We're behind the wheel of an interesting car, something you might not even know existed. This is a 2014 Ford Focus Electric, Ford's second EV before the launch of the Mustang Mach-E.
This video was made possible with the support of Elmec and their EVduty Smart Home Charger. You can schedule, control access, and even see your estimated charging costs from the EVduty smartphone app. Use public charging stations and grant access to your own all from the app. For more information about the EVduty Smart Home Charger visit: www.elmec.ca/l...
We'd like to thank HGregoire for providing us with this 2014 Ford Focus Titanium Electric for this episode. They let us borrow this vehicle from one of their 32 North American dealerships to use for a week and really get to know the car. With over 3,000 vehicles in stock, chances are HGregoire has the right car for you. Save $200 on your purchase by visiting promo.hgregoir...
As a resident Ford Focus enthusiast, driving the most recent version sold in North America should be on the top of my list. But what about the fully electric version. Did you know Ford made one? Not only was the Ford Focus Electric the precursor to the new Mustang Mach-E as a previous EV in Ford's lineup, but it wasn't even their first as the 1998 Ford Ranger EV came out over 20 years ago. We're looking at something a little more mainstream, and depending on your market it might be the first time you're hearing about it.
Developed near the end of the 2000s, the Ford Focus BEV concept was unveiled to the world using the second generation European Focus platform and design, however by the time production began the third gen, or Mark 3 was ready to ship. Our 2014 example comes with a 107 kW electric motor, FWD, a 1 speed automatic transmission, and a 23 kWh Li-ion battery good for about 122 km or 76 mi new, but about 100 km 7 years later. Our episode and full review goes over how well this Ford Focus Electric has aged over the past half decade and if you should still consider one in 2021.
We discuss the technical specifications of this compact electric hatchback along with the trim and bodystyle available on it's production, along with the original MSRP and options for this vehicle back when it was new. We discuss the features on the Titanium trim including HID headlights, heated front seats, Sync 2 with Navigation and SiriusXM, dual zone automatic climate control, and interior ambient lighting.
We take the 2014 Ford Focus Electric on a real world road test to talk about how this EV performs in 2021 with about 80,000km on the odometer and being about 7 years old. The overall range is key as we discuss how Ford calculates the total available range on this vehicle and what kind of driving will affect it, along with some of the things we've found during our week driving it. We go over the ride and drive of the Mk3 Focus and how it might compare to regular gas versions, along with how it compares to the first generation Focus that we own.
We then discuss some of the things you need to be aware of if you're in the market for a Ford Focus Electric including the common problems, recalls, and issues customers have reported, along with the price to replace the battery pack on this vehicle. From what we can tell it's not possible to retrofit the 33 kWh battery off the newer vehicles from 2017+ on this.

Regarding the battery issue, I am an owner of a 2012 Focus Electric that I bought in the beginning of 2020. Around September of 2020, my high voltage battery died. I took it up to the Ford dealership and they told me the battery pack shorted out and that I would need another one, which they quoted me for over $14,000 for a refurbished one! I had the car towed back to my house, and fixed the pack myself. The issue with the Focus electric is the upper pack (the one directly behind the rear seats) will have cell expansion. Pouch cells naturally expand a bit with age. The problem with that is the expansion knocks the coolant out the coolant lines, causing the "short" from coolant being continually drained inside the battery case. (Actually that "short" is an isolation fault. One leg of the high voltage is potentially making contact with the battery casing.) To fix this, I simply disconnected the 2 BPSMs (Battery Pack Sensing Modules) and BECM (Battery Energy Control Module), removed the wire harness, disconnected and removed the battery modules, removed the heat exchangers/cooling plates between each cell in each battery module, and cleaned the leaked coolant out the case and dried it up. I also removed the heat exchangers, cooling tubes and clips, and the cooling inlet/outlet assembly from the upper pack, as you can't use them anymore. I cut off the inlet and outlet piping of the cooling inlet/outlet assembly and made a coolant bypass so the hoses behind the passenger side rear seat can still flow coolant to the rest of the car. So essentially the bottom pack is still liquid cooled, but the top is no longer liquid cooled. The NMC cells the Focus has (LG P1 or LGX P1) can handle a good amount of heat before the start to overheat. Level 2 charging doesn't heat those cells up one bit, even in Florida heat! I did that rebuild at 60,000 miles, and have put over 16,000 miles on her since then, with no issues. Oh, and I did it all for $30, only spending that on more coolant, hoses, and clamps :). I even made a two little write up so if anyone else has this issue, they can at least go off that: The first one is for the battery rebuild www.myfocuselectric.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=4982 The second one is for removing the high voltage pack from the car: www.myfocuselectric.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=4966

