In this video we take a look at UE5's new lighting system, Lumen, to see if it works on the new M1 Max. If it doesn't we will also look at what opens indies have, as well as some thoughts around if Lumen is a feature that most Indies should use.

Great review thanks ! Your opinion is fair, it’s already great that 90% of UE5 is working and it’s enough for most people. But it’s a huge risk to invest 4000$ in a computer that doesn’t allow full features like on windows. In my case I use Unreal for games and cinematic shorts, I loved Lumen right away and I want to keep being able to use this engine fully, while still being on the go and leveraging the laptop’s great config for graphic oriented work (my main job). I’ll keep my window desktop for now and hope that Epic will be fair and make it M1 compatible.

Thanks for the comment. I agree it's a big investment and I struggled to find a laptop that could do everything. If I got a gaming laptop then I would have to give up battery life, have something that needs to be plugged in for full power, and something that gets so hot it can't actually sit on my lap. Plus the typical bloatware. For my use case it was worth it, but for others sticking with what you have or getting a PC may make more sense. I think the key is to know exactly what you're looking for and to get something that can give you most of what you want and need. For anyone who needs those features, cinematic shorts are a great example, I would say hold off and stick with PC. For others creating indie games that don't need it, UE4 so far has been working with no issues so I would recommend that. UE5 has some minor issues but I think it relates more to it being an early release when it's fully release I expect the bugs will be worked out but I don't think nanite will be supported, luman has a chance though. Hopefully this video can help give people the info they need to make the final decision.

@@EnovairStudios Your videos have definitely been helpful since you’ve been asking the real questions about M1 and gamedev ! Few channels went beyond the power trip of doing benchmarks without any real life situations. As for me I’m still pretty conflicted, this laptop suits my needs of being on the move and having enough power for content creation (3D, motion graphics, music production), while enjoying a clean OS. I left the Apple ecosystem for my gamedev needs but I keep ranting about how clunky Windows is. Now that this M1 max is out, I’ve been really thinking about getting one and accept its limitations on my gamedev tooling, I’ll only lose 5% of my overalls tooling but it’s already a lot for such an investment. Anyway just saying about my specific use case. It’s wiser to keep my machine and see how Unreal will do on M1 in the coming year. Again thank you for helping people like me get enough data to make decisions !

Hey, I am happy to help. And I completely agree, I actually want to start creating a series making mini games in unreal to see where the problems really are. For example xcode's intellisense doesn't work, VS Code does work but Jetbrains Rider works best by far. I won't be able to flush out all the issues until I go through the entire process and hope to share every step of the way. I think by waiting even 3 months you will be just fine because what you have works, and by then most of the issues will be known. I really don't want anyone to spend money on this unless it's going to really fit their needs. There is one thing that I still want to test, and that is working on a project 95% on my Mac and then using the PC to get that last 5%. I would just use version control to keep the projects in sync. For people who already have a PC this may be the perfect solution. I need a bit of time to test this workflow and will also need a more powerful PC but will share the results all the way. If you have any thing you would like to see let me know and I'll do my best to get a video out

@@EnovairStudios that's even better!! What you're planning to cover is very useful for us gamedevs out there I'm very thankful! You'll be testing Unreal gamedev workflows on Mac and that's important because we all know it's not an environment for that. Will the new M1 change that? You'll help us find the answer. I wanted to ask about making games and compiling them to see if it works. Covering the whole process of making a game will surely reveal hidden bugs and shortcomings : do all materials work? Maybe some shaders crash. What about Niagara, Sequencer, Control Rig and so on. So it's very useful for us, I'm also regularly checking discussions about M1/UE5 on Unreal forums and there are still lors of debates so what you're doing may give useful insight. The consensus is to use windows, but boy if I can ditch this OS I'll do it the second I know a mac laptop can do the job haha. I'll be closely following. Keep up the great work!!

I hope they will implement Lumen sooner or later for Mac. I am working as an architect and I want to focus more on augmented reality as this is quite a new field which has so much potential for our work. Real time rendering is a big game changer and I think UE5 is one of the best programs out there for that purpose. In fact it is not only great to present our work but I also think it has quite some potential in the whole design process as it gives us a clear insight of how certain spaces will look and feel in a more realistic 3 dimensional way than we had before. I do not think I want to switch back to Windows, so I have to find some alternatives for now...
@EnovairStudios
@EnovairStudios 2 года назад
That is a great usecase, I believe unity can do AR but Unreal's workflow is really amazing and could be worth it to switch. If you make the windows machine your work machine, and have a mac as your personal I think you can get the best of both worlds. For me I don't mind windows, mac, or Linux,

I'm still hoping Lumen eventually works because I had been interested in trying out UE5 not so much to make games but to make experimental 3d videos with high quality lighting. But I'm going to be new to modern 3D applications so I don't have much context yet.

