You absolutely should NOT do this inside especialy around kids, bitds or those with lung issues. Melting plastic gives off toxic fumes that can be deadly.

I didn't see this craft on Tik-Tok but somewhere else - probably Facebook. We tried it this way first because my friend was the one who initiated the craft and she saw it done this way. I had seen it at a much lower temperature - I believe it was 200 or 250 degrees. We left it in for somewhere around four minutes. We really didn't time it- just watched. They turned out much better and had no buckling, folding or bubbling and there was absolutely no plastic smell

I think the way we did it put off way less fume. It was so quick and they dried so fast. It's not something we're going to do on a regular basis, but the smell did not go throughout my entire home. It was only at the initial open of the oven door. Only while we were making them, did it even dawn on me that it was going to smell?. 😂. I'm sure it's not the best thing to breathe. I absolutely agree with that 100%.

Make sure your house is well ventilated, windows open. It might also be best to wear masks during the heating process because melting plastic emits chemicals you don’t want to breath in. Annoying warning aside, these look AH-mazing! You all are very crafty and creative.

We did end up opening windows. It's wasn't overpowering, but I did want fresh air because of my kids. In all, they were fun! Thank you for the compliment ☺️

Really cute! To keep them round, maybe find metal cookie cutters to place around the rim? Honey, don't worry about that oven door! You've got more important things to consider...like having fun with the kidlets! They won't be young for very long. 😊❤ Good on you for playing with them and giving your time to them. ❤ Not wanting to tell anyone what to do, just a friendly heads-up in case someone might not know this. The fumes from nearly all melting plastics are highly toxic and those fumes *will* permanently scar the lungs with too many exposures. Kids, especially, can develop asthma with very few exposures, but so can some adults. A face mask (not the "face diaper"!) with fume filter attachments should probably be worn by anyone in the room. A HEPA-filtered air cleaner going at the same time would also help. These plastics are even more toxic than most high-quality crafting/art resins, which I use frequently, but always with PPE (Personal Protection Equipment).

I tried this craft and could not get the same results. I used 5oz #6 plastic cups and permanent markers as directed in instructions on TikTok. Tried it at 250 degrees, 350 degrees and broil. None of these temps yielded a decent ornament but were instead misshaped, warped and had melted in ugly ways. Did not melt consistently.

I loved shrinky dinks when I was a kid. I don't remember them having an odor. Maybe I should try a different kind of plastic. Either way, it was fun and I'm glad we did it.

Those strong fumes you are smelling are TOXIC!

I am absolutely agree! It wasn't until I smelled it that it even registered with me that it was going to smell. It wasn't horrible.. And it didn't really go past the oven.. But this is not something that we will do on a regular basis for sure.

Thanks so much for sharing this craft. I will definitely have my students decorate the cups to make them into ornaments ❤

Very bad toxic fumes,don't do it?

I agree with this 100%! It didn't even really dawn on me that it was going to have a smell until I smelled it. I was thinking about the shrinky dinks when we were kids.. And I don't recall those having any kind of odor. It's not something that I would do on a regular basis.. But The smell was very, very mild and I think that it would be okay to do if you had your windows and doors open. Maybe more of a spring project so the house could be wide open. Again, that's if we would do it again. Everybody has me a little freaked out about how toxic it may have been.

Did you ever figure out why they come out oval?
@HomesteadingHomegirl
@HomesteadingHomegirl Год назад
I think we should have used a smaller cup. The next size down probably would have been more round. We did not do a second experiment for me to confirm that though.

What kind of cups are they?

They were the member mark cups from Sam's club.

I haven’t tried this yet, but people who have done this recommend Polar brand. Other people who have trouble finding Polar brand say that it will work if the recycling number at the bottom if the cup is 6. Hope that helps.

We used the member mart brand from Sam's club. 12oz. But if I did this again, I would try to find 8oz just to see if they melt more round vs the oval shape we got from the 12oz. Maybe it was a brand issue and not a size issue. Either way.. it was so much fun .

That background noise makes me not want to watch. Pick better music or just don't use any at all.

Everyone likes and dislikes different things. I really am torn up about your negative experience. I hope you can find a more pleasing video about making this craft on another channel.. I personally don't care for Christmas tunes either... But you know.. the video was co-produced with a 9 year old. So.. 🤷🏼‍♀️ tis what it tis.

Your coment was particularly rude, shame on you! This mom was just trying to share a qwick fun craft with her child and was kind enough to share with the world. The music wasn't vulger or in poor taste, it was just fine for this type of video. Besides what were you there for the craft or the music?!? Do better! I personally loved the video and think you did a great job sharing all the details! Simple, to the point, well explained but not overly long. Thank you ❤