I just bought a 2014 Ford Focus Electric in great condition with only 34k miles, Ingot Silver with leather interior. Had it all checked out & all is well. It's great for me because it's only 24 miles round trip for work. It's not necessary for me to charge it every day. No range anxiety here. I call it the poor man's Tesla. 😂

Hi Steve. I just got a 2016 Focus Electric. My drive to work is 40 miles round trip. I have to drive up hill for 10 miles so it uses 30 miles of range and when I go home it uses 16 miles of range. I already stranded myself going to work. I had to pull over at a business one mile away from my work and slow charge for 1 hour just to get to work lol. I love the car. What is your real world range?
@jghall00
@jghall00 2 года назад
I purchased the 2017 version of this vehicle in February of 2021. It is rated around at 115 miles of range. We've put ~21,000 miles on it over the last year driving around the Houston region. My Expedition now sits parked and the Focus handles 90% of our driving. When I travel to distant suburbs I just fast charge at one of the local EA or EVgo chargers during the outbound or return trip. The fuel savings are covering the payment. It's a great 2nd or 3rd car for local driving.

$20k for the battery is insane. $5k would be reasonable, about the same price as a new engine or transmission.

Basically is, but it's been like that ever since hybrid technology started becoming mainstream. The issue ultimately comes down to the cost of these batteries, eventually they will be cheaper to manufacture along with having more range/life out of them.

I rented a regular gas Focus of that era once and it was great on the tight country roads outside Philadelphia. Handled so much better than my similar era Escape. I wonder if the battery could be rebuilt? Cells or packs replaced? In general there might be a market for that with more and more EV's, PHEVs, Hybrids in service.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 3 года назад
I did ask my dealer about upgrading this 2014's battery pack to the 2017's with more range but it sounds like that wouldn't be possible, at least with the Ford parts. That'll definitely be an area of focus for car makers or third parties, making cost-effective ways to upgrade older EVs like this so they don't end up in the landfill prematurely.
@chrisw443
@chrisw443 2 года назад
The battery is the same tech as the PHEV from the fusion and cmax, so replacing the pack shouldnt be hard if it fails for several years. The real question is, can you upgrade the charger on the car from the 7kw, to the new 11kw level 2 standard. Then you'd have a 90 minute charge time instead of 2.5 hours. In my leaf plus a few fast charges have taken 90 mins, and considering this charges in 2 ish hours, on level 2, is incredibly handy. I have been trying to get that 2017 with the wicked fast charging as a second car, but they are patchy availability here, and technically I can get to cali easy for a car. A hint on a battery replacement, try a third party EV shop, they almost always are cheaper. the battery they would put in yours, would be that 2017 battery.

Great, comprehensive, review as usual. Just wondering how fast would the battery efficiency, thus range, would drop, had this review been done during the bitter winter months, where temperature could drop down to -30C. I could be wrong, since I'm no expert, but I believe that the current technology hasn't yet produced a battery that is designed to function properly during the Canadian winter months.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 3 года назад
Typically with the new EVs I've driven I see a 30% drop in overall range during the winter, with something like this that's older tech with higher mileage I'd expect it to drop even by 50%. It would be interesting to see how this would do in the cold here, I'd have to buy one to really see though as the range is going to be too low for me to pick one up again from a dealer.

You can replace the pack for $2000 and install is simple diy. Why couldn’t you buy another pack so you could switch from one pack to another. I found one for sale.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 2 года назад
I do not recommend doing this at all. First off, I don't know where you're finding a battery pack for $2000. Second of all, these high voltage battery packs can, and will kill you. It's serious business. Dealerships and repair shops are spending a lot of money to build or retrofit their facilities to accommodate the repairs needed on these vehicles, as damaging one can result in a catastrophic failure and potential loss of life. Anyone reading this comment, DO NOT WORK ON A HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY PACK ON YOUR OWN.

Typically you should be able to go about 100k mi before noticing a drop in overall range, and even then it's only supposed to be a few %s. I haven't seen any higher-mileage versions of these yet so it's hard to say, but I do know there are enough owners out there with 100k miles on them already.

I suppose, it's small like other compacts so there isn't a lot of room for passengers, the regular Uber fare might be ok for it. The range is on the lower side compared with newer cars, if you drive in a larger city where people may not be going very far, but frequently, it might be a decent enough choice.

How many miles does the car have right now? When researching some of the older electrics we’ve done it seems the cars loose about 1% battery capacity for every 6,000mi/10,000km, but the overall energy consumption should stay the same more or less. In the left-side cluster screen you should be able to change the information display to show what is using additional battery power, like climate or the radio. I found sometimes my ‘budget’ on range would actually increase by having the A/C on a lower temperature than what I usually use.
