reasons; military/geo-strategic, risky medical and agricultural testing grounds that could never be done in the mainland, and many more reasons. But the biggest one is that Puerto Rico is a hot potato issue for Congress People. Almost no one in Congress wants to confront the reality of Puerto Rico while holding a seat in government. It is too much of a risky and touchy subject, re-election-wise. And the people who are suffering are not worthy of their time, effort or risk.There's this belief, by both sides of government that the balance of government will tip, affecting one party, more than the other. So let's be brave and consider independence for Puerto Rico. We have NOTHING to lose. Not anymore. No more Jones Act. We will be able to make our own decisions, do trade and commerce directly with other countries (which will bring more money than what we "get" from the US), especially those countries that see us a equal, not as inferior. We will create financial hubs, improve our tourism industry, restore our industrial facilities back to the glory days where college graduates had a great job waiting for them. We will mature as a country and end this destructive dependence on US money. A big part of the diaspora, myself included, will have a way to return and enjoy living there. All those things... We've hit rock bottom. It cannot get worse than people not having hope. We are slowly dying. Like a human colony on Mars or outer space. Only a change in status can bring that hope, and a roadmap to reconstruction back. Thank you MS Graulau for this very important video, and the effort you put forth for this forum for us to learn and share our thoughts and opinions. Eagerly waiting on the next!

I can understand their reasons for not wanting to join the United States, but I can also understand why they would want to. Ultimately, it's up them, and the United States should honor their decision.

This is not to offend anyone who is an AOC follower, but, in hearing her remarks in Congress, I have to admit that I do not trust the woman, or feel she's cranial when often enough, what comes out of her mouth is a word salad. Bianca, YOU are much more intelligent and cranial than AOC. There are questions that are not being answered with this "bill". The whole "bill" is questionable, and although AOC acts as if she has all the answers, she doesn't. This is my first time on here and I ventured into your channel via a short you had on PR. AOC haha. Bianca, your channel is too advanced for that. But jokes aside, take a look at the island nation of Palau. Search online or find books on their country and how they formed their status. That's the best option and route for Puerto Rico now, and given how the world is now. But for the love of God, Puerto Rico must finally implement their own immigration/visitor entry laws and requirements. Puerto Rico is not a state of the USA and it's not a free-for-all. PR deserves respect and dignity, but most of all protection. Also look at Bermuda. They remain a territory of the UK, but they have their own immigration/visitor laws and requirements. UK citizens cannot just hop over to Bermuda and live there. UK citizens have to face the typical 90 days stay upon arrival, with no employment, vice-versa. And their real estate, there are laws to protect born-Bermudans and put them first. As for the passport, Bermuda has the known UK Kingdom passport, but on the cover below the seal, it reads something like "Bermuda". That's why I think of Bermuda whenever Puerto Rico issues come up, because Bermuda is still a territory of UK but is basically a country and its own unique culture. You can't deny it, and same goes for Puerto Rico. Thank you for all you do, Bianca! You are a true ambassador of Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 ❤

For sure a colony and the solution is to vote for independence or statehood. The best solution is independence. Congress is unlikely to approve statehood. The benefits of independence we can be open to the world and trade with them. In the meantime, the Puerto Rican government meaning Puerto Ricans has to be held accountable instead of this gringo bull. Yes, there is history in the past and we can go over and over the injustices of the past or present.
@jonathanmolina3529
@jonathanmolina3529 2 года назад
The main reason people say independence is the best option is because we could trade with the whole world but no one sits and think... trade what? The Dominican Republic can trade with the whole world also and let's compare them to PR. We have nothing to trade with the world. Puerto Rico doesn't manufacture anything. Our current economy is based basically only in federal funds and in the US. Most companies in PR come from the US. If PR becomes independent we lose the federal laws that we have regarding economy like the minimum wage. The new wage will be depending on our economy so it will most likely go down to even $1/hour.

However personally would be in favor of Option 2 -- where PR although still directly connected to the US, can still have total autonomy of themselves, i forgot the term she called it. I know that these will come with their cons but i want for puerto rico more than anything to have more control over themselves and their own economy and use the natural resources they have within the island already for the benefit of their own people instead of being so insanely co dependent and exploited by the US even if the US gives "benefits" ...

US citizenship isn’t something to praise about. All it really means is that we’re subject to paying taxes no matter where you are in the world. It’s the only industrialized nation to tax based on citizenship. The United States isn’t going to improve itself as a country and it would be foolish to vote for statehood due to the fact that it’s a dying empire. With independence, Puerto Ricans have a shot in making something of itself internationally. There are more options for economic development

Very good, Singleton. You have a well developed sense of anticolonialism. Unlike many ignorant colonialized Puerto Ricans who favor the condemned status quo or statehood.

That would be stupid. Without the United States Puerto Rico will become a poverty country like Santo Domingo. The people in Puerto Rico are not all Puerto Ricans. Making it a state so they pay taxes and to stop invaders will keep it safe from poverty. Only the Spanish make the votes. Congress has the decision to make it Statehood. Puerto Rico will never become independent. It is Common Wealth.
@choice828
@choice828 Год назад
The political Dominican or lady Alexandra Cortez from Congress wouldn't be here if not going through our US territory. Puerto Rico is why you invaders go there because it is US territory with the same US currency. That is the difference between Puerto Ricans being Spanish and the Political Dominican not even Hispanic.

If they vote for independence and succeed, that is when the true fight for independence begins. The people of that. Island are not equipped spiritually or materially to fight for independence. They will bow to the dictator that is installed and become another Haiti.

Statehood is very important for Puerto Rico. I was born in Rio Piedras but was raised in NYC. I Cherish my American citizenship and the right to vote. Future generations of PR should be able to enjoy the right to true citizenship. What exactly does independence mean anyway. Independent to do what and who rules? A lot of the Islands politicians are corrupt so what would happen to ordinary PR citizens without the Federal help that we have now? Not wise at all

AOC doesn't know what she's talking about. We need to end the status cuo and only have two alternatives for the future of PR. The commonwealth status is outdated, and we need a new status. Statehood or independent.