I am currently experimenting with UE5 official release, and it seems like GI is at least somewhat working while Lumen is turned on. It shows bounced indirect lights, and emissive materials are actually working like they should. Can you confirm if it is just a fallback like SSGI or Lumen? I am not really an expert in graphics, so I can't really tell if it's working or not. Regardless, it looks great on my M1 Max right now with UE5 official release.

Hi great video, thanks, would you suggest a top-end M1 max or a pc (intel/amd 16 cores, 64gb ddr4, Nvidia rtx 3090 gpu) instead, for a similar price for game dev but mainly for filmmaking on UE5 for which both, lumens and nanite features can be very important? I am a mac user for long and use a mac mini m1 base model for productivity but is it any good to learn UE5 with lumens and nanite if it can work somehow so I don't need to upgrade at this point? Was considering a top end pc only for UE5 but would prefer sticking to macs but let's see? Cheers :))
@EnovairStudios
@EnovairStudios 2 года назад
For UE5 gamedev I would go for the PC (there are too many work arounds right now) but I wouldn't get a 3090, what you could do is drop down to a 3080, use and Ryzen 5900 or 5950, same ram, and then get a MacBook m1 air for general use. Should cost less than just a loaded m1 max. The thing is you will need a PC eventually to compile for Windows so my suggestion would be the best of both worlds. Also I wouldn't get a gaming laptop as they tend to burn out too quickly and the GPU and CPUs are subject to a lot of thermal throttling
@omhari2608
@omhari2608 2 года назад
@@EnovairStudios This is the best advice we could get on this, honestly, really appreciate it. But if your aim is mainly filmmaking, I think the 3090 might be better instead of a 3080? Happy New Year 2022 :)) Thank you.

It's kind of a shame this; the M1 Max macbook is a friggin beef cake of a machine that can handle game development surprisingly well, but it's not yet optimized to utilize the two biggest selling points of UE5. Hopefully it'll be implemented down the line.

@EnovairStudios
@EnovairStudios 2 года назад
Thanks for leaving a comment. They may fix it in the final version of UE5 but I really don't know. I think most indies aren't targeting pushing next gen consoles to the limits so I don't think it's a loss at all. It's kinda like a new shiney object that gets a lot of attention but in real world use for the typical indie and end user I it may not be practical.

@@EnovairStudios What are the minimum specs for a Lumen powered game anyway? I‘d enjoy working on a UE5 indie game some day. :) Right now I am using Godot to create a simple 2D game for iOS/iPadOS. After evaluating Unity for 2D games, I found Godot much easier to use, while not being perfect. Fun times!
@EnovairStudios
@EnovairStudios 2 года назад
Thanks amazing, I hear great things about Godot. I think you need a GTX 1080 or RTX 2080 with 8gb VRAM and 32 GB RAM plus a 12 core CPU to run the demo. Because UE5 isn't released we don't know what the game requirements will be but I think using the demo as a proxy is a good idea

@@tivtag Indie and freelance dev here. This guy is running on an expensive Mac laptop (not great for now game development) but if you're using a Windows PC with something around a gtx1060 or higher and interested in trying 3D, I'd definitely recommend Unreal 5. It's less about shiny toys and more genuinely making things way easier and faster. Like if you want a highly artistic/open exploration game with lots of clutter... that used to be really difficult because you'd have to build sets of LODs for all your assets... But that's automatic for all static meshes now with Nanite. And if you were to make a horror game with lots of darkness and soft shadows... that's easier with Lumen as you no longer have to wait so long to bake things as long as it's in your graphical budget. If I had to recommend UE5 for anyone, it's definitely 3D indie devs just for those reasons alone. That could have saved me so much time years ago. (Though I'd wait until it's production ready)

@shayneoneill1506
@shayneoneill1506 2 года назад
I suspect proper M1 support is coming, simply because Epic are trying to push hard into the film industry, and in the film industry the Mac is king. That means all the eye candy. The GPU can handle it. Apples been trumpeting about GPU raytracing on Metal for a while now, as well performance around the 3070 range , or at the high end of AMD, on the new Mac Studios and coupled with the ridiculously fast SSD and Memory and a better than competent CPU performance, theres really no reason UE5 cant run with full visual fruit on the Studios, so I strongly suspect its a project thats in development at the epic skull mountain base. But if someones buying , naturally you should buy on what you can do now, not what you can in the future, especially if Epic arent exactly on friendly terms with apple right now (Although to be clear, just because the two companies are in a slap fight in the courts, that doesnt mean they wont cooperate. Companies sue each other all the time, and the big companies rarely see it as personal, although the stakes are admitedly high in this case)
@MiguePizar
@MiguePizar 2 года назад
I hope so, but also there's a lot of interest with the GPU companies that might not like that, also Epic hates apple and viceversa, so I don't know.
