Time Team S14-E11 Road to the Relics, Godstone, Surrey

Local metal detectorist David Hunt has been visiting the same field in Godstone in Surrey for the past 15 years, and in that time has discovered a huge collection of Roman finds. Around 600 coins, many of them of high value, have been recovered from the field, as well as a collection of brooches and other, more unusual items, including what looks like a metal sceptre handle.
Local archaeologists believe that the number and value of the finds means that they may have been deliberate offerings, pointing towards a possible Roman temple or religious site. The possible sceptre handle is similar to ones that have been found at another Roman religious site nearby and may have been used by priests.
The site is positioned close to a Roman road connecting London to the south coast and has never been excavated, although English Heritage did commission a geophysics survey. Local archaeologists have been wondering what lies beneath the surface for many years, and called in Time Team to help them find out.
It was a big challenge, in a very big field, and as usual, the Team had just three days to do it in.

Before Time Team Classics emerged on the scene, Reijer Zaaijer was the main source for high quality Time Team videos. And his channel is responsible for helping keep the Time Team family of viewers and fans entertained and educated. He deserves a HUGE round of applause for all his work.

I may have been binging too much on Time Team lately as the voices in my head all sound like Phil now. As an American, I am truly loving this! I wish we had Shows like this to dig up the history that we've taken from those before us.

American archaeologists (or any archaeologists that don't have a tv show) absolutely do not "take" history from anyone or any group. In fact, the goal of archaeologists is to give a face and voice to the cultures that came before us that didn't leave any or very sparse evidence as to who they were and how they lived. Just because we do not have any TV shows detailing our work (sadly TT America had only the one season) here in the States does not mean our work is any less important, substantial, professional then our British compatriots. And to suggest that we are stealing history, culture, or any other sinister motivations you can think of, is ABSOLUTELY moronic.
@ShawnTheSilentLurkerKerr

The computer generated images are so enjoyable and reliable, just knowing that when a good bit of pottery surfaces, I well get to see the entire item grow from that shard in proportion to the person demonstrating its form etc ... seamlessly done, all the way to the final big picture timeline rundown for the site, so fun! Then again, Victor's art is so lively and historically on-point ... I admire his talent for scale, it all fits in the picture naturally, enlivened by the recognizably charming funny and fallible ancestors of that time ... CGI vs Victor!? Oh don't make me pick just one! Its a tie for which style is my most favorite ... :)

But I find all those personal comments about various people (especially their appearance) absolutely disgusting. Some people need to get over themselves and stop thinking that just because it is the internet that makes it ok to act the complete ass. The proper term for these 'brooches' is *FIBULAE* . A fibula is a brooch or pin for fastening garments, typically at the right shoulder. The fibula developed in a variety of shapes, but all were based on the safety-pin principle.

@@cindydintn I think I was sarcastic, but didn’t want to be disrespectful to the show. I love it, and I rewatch episodes daily, but I sometimes I cringe at how it all comes together, or how necessary it is that they find a “high status” building, or something ceremonial. I also wonder if Phil gets the credit for other diggers finds for the sake of the show. Still, I guess no one would watch if they regularly found nothing important.

@johnbull1986
@johnbull1986 5 лет назад
Don't forget that all the archaeologists and geophysisists etc are all professionals and have 'day jobs' as it were. The programes were made over 3 days for that reason. The sites and finds were all properly recorded/written up so they can be reopened at another time. Also most of the sites are privately owned arable/pasture and archaeology is all around you in the UK so it isn't feasible to go around scheduling everything you can get your hands on.

@@johnbull1986 I had chance to see that done in York. The TT opened up a trench on the old hospital grounds some time in the 1990s and said it was an air raid shelter during WW2. When I was there some time around 2005 or 06, they had larger trenches open and doing work; they were quite friendly and said again that it was an air raid shelters site. What else did they find, I wonder. In Britain there seem to be layers and layers of history.

I heard they made it 3 days, because many of the archaeologists have weekday jobs, so they're able to take a day off to have a 3 day weekend project. I wish they had more time, though - like 5 or 7 days at least. Imagine what they could find!
@nhansen197
@nhansen197 4 года назад
I've since learned the reason for the three day dig is yes, they have day jobs. Some of the digs get extended, some get revisited, most don't. A good deal of the digs just aren't worth the extra time, which in a way shows the value of the three day digs. A quick three day survey is typically enough time to determine how much may be found at any given location. It's just that on the sites that had the most to tell it can be very difficult to follow any future discoveries and there is often little continuity between presenters.

Sounds like a non-temple pre-Roman Briton religious site that fell out of use as the population became more Romanized. Dark soil at find depth indicates the possibility of a heavily forested grove.

Not as obsessed with ancestor worship as Francis is. I didn't see a ritual pit. You have an industrial and trade site. Both will need a water source. The bottom of the pit had a thick layer of silt, it takes a long time to build up silt layers suggesting it was a well in use for a very long time. What to do with a well that's no longer viable? Throw your cooking fire remains into it and your scrap bits of bone if you have a BBQ stand close to it. Beats digging a rubbish pit when the old no longer useable well is right there already dug out for you. Major trade fair is a good place to sell some BBQ to the hungry traders and at the end of the day you would clear off the half burnt logs and the remains of the days cooking fire so you have room for the next days. Toss those into the dry well and they would continue burning, fair ends and a layer of just dirt builds up over the remains of the weeks or month long fairs BBQ tent cooking rubbish pit. Next year it begins again because trade fairs always have food vendors. 2 generations of people selling BBQ at the trade fair and using the well could easily create that much fill.
