Does This 13th Century Chapel Actually Date Back To The Iron Age? | Time Team | Timeline

Tony Robinson leads the team to the village of Beadnell on a beautiful stretch of the Northumbrian coast to explore an unusual promontory. Legend ties the site to local 7th-century Saint Ebbe, and it's widely believed that a 13th-century chapel stood here. Are the earthworks on the promontory an indication of Viking or even Iron Age inhabitants? The only way to find out is by putting spades into the earth.

I love this episode, always fun to see what odd hat or bright sweater Mick Aston or Phil Harding will wear on site. Love it when Alex Langlan appears, l watched all the shows he did with Ruth & his handsome partner Peter! Baldrick's always funny too. But l really love Phil Harding's sensitivity to his surroundings & just what he is digging up. Telling the lady Reverend the most special spot to respectfully rebury the bones, babies especially, that was so classy & sensitive, very sweet Phil! 👍☺️💖🌈🇨🇦☘️

I think the most likely explanation for the babies is that they were born irregularly or through means that made them unacceptable to be buried in a churchyard. If they were secret babies, for instance, if they passed, they'd need to be buried somewhere quietly and where fewer questions would be asked. It's tragic, but history has many tales to tell that wring our hearts.
@marshhen
@marshhen 2 года назад
Absolutely, the grief of these little skeletons is probably a mix of babies who did not survive but more likely many who were not born in wedlock.
@nicolawebb6025
@nicolawebb6025 2 года назад
The most likely case is that they were stillborn. This would leave them in-baptised and therefore intelligible for burial in consecrated ground. This would be the only 'holy' alternative. It's fairly common before the Reformation

In a strange way I think it is possible that the walls built during the war may help to prevent the ruins of the chapel crumbling into the sea. I hope the community there will somehow corden the area off so that the ruins and the skeletons are not further damaged. It is not an area which is vital for farming or any other industry and is also ecologically sensitive because of its exposure to the elements. Being a woman makes me sad and sensitive to the baby burials. Once again a great dig and great coverage. Thanks guys and gals.

Great choice for a change of location. Your move to another area cuts down on the echo TREMENDOUSLY :) :). You're audience is able to hear you so much better without the distraction of the background echo. Just 1 suggestion though. You might want to think about putting your camera or computer up on a thin book or some other prop device to slightly elevate your camera. You look like you are uncomfortably hunched over a desk.

I really love these episodes, but something that I've noticed is they often pose the women as the "viewer surrogate" in the on camera discussions that are for the benefit of the viewer. (The people involved already know the information being shared.) Usually they have guys as part of the discussion, but they almost always pose women as the ones needing fairly simple (to those involved) aspects of the dig explained to them (as the audience likely does). While Tim is involved discussing things with the experts, the scenes with women are often them having things explained to them by other experts. I don't think this was being done on purpose or with malice AT ALL. We need audience surrogates on shows like this because we don't know what they know. It's just something I've noticed watching these episodes over and over for a year. haha. Again, I love this show and I don't think these things were done with intention. All the people involved are highly skilled individuals but they don't all know each other's specialties as well. I also understand there are varying levels of seniority going on. This is just an observation I've had and perhaps is some optics they can keep in mind for the upcoming reboot.

I had a book printed in the 1800s that was very tiny, I had a folder with reproductions of all the most important documents relative to the U.S. printed on parchment. My mother stole them all. I never understood what she thought gave her the right. This is a personal bias, but people wearing priestly garb INSTANTLY sparks mistrust. They're playing a role at the expense of others.
