Does this Philadelphia "pizza" really need cheese? We visited Sarcone's Bakery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to see how the regional dish is made and to see if the tomato pie tastes better than a regular cheese pizza.

It's basically just dipping bread in leftover tomato gravy. Ever did that with pasta? Dipped the garlic bread in the gravy? Basically the same thing.

I’m in Montreal and until now I had no idea this wasn’t a common everyday food in both US and Canada until right now. To be clear both are delicious. Both real pizza and tomato pizza are really kinda eaten in different situations though. Like you would order regular pizza for 1 meal and then it’s done. Tomato pizza is usually something you would buy to have for multiple meals (like it sits out on the counter for a few days and anyone who wants a piece for lunch or breakfast can just cut a bit for themselves). Or at least that’s how it is in my house.

I've had this and it's like minmaxing a pizza. Picture good bread with really good sauce and a dusting of parm. Cutting out the cheese and letting the sauce roast on top... it just adds a freshness to it.

In Montreal, Quebec, this is considered cold pizza. The traditional way where I grew up is no cheese on top. Love this stuff. I will be making some for the holiday this year for the buffet table.

soccerman hi I never put gravy on biscuits and I’m from Georgia. We put it on our rice mashed potatoes smothered meat but not biscuits. I don’t mess with sausage gravy

In Canada, we got the same thing only it’s called “ROMA” and they sell it at certain grocery stores. The location, that it’s made from is in Stoney Creek, 40 minutes outside of Toronto. Really good when it’s toasted or even in room temperature! 🍕👍

Not sure why this is presented as something unique. You can find this everywhere in Montreal, including most convenience stores. I have also seen it in a few places in Boston. In Rome pizza stores have something like this (but the dough isn't as dense), but you can find something very similar to this inSicily and even Greece. So I'm sure there is plenty of this kind of pizza or sfincione or focaccia (whatever) all over every major North American city.

@@gibsonflyingv2820 Montreal is in Canada. It is literally in EVERY gas station convenience store, grocery store etc. there. I have also seen it in Toronto and Boston. And of course Roman pizza al taglio has a very popular version with just tomato sauce that is a similar concept but with much better dough.

@@polymatheace You’re wrong, I’ve had Roman pizza in rome and it’s nothing like this. You’ve never even had it; and it certainly isn’t in Boston. This is bread, period. Served at room temp tomato pie tastes nothing like pizza. “In Montreal” okay yeah a city that’s cuisine is a copy of NYC. Anything you saw in there is either a knockoff or something else.

Pizza al taglio doesn't exactly taste like this but this is where it originates from, since fundamentally it's a pan pizza with just tomato sauce (same exact concept). "Anything you saw in there is either a knockoff or something else." That's such a ridiculous statement. Immigrant communities from the same places make the same kind of food. You actually don't know what you're talking about.

I grew up in Montreal, Canada in an Italian neighborhood in the 1970s. The local Italian bakeries had this and had what they called white pizza which is just brushed with oil, garlic, and a mixture of herbs. We just call it tomato pizza (tomato pie????). Although ours has the same tomato topping it has way less of it. Oh and no Italian I know would get caught calling sauce ......gravy.....ever! This is still very popular today and is a great childhood memory. As an adult I now make my own....its great having Italian mothers show you how to make great Italian food. Although it is now sold in grocery stores (please don't buy it there it's commercially made and sucks) Find the bakeries and buy it there...whatever city you are from a bakery NOT, I REPEAT NOT ...grocery stores or convenience stores.... that's just commercially made CRAP. Oh and we make it with pizza dough...not bread dough.

When I was kid, I used to order pizza with no cheese -- just sauce and pepperoni. For some reason, I didn't like cheese. I now eat pizza normally with cheese and all sorts of toppings, but not pizzas with multiple cheeses (only plain mozzarella). With that said, I think I would highly enjoy this. I wish they had this somewhere near me for me to try in Southern California.

If you're in the Hamilton, Ontario area you must try Roma Bakery pizza. It's our tomato pie. It's been around for about 50 years now...the best tomato pie you'll ever try, I promise!

It’s so funny seeing people comment. You have no idea how legendary Sarcones is. They have been around since the beginning and I challenge any bakery in the country to come close to this level of perfection. The tomato pie is absolutely incredible. If you haven’t tried it stop talking and sit down.

ok so this reminds me of 2 things. This makes me think of Pizza SUBs when I was a kid, and then Bread toasted and dipped in sauce. Now people can understand bread and sauce right. (and looking below I think people can see the same thing) Anything that is pizza or flat bread and have toppings is a pizza. For me this is not a Pie... but it helps confuse it with cheese or not. I don't like a lot of cheese,(don't like parmesan, well the standard one) and prefer to flavour the bread part now more than the toppings. Gravy is more complex, and sauces have different type just like pizza, many a curry/sauces are called gravy. Depend where you live.

Im from the Philly area and I haven’t had this in years. I’ve been in CA for over 19 years now. I miss east coast food like this. It’s not anything like pizza to me. It’s tomato pie and it’s cold and delicious.

No there is a dish in sicily that is basically this but with more interesting use of the ingredients, it's a thick pizza but the dough is different and it put emphasis in the consistency of the tomato sauce and things like onion and tomato chunks, it's heaven.

When asked what's better, a pizza or a tomato pie, the owner says "I think this is better, you get the flavour of the tomato, and the real bread dough". To each their own. Cheese is usually the most expensive ingredient for pizza-makers/companies/chains. They tend to skimp. Are 'tomato pies' cheaper than normal pizza?

Tomato pie is history. Personally I prefer the Apizza versions in New Haven CT but this is legit. It's a different thing than pizza as you know it

I have been eating tomato pie for my entire life, and I can tell you -- definitively -- that it is not pizza. It is a completely different and absolutely wonderful product that is -- as they said in the video -- all about the sauce and the dough. And for those who are wondering, the sauce is nothing like the sauce on most pizzas -- it's a very fresh, crushed tomatoes kind of sauce that is much more complex than most pizza sauces, and much more delicious, in my opinion! Also, tomato pie is often eaten after it has cooled down -- "cold", if you will. Now that I think about it, I don't think that I've ever eaten a warm slice of tomato pie in my life, but again, now that I think about it, I think that I'd like to try that sometime! I wish I had some tomato pie right now!

Anyone trying to argue that tomato pie is pizza is from Chicago and trying to rationalize to themselves that their tomato soup bowl is pizza. At least Philly has the balls to admit it isn’t pizza and we don’t sell it as such because we don’t care about gimmicky food to draw in customers. Keep whining about ketchup and not our tomato pie.
